How many sq ft will 1 gal of Behr Premium Wood Stain (semi transparent) cover?

Deck was previously stained but has been stripped.
Asked by: Barry
I used 1.3 cans for the two coats of about 400 square feet. DON'T BUY THIS STAIN - it looks like solid not a semi and stays tacky for weeks.

because it is water based, does it crack or peel?

Asked by: penny
I've used this particular stain/sealer for several years. If you properly prepare the surface before staining (sand to remove all loose previous finishes) it will last many years. I have previously used Thompson's and got less than a year of service. I'm now on 4 years with the Behr stain and it looks as good as the day I installed it. I'll never use Thompson's or any other brand again.

Do i need to use a clear gloss over this stain

Asked by: journeyfan
It is not needed, on my deck. But I used this same stain on a outdoor bench because I wanted more of sheen and water repel.

can this behr product be used on a deck that has another waterproofer stain on it?

Asked by: 1234
I would suggest removing the old waterproofing stain first using either a stain stripper or an orbital sander and a medium grit sandpaper. If you don't, your new stain may not adhere correctly and could begin peeling ahead of the advertised warranty.

It is PAINT, not stain! I used it to stain my new, clean, dry cedar privacy fence. I followed the instructions and applied two light coats with a Wagner sprayer and back brushed if it puddled. However, it does not penetrate the wood at all, it is not semi-transparent, and now I am left with 70 feet of "painted" fence!!! The pictures tell the story. Notice on one of them you can see the Behr "paint" on the left side, and on the right side is a different semi-transparent stain that actually penetrates the wood and shows the wood grain. I will be taking my 4 gallons of "paint" back to HD for a full refund.

This product started peeling and developed black mold within the first 6 months. It is not a stain that absorbs into the wood, but just lays on top and it is rubbery. Do some online research. There are complaints all over about these exact issues, and Behr has known about them for a few years. I have been in contact with Behr and am waiting to see what the will do. From what I have read, and what Behr has told me, you have to strip the product off which involves a lot of labor. So sorry we listened to Home Depot's recommendation of this product. They should not be selling a product that has been know to fail repeatedly.

Four years ago I painted my fence with this product in the "chocolate" color. The paint has held up pretty well on all of the vertical surfaces (fenceboards). However, on the horizontal surfaces, the paint started to peel and come up after about 2 years and has almost entirely failed after 4 years. I would absolutely recommend this paint/stain on any fenceboards, but I would not lay this down on decking. In my opinion, it's not tough enough to handle the abuse that a deck is exposed to (UV light, rain and foot traffic), but seems to do well on fences.

I stained my pine wood fence after hurricane Ike (new clean fence) in 2008 and it still looks good today. No problems, not sure why everyone having bad experiences. I'm actually coming back to match the paint because I have an area I replaced. I did brush mine on (2 thin coats) opposed to a roller, not sure if that matters. The picture below is after 9 years!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Makeover At first I was nervous that we would only be able to replace our deck because of the previous products used. The original product was a textured product that is actually in quite of a bind right now due to poor performance. Anyhow, it was an absolute nightmare to remove. After several trash bags full of the chipping paint, our only option was a pressure wash. That still did not do all of the work so we had to have the whole deck sanded. By now Im sure that you can imagine the time this consumed for about 400 sq ft. Finally it was time to stain the deck and we decided to go with semi transparent because the wood actually had some good life to it. The first coat went on and I was not sure that I was loving the color, after a few hours the second coat was applied and BAM! it looked really nice. I will say that it did require an extra gallon but i kind of expected that. It has only been 2 days now but it is looking nice and cant wait to actually be able to use my deck again. Hopefully it holds up for a few years but as of now i dont have much to go off of other than application. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I had been using the Cedar Naturaltone Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish and then bought this as I thought it might be a little better as it is a little more expensive. I reallllllly wish I looked at the reviews before I did because let me tell you THIS STUFF IS JUNK! Very sticky for weeks after application. Our deck was prepped to a T when I applied this stuff. Now I am left with a yellowish orange paint that is not stain! DO NOT USE! STAY AWAY! I cannot believe that BEHR carries this garbage in a gallon.

Within a year it started peeling off of my deck! It was ok for pieces that were vertical. But any horizontal surface started peeling. I friend also used it with the same results. We both investigated stains before using this. All sources that we looked at including Consumer Reports had this as one of the highest rated stains. Through the 22 years we've had our deck we've used an Ace brand and Olympic. Both of these outperformed the Behr stain.

Applied stain as per Behrs instructions. The stain has a problem curing with staying sticky(see all other reviews with same problem, which Im sure Behr is aware of)) After recommended 72HR cure time. Its been 2 weeks and stain is still sticky, taking on stains from shoes and it gets carried into my house and gets on my wood floors.Behr told me to wash it with warm water and soap and it should solve the problem , guess what it didnt! still sticky.Behrs warranty is a joke as it dont cover labor ,which is 90% of the cost of staining a deck. Absolute complete nightmare. Cant use the deck!!
