Customer Questions & Answers

how long will it last before needing to be redone?

Asked by: george
After using this I honestly don't see how this stuff could possibly stay looking new for 10-15 years, like the BEHR representative claims. We pressure washed our deck (with soapy water) before applying this stuff and after 2 1/2 years I just don't believe this can hold up the way stain and sealer can. I'd love to know the actual chemical makeup of this stuff because I'd bet its nothing more than glorified paint with sand grit mixed in.

How long does the coating last before it starts to crack and peel?

All of the reviews I read said this product is a waste of money and that in less than a year the coating started to crack and/or peel off.

Mine is bubbling up after ONE month. Applied exactly as specified. Horrible product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little eavesdropping saved a deck! We had our deck installed about 10 years ago and we were over the moon excited for the extended living space it created outdoors, however, over time it became a eye sore due to our midwest Missouri weather and we found ourselves neglecting this area. Last year we had a pool added and the deck stood out even more as an eye sore, we thought our only option was to tear it down and start over until one day we were at Home Depot and overheard a customer talking to the paint associate about their deck and they suggested Behr Deck Over, we were intrigued, so after eavesdropping on this very detailed conversation we walked out of Home Depot with Deck Over, we did our railings in White and the floor in Padre brown. It is absolutely gorgeous. It went on great, it is so durable, I know without a doubt we have extended the life of our deck for many many years to come and it has turned in to a conversation piece with our neighbors and I know of two neighbors that have now since used Deck Over on their own decks! Rated 1 out of 5 by from RUINED MY DECK I prepped and applied exactly as instructions say approximately 5 weeks ago. I live in Upcountry Maui- the temperatures NEVER exceed recommended application temps, high or low, year-round. It looked great! 4 weeks later it started bubbling up all over the deck. Really nasty. Cracking and chipping can only be what lies ahead. The house is for sale and my big selling point is now a complete eyesore. I will have no choice but to give a buyer a credit to replace the whole deck. I am going to lose $5,000 by using $150. worth of this 'easy to use, miracle product'! Just sick after seeing all the similar complaints on this site and many others on the web. Wow, guess I am not alone. I don't think any other Home Depot product reviews have more 1-star reviews than any other star reviews. Point being- THEY KNOW this is a terrible product that is costing buyers HUGE amounts of money to remedy, yet they KEEP SELLING IT.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your money and your time After sanding deck down to bare wood and following all recommended prep work, applied Deck Over and it looked great initially. Unfortunately, it didn't survive the first winter. In formulating this product, Behr did not consider the natural freeze/thaw cycle of the underlying wood. Began to hear load "bangs" during the night as winter temps fell. Soon realized that this noise was the paint separating from the wood in sheets. By spring, deck looked terrible. Will never use again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terribly Disappointed I had high hopes for this product because of the Behr name and a recommendation by a friend. When I saw how thick it was, I figured it would probably be very durable and last. Unfortunately, it didn't last. I applied it in July 2015 and by September it was starting to peel. I planned to touch up those spots this spring but spring has come and it's worse than ever. We plan to get regular stain and cover those spots, but there will be a huge difference in texture and I guess that the Deckover will continue to peel. I would not use this again and I sure wouldn't recommend it. (And we followed the directions to the letter!) [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your receipt for the warranty claim This product looked great when first applied July 2015 and did the trick preventing splinters from the old deck wood, but after a pretty mild Ontario winter, it's peeling off in random places. It's become brittle and separated from the wood. I contacted Behr and they are providing me with replacements, so I've been trying to get the deck ready to re-do it. Sanding doesn't really get it off, only a scraper or a hose. It's like peeling off sunburned skin. And now my gardens are full of bits of it. Such a huge job, and I guess I'll have to do it again next year. I'm amazed they still sell this product. Save your receipt for the warranty claim.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling in sheets Well I should have listened to the reviews on this one. One winter and this material is peeling up in sheets from my deck. I told myself well maybe they are not prepping it properly. 1) I did every step recommended for the preparation of this deck. 2) Followed the instructions to the letter. 3) went on very nice made me think Yes this is really going to work. 4) started peeling off in sheets after one winter. I would not recommend this product to anyone unless you wish to rework your entire deck and for the money I now have more problem than I did before.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wasted money Cleaned power washed my deck Last May 2015 waited a week before I painted the deck with the first coat of deck over grey. Waited a week and cleaned and placed on my second coat. It is now April 2016 and the paint is chipping off. The deck was only used by me and my dogs . Now I have to redo the deck again. What a waste of time and good hard earned money. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling We have put Deck Over on our deck several times, the old part looks pretty nice, but the new part, we have had to replace it twice because of the peeling. The last time we have used stripping, power washed, plus used a sander, still can't get all of the old off. Ugh. Behr has been giving us suggestion, which we do appreciate, just frustrating that it seems we are doing this every year. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
