Customer Questions & Answers

how long will it last before needing to be redone?

Asked by: george
The key to making this product last is Prep. You must prep the wood properly for this product to last. By prep I mean you must make sure the wood is clean and has absolutley zero residue from past staining or sealing. If you apply this product over old stain or sealer, it will peel. If you prep the wood correctly, it will last a good long time. I have a front entance with steps which looks as good as the day I applied it and it is now working on its 5th year. Use a good stripper and power washer to get it preped and apply with a brush for the first coat. You must also apply two coats as directed and you will be happy with the results.

Would anyone recommend this product on a new deck?

Asked by: jmdad75
Absolutely not. As a contractor I only use this product as a last step before replacing deck. As with all the decking products that I've used over the years. You can cut in half whatever the warranty says on the cans. Any finish only last two years MAX!

How long does the coating last before it starts to crack and peel?

All of the reviews I read said this product is a waste of money and that in less than a year the coating started to crack and/or peel off.
Asked by: Lovelila
Treated mine and my mom's in Sept 2015. Both started peeling in May of 2016. Power washed the deck and let dry for a week. Would never buy again.

1-gal. #SC-152 Red Cedar Wood and Concrete Coating is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 1414.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terribly Disappointed I had high hopes for this product because of the Behr name and a recommendation by a friend. When I saw how thick it was, I figured it would probably be very durable and last. Unfortunately, it didn't last. I applied it in July 2015 and by September it was starting to peel. I planned to touch up those spots this spring but spring has come and it's worse than ever. We plan to get regular stain and cover those spots, but there will be a huge difference in texture and I guess that the Deckover will continue to peel. I would not use this again and I sure wouldn't recommend it. (And we followed the directions to the letter!) [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing I painted my deck (wood) and front porch (cement) 4 years ago and the following year the paint was peeling and had fade spots. I re-prepped using degreaser, etcher, cleaner (all the steps recommended) and once again it's a mess. The paint is peeling, more faded spots. Looks worse than before I painted it. It was an incredible amount of work (twice) and still awful results. Very disappointed. Would never recommend this product to anyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your receipt for the warranty claim This product looked great when first applied July 2015 and did the trick preventing splinters from the old deck wood, but after a pretty mild Ontario winter, it's peeling off in random places. It's become brittle and separated from the wood. I contacted Behr and they are providing me with replacements, so I've been trying to get the deck ready to re-do it. Sanding doesn't really get it off, only a scraper or a hose. It's like peeling off sunburned skin. And now my gardens are full of bits of it. Such a huge job, and I guess I'll have to do it again next year. I'm amazed they still sell this product. Save your receipt for the warranty claim.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling in sheets Well I should have listened to the reviews on this one. One winter and this material is peeling up in sheets from my deck. I told myself well maybe they are not prepping it properly. 1) I did every step recommended for the preparation of this deck. 2) Followed the instructions to the letter. 3) went on very nice made me think Yes this is really going to work. 4) started peeling off in sheets after one winter. I would not recommend this product to anyone unless you wish to rework your entire deck and for the money I now have more problem than I did before.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling We have put Deck Over on our deck several times, the old part looks pretty nice, but the new part, we have had to replace it twice because of the peeling. The last time we have used stripping, power washed, plus used a sander, still can't get all of the old off. Ugh. Behr has been giving us suggestion, which we do appreciate, just frustrating that it seems we are doing this every year. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT USE!!! Two years ago I put this on a 4 year old (at the time) wood deck. I followed directions exactly including the pre-wash. Last year the paint started flaking off in large areas - I carefully dried each area, sanded and repainted. This year I have additional large areas of flaking and several areas where the wood is rotted - very unusual for what is now a 6 year old deck. My other deck which has had only stain for the last 16 years is still in fine condition. I wish I had never used this terrible product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't use this product. We applied this 2 years ago, according to instructions, using the preparation recommended. Last year it was already beginning to flake and peel; this spring it has gotten worse. ARRGGG. We didn't want to have to do this again and now we don't know what to do, it's going to be a whole lot of elbow grease to scrape this stuff off and then what to do next???

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DeckOver peels off I used DeckOver in 2014 on one of my decks. It looked really great and still does. So in fall 2015 I purchased more and did another deck and steps. Well, something has changed. The 2015 coat is peeling all over the place, even though I used the same preparation method for both applications. What happened??? Now I have to sand everything off and I don't know what to use. I want my money back! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
