Hi Rick, According to Behr, the deck must be completely dry, depending upon weather conditions this may take 24 hours to 48 hours. Mike

Do you need to sand old pAint off deck before putting deck over on?

Asked by: Bf
Hi Bf! Thanks for writing in with your question! If the current paint is peeling, it's important to sand off as much of the loose coating as possible; this will help DeckOver stick to a sound surface and give it a long lasting finish. On the other hand if the paint is in good condition, sanding it off is not necessary. Instead, clean with the deck with something like No. 63 All in One Cleaner (assuming the deck is wood), and recoat once the surface is dry. Hope this helps, and good luck on your project! Best, Jeanette P.

A year ago I purchased a 5 gallon bucket of Bher Deckover to refinish by deck. It looked fantastic last year with the exception that it showed dirt/paw prints quite a bit, but is now peeling in several spots now and looks horrible. It is going to be a nightmare to remove so that I can refinish the deck again. Looking online this is a very common issue with the deckover. I followed the correct prep instructions for the deck prior to applying. This product was considerably more expensive than stain or paint, and I purchased it because it boasted that it would last for 10 years- this is simply not true. I would have expected much better from Home Depot and Bher.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I purchased a 5-gallon bucket of your Behr Premium DeckOver from Home Depot in mid-April of 2016.... I purchased a 5-gallon bucket of your Behr Premium DeckOver from Home Depot in mid-April of 2016. We pressure washed the whole deck and rails, plus used the Behn All-in-One Deck cleaner. We waited 4 weeks like the Home Depot helper told us to before we started to stain and paint the deck. After this last winter the paint is peeling off of almost all the deck railings and surfaces in sheets. It did not stick at all!! I am VERY upset with it not even lasting 6 months and we made sure we read all the instructions and the deck and railings were dry before we started. I purchased Behr because it's a high quality product. Now I'm not sure it is a high quality product, as we will have to redo everything over again!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unsure on this product I used this product two years ago on my deck in Minnesota. It has started to peel in sheets. Everything was done per instructions. I believe that this product can't handle the freeze/thaw cycles.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does Not Last Prepared the deck with the deck cleaner and let it dry. Applied two coats of Deckover to the deck and it looked wonderful. After the winter, only 8 months later, it has peeled off everywhere. It did not adhere to the deck whatsoever. It is an extreme waste of time and money as it does not hold up to a CT winter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I have read a lot of reviews online that say Behr's Deckover is hard to work with because it is thick, drys quickly, etc. If you know how to work with it, you shouldnt have to worry about this. The product is thick, as many reviews state, but as long as you periodically mix the top layer of the product (~10 minute intervals) as well as the bulk container (~30 minute intervals) you wont have this problem. I was working with the five gallon bucket, so if using the gallon size can, these intervals will need shortened. When you start to see an almost crystalline sheen start to show up on the box of the product, just give the whole top layer a good stir with your brush. Simple as that. I have not had any problems with it not sticking, peeling back off previously brushed on layers, or pretty much any other complaint with the product. It covers incredibly well, fills in 1/4'" cracks and holes as advertises, and the color is fantastic. Much better for me than a traditional sealer/stain as our deck is about 15 years old, in addition to the fact the house sat empty for 20 months as a foreclosure...needless to say no one was taking care of the decks. As with other acrylic products, clean up is a breeze; warm water and dawn. To sum up, keep the product mixed up well, and it will be smooth sailing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable Product We had to resurface a deck (720 sq. ft.) but the rails and a large group of steps (close to 250 sq. ft) were weathered. We were planning on using the Behr stain, but use a competing product on the weathered part. Then we found Behr Deckover. I cannot believe how easy it is to use. The representative at Home Depot told us that he was using the same thing on his mother-in-law's deck too. He said that on the spots that are not too cracked that we could use one coat by rolling it on first and follow up right away with a brush. It works beautifully. I was not a big fan of the color, but the rest of the family wanted this color. I am glad they voted against me because the color is not a old brown but a modern brown. Even my 11 yr. old niece stated, I Love the color. It dried really fast, and it was put to the waterproof test by my Mother who spilled part of her milkshake on the first area did, 3 hrs. earlier and it sat there for about 5 minutes and I was able to clean it up with just a paper towel.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from UnhappyDeck We refinished our deck with this exterior finish. The paint started peeling, in large portions within 5 months of its application. To top is off we had a mild winter season and did not even withstand that. Very disappointing product. We will never use it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Covered an old wooden deck w/ just 2 coats - made deck look brand new!! Easy clean up. NOTE- dries "very quickly" if there is any breeze. You will have to buy more than one set of brush/rollers- we attempted cleaning any it is not worth the water you waste. Will use again on another project.
