Hi Ben,
Slate (SC-102) is a very dark gray shade. It's close to black, but not quite. Good luck with your future projects! - Sara

Hello Helihead,
Thanks for your question. Whether doing railings, spindles, or the horizontal deck area, we'd recommend applying two coats of this product. Please also be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes for your project!

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 910 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Expected more We had our condo's deck professionally pressure washed and painted using the Behr coating. The wood was bone dry when applied and it looked great for the first year then started peeling. Now less than 2 years later, it's just falling off wherever people walk. I expected a lot more durability from this product. March 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointment My deck was two years old last fall when I purchased this product. The sales girl assured me this was the correct product for my deck. Purchased the special washing formula, washed and let the deck dry. Applied product following all directions, including applying two coats. Less than a year later it is peeling and looks terrible. So now I am faced with figuring out how to get it off so that I can figure out something else to put on the deck. It looked great for first couple of months but does not stand up to the weather. I have tried contacting Home Depot on this issue but none of their phone numbers or chats address this particular situation. My nearest store is over 60 miles away and that is the one that sold me this poor product. Very disappointed!! Had used Behr paint for my entire house, inside and out, three years ago when the house was built. That product has done well and I have no complaints. But this product is not working me and is causing me more work and expense than I had planned. Disappointed that Home Depot has such lousy customer service contact that you can't connect with anyone on this type of issue. July 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Thought it was just me! I purchased this product when it first came out- thought my prayers had been answered. The concept was EXACTLY what I was looking for for my old deck. I cleaned, prepared, dried the decking and applied two coats of this product. It looked amazing. Then, the following spring, huge chunks of the paint were peeling off- very easily. Now it is a disaster. I LOVE Behr paint, and would not use anything else on my walls inside the house. I chose this product based on the success I had with the brand, but was hugely disappointed in this product. DO NOT USE! May 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Improved My Patio 100% I used this product on my 20+ year old raw concrete patio and it looks brand new. I expected there were going to be coverage issues in that the old concrete would just drink in the paint, but I covered approx 200 s.f. with 2 1/2 gal of paint applying 2 coats. The clean up was just soap and water and as easy as a latex paint. I only have one issue with this paint and that is the fumes. I was outdoors and perfectly safe with a breeze blowing, but man the smell of ammonia was strong, kind of like Baby Hueys diaper pail. You will probably want to use a breathing mask like I should have done. They tell me there is no smell now that it's dry, but I'm going to be smelling ammonia for a while. That aside, I'm very pleased with the product and the finished project. I would recommend this for anybody with a tired old patio surface. The color really adds something. September 16, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use looks great I needed to do something with my very old deck it easy looking terrible. I wanted a product that would last be easy to use but designed for this type of thing. material is thicker than regular paint. I I did not want it to look painted so I only did one coat and rolled it on thin . Love the new look. September 28, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Too early to tell, but so far, so good I've had this applied on my very old, very weathered deck for about 2.5 weeks now in mid-June 2016, and so far, so good. It was applied in less than ideal conditions, in partial direct sun, about 80 degrees and low humidity. It had not rained for about 3 days and my moisture meter had the decking at under 8%. I brushed it on to apply it, on over 200 sq. ft. of decking, and also on some vertical surfaces. It was much easier to apply with a wide brush than with a roller. I also feel like you will be able to spread it more efficiently with a brush, and that more product will be wasted with a roller. It says not to apply if rain is expected within 24 hours. Unfortunately, it did rain about 26 or 28 hours after the second coat was applied. That wasn't in the weather forecast. Let's hope that's enough. The one main criticism I have so far is that the actual color is VERY different from the in-store brochure as well as the online color guide. VERY different. I originally wanted to do my entire deck in Cedar Naturaltone, which clearly is a light brown in the color brochure. You put it on and it's a bright glowing orange color. After I applied one coat of that on everything, I went to Home Depot and then got additional cans in plain Cedar to do the second coat on horizontal surfaces only. Railings and vertical surfaces I left in Cedar Naturaltone for the contrast. Even the Cedar color is quite far off from the color in the brochure, it's also a bit too orange. Now let's see if it stands the test of time. I have relatively cold winters here in the northeast and hot, humid summers. I like the texture very much, the matte finish is grippy. And it makes my several decades old deck look like new, almost like composite decking. July 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Home Depot should pay to replace my deck I prepared my deck meticulously following the instructions. After 6 months, it started peeling. Now after 2 years or so it is an absolute disaster. I can peel off huge strips with my hands. I have uploaded a photo showing how horrible the peeling is. I think there is mold growing under the loose strips that I am peeling off. I can't enjoy my deck anymore it is such an eyesore. I can't believe they are still selling this product. My goal for this summer is to somehow get all of this off my deck or I will have to replace every board. This product is a disgrace and I can't believe I am stuck with this horrible mess. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible. So disappointed, hours of cleaning, hours of painting and it didn't last a whole year. Spring of 2015, I scrubbed my deck to remove all dead wood, splitters, grime and grunge. It's a second floor deck, with no access to the ground, only entry from our bedrooms. Followed Behr's directions to a T. As you can see from the photo, I might as well have used regular paint. Do not bother with this product, it's not worth the time and energy, you will put in, let alone the cost. The only area that it didn't peel in random spots was in the shade, near the house.
