I have a deck that was covered with deckover a few years ago. I want to replace some boards and restain with a different color. Can I use the solid stain over the existing deckover if it's cleaned first? Will it look noticeably different on the new boards?

Depending on how long the DeckOver has been on the surface, the new app of solid stain may look a bit different but mainly due to any natural fading that may have occurred over time. Worst case scenario would be to thinly recoat the DeckOver areas with solid stain for a uniform finish. Best wishes for your project!

Answer:
Hello stan,
Thanks for your question. I can only speak for using Behr stains, but yes, our solid color wood stain can be applied over existing oil- and latex-based stains as long as those existing stains are free of peeling and wear. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Will never buy BEHR stain again After spending a couple hundred of dollars on this stain and putting 3 coats of it on my deck it looks horrible. I am so disappointed and now have to spend more money and effort stripping my deck and restaining it. Anything that get on this stain leaves a mark on the stain making it constantly look dirty. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love the results We used this stain to refinish the front stairs on our town home. We had considered the Deck Over product but after reading the reviews, we steered clear of it. I am tremendously happy with the results, combined with the White Behr external flat that the spindles are done in (we have to match what was there before). Everyone who has seen this loves how it has turned out. The crew we had working for us work with nothing but Behr products and I can now see why. April 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really adheres to the wood! I love this stain. It goes on somewhat thick to give great protection, and I can almost feel it seeping into my old wood. I did the balusters a couple of years ago, and they still look freshly painted. This year I did the floor, and given the age of the wood, it really made such a huge difference. July 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best i have ever used If you follow the directions on the can you will be impressed. Excellent coverage very forgiving not watery like regular stains this acts more like paint than stain July 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for cedar fences! We chose the terra cotta color for this paint and I used an airless paint sprayer to do my entire backyard wood fence. One coat coverage and the look is fantastic! Just like I have a new fence. The paint penetrated the wood quickly, dried quickly, and still let the wood grain come through. July 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This 10 year paint lasts 1 year maybe 2 before it needs to be redone on deck floor. This 10 year paint lasts 1 year maybe 2 before it needs to be redone on deck floor. I had this paint professionally applied on a deck that gets average use in the summertime. 4 parties a year.. Memorial day, Labor day and 2 or so cocktail parties a summer. The deck looked good the first year summer (the paint was applied that spring). Over that winter the deck floor paint started chipping and pealing. By the time the second summer started the deck needed to be redone. However I put off redoing the deck that year. Now its the spring of 3rd year and the deck is missing at lease 20% of the over 625sq feet of floor and horizontal railing coverage due to chipping and pealing. Just know if you use this paint you will have to redo your deck every other year. If you want the deck to look good every year you will have to redo the deck every year. May 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Impressive Coverage I used this product on old posts of our deck to match the semi-transparent stain on our newly refinished portion. Easy application and the color was very uniform after the second coat (even on varied quality of previous color underneath). I'm hopefully it will last the advertised 10 years. April 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by NOT EVEN CLOSE TO CEDAR - BRIGHT ORANGE, VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED Worst color ever, turned out bright pumpkin orange. We just built a brand new deck with a roof. My husband wanted to stain the plywood and roof joist before installing. I was not around and had told him I wanted the cedarwood transparent stain for the deck that we used prior and had a nice natural wood tone.. Well since it was plywood he decided to do a solid stain and install it to surprise me.. Well Cedarwood solid turned out to be bright pumpkin orange. It is the ugliest thing in the world. Now my camper deck roof sticks out like a sore thumb. A big Bright Orange roof. I don't know how in the world to fix this. I saw the color sample in the store and it looked much more muted and a lot less orange and more tan in it.. This I am sure now was due to the lighting and the fact it was next to the solid chocolate stain. Beware of solid stain in Cedarwood tones. You might just end up with a big orange mess.
