Questions & Answers

How long does the coating last before it starts to crack and peel?

All of the reviews I read said this product is a waste of money and that in less than a year the coating started to crack and/or peel off.
Asked by: Lovelila
12 months by my experience. We were meticulous in following prep instructions and spent more time on prep than on painting. We got from the end of last summer to the beginning of this summer with no problems, and once we hit the 12 month mark, the coating started to chip and peel off. Do not use.

How much preparation does an older deck need? Existing paint is pealing.

How much preparation does an older deck need? Existing paint is pealing.
Asked by: Peggy
I simply pressure washed it and allowed overnight to dry. After 5 years it still looked good with just a tiny bit of peeling. This came off with the pressure washing. I re-painted only to change out the color. I've loved this product! I'm 68 and it was a breeze to do.

1 gal. #SC-154 Chatham Fog Wood and Concrete Coating is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 1629.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Like I never did it I did my two-tiered deck with DeckOver three years ago starting today. I scraped the deck, made repairs, washed the wood, cleaned between the boards. I did the deck in sections and it looked wonderful when I was finished. I wished I had this paint for inside; every crack and imperfection was filled in. I couldn't be more pleased. By the end of the first winter, about a quarter of the paint had peeled up. It continued to peel. Every time I took the blower out to remove leaves or pine needles, huge sheets of DeckOver came up too. Today marks three years since I started painting, and my deck looks worse than it did before I did anything. This was a total waste of time and money. A lot of time and a lot of money. I am beyond disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wasted Time and Money After thoroughly prepping the deck surface (which is very time consuming and labor intensive) and applying the BEHR Deck Over, it is peeling less than a year later. It was applied in June, when the temperature and humidity were all within the proper range, the surface was cleaned as instructed, and the product applied as instructed. Yet, now the deck is peeling in high traffic and even in no traffic areas. This product is tedious to apply, quite costly (about three times more than stain), and is peeling within a year. So, what was supposed to last five years or more, has lasted less than one. When it seems too good to be true...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A LOT of wasted money, time, and effort - Horrible I wish we had never purchased this! We have an old deck and this was recommended as the best product for a cracked, old deck. We spend many weekends scrubbing the deck by hand with the recommended product and then painting the deck. We made sure that the temps and humidity were in the range they said on the bucket. One winter and spring later the only paint that isn't peeling is the uprights on the rails. We had some left over from last year so we scraped and repainted and it is peeling again after only 1 rain! We want our money back.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not durable at all. Just applied Deck Over to our weathered deck. Pressure washed it first, applied as directed (though a $35 gallon of this stuff for just 75sq ft isn't exactly a lot of bang for your buck.) - two coats, did not walk on it for 4 days, no furniture or flowers pots for 5 days. Less than 2 weeks later, I have chipping on the edge of the steps and near the top of the stairs. There are also gouges where we moved our patio table over a few inches. It is a thick product that doesn't not have a smooth, nice looking finish. I regret using this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money I have always been told that if the product sits on top of the wood it will not last. It will peel and come off. But I thought I would try one more time. Did the proper prep for the surface as always. I have 5 cabins on a lake and a house for winter. I used deckover on all the decks and steps. Gallon after gallon applied and many hours of labor wasted. It is all coming off at a rapid rate. It lasted about a year. Don't waste your money. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sad. Terrible product I pressure washed my deck, let dry for a week (no rain), and applied the product as instructed. 7 months later it's peeling up and i have to replace my deck boards. I'm pretty upset that this product has made my life more difficult and expensive. Unfortunately it looks like I'm not alone. Many other reviews like mine!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not last 8 months I grew-up as a painter working for the family business. I know enough to know that prep is critical. I followed directions for prepping my deck. I applied the first coat with a brush. Waited a week then applied a second coat. Finished the second coat in September of 2016. It is now the end on May 2017, We had a mild winter in Denver, Colorado. Went out to the deck today and noticed that the paint was cracked and peeling. Total waste of the money spent on eight gallons.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from VERY DISAPPOINTED We did two coats last summer on our covered porch at our seasonal cabin. It didn't even hold up a year. For the high price of this product, I expected it to last at least a few seasons.
