Refurbished wood that has been sanded

This question is from 5-gal. #SC-158 Golden Beige Wood and Concrete Coating

I have removed all decking, removed all screws and turned over the wood and sanded the better side. It had few drips of old stain from other side which were sanded 99-100% off . Boards look yellow with a few spots here and there that are questionable for cleaning or just more sanding. Deck will be 5 square. Can you suggest the best prep before installation of your Deck over? The board with all the blue that is down will be removed. Didn't like it once it was down. FYI: We lowered the deck over 2 steps and reused all the wood. Thanks for any help.

Hello armymom,
Great question. Once the surface has been sanded, then we recommend using our All-In-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 over the entire deck. After using our cleaner, we recommend letting the surface completely dry and then applying 2 coats of our DeckOver.
Best wishes,
Kevin

Hello John,
Thanks for your question. Our DeckOver stain is not designed to stand up to the wear expected on garage floors, so we'd recommend against applying it there. You might instead consider our 1-Part Epoxy Floor Paint: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-Gal-PFC-20-Coronado-1-Part-Epoxy-Concrete-and-Garage-Floor-Paint-93001/203936906?keyword=behr+1-part+epoxy+coronado (notice: I gave a link Read More

For prep, we recommend removing any loose or peeled old paint, sanding the frayed edges of that coating smooth, lightly sanding any areas of the coating that are glossy, spot etching any bare concrete, cleaning the whole surface, spot priming any bare concrete with a product like our No. 880 Bonding Primer, and then applying the paint. Please follow all label instructions for best results, and well wishes!

Hello Chip,
Thanks for your question. Yes, it's okay that the deck was recently power washed, and yes, we would recommend prepping the surface with a product like our No. 63 Wood Cleaner which will open up the pores of the wood to promote adhesion. Please be sure to follow all label instructions, and best wishes.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by rotten product I put this product over my 10 year old cedar deck, decking was sound and in good shape just didn’t want to stain anymore. Followed cleaning and prep directions. Followed painting directions. Very time consuming and back breaking. 2 years later, finish still looks good, BUT my cedar decking is rotting to point you can break through, My green treat step stringers “I also painted “ also have rotted to the point the steps are falling off. The product does not breathe and makes the wood hold moisture. I would not recommend using this product. August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by HORRIBLE!!!! Chips started appearing in my deck within a month. The product was applied under the right conditions. One year on the deck looks worse than before. DO NOT BUY!!!! May 26, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Long term quality remains to be seen We prepped the deck just as described and applied the Deckover as suggested. Applied this to a 13x33 deck. Tips: Don't apply this when it is really warm outside or in direct, bright sunlight. It will dry faster than you can get it on the deck. We started on a mild day early in the morning wit no direct sunlight, which were perfect conditions. Finished up nearing 11:00 a.m. and it was getting too warm to work with the product effectively. So, I would say don't try to apply this when it is cold or hot--mild temp is key. It goes on like glue or mud--really thick so that a second person needs to come in immediately behind the first with another brush to thin it out. It does fill in the cracks and small holes. I used 10 gallons. It looked nice when finished. However, I cannot comment on long-term durability, as it has only been on my deck a couple of weeks. I'm really hoping it holds up, as it was not inexpensive and application did take a little time and work. May 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Peeled terribly... with proper prep!! 2014 application in Midwest. Experienced contractor power washed wood deck, dried in sun two days, then applied two coats as directed. 2015 saw peeling in spots, did touch-up with 2 new gallons. NOW spring 2016... LOOKS HORRIBLE!!! Large areas (2' strips!!) peeling everywhere. Deck will have to be stripped and/or replaced! VERY POOR RESULTS. Peeling everywhere. 600 S.F. deck over lake, so stripping is major problem. April 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dissappointed in Galesburg Product was applied as directed 2 years ago looks like it was done 20 years ago! June 18, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by I was not impressed The product went on as advertised and did cover more than I thought. It looked really nice for a week or so. Problem is I ordered in Sage which is lighter color and any dirty foot prints show bad. I thought it would just wash off but after 4 weeks I tried scrubbing the deck off and the foot prints will not come up. I used a good floor cleaner and medium brush but foot prints will not come off. I would not recommend this product for anyone with dogs or children who track dirt. September 10, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding product My deck had not been painted or treated for more than 6 years. Cracks and hail damage. Two coats of this product did exactly what is advertised. Make sure you follow directions and apply as indicated on the label. Wonderful result and very pleased with the outcome. September 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by easy application Covered in one coat, barefoot friendly. Great alternative to replacing deck. November 10, 2015
