Customer Questions & Answers

Does this paint contain a primer in it?

Does this paint contain a primer in it?
Asked by: Jack
Hi Jack, Thanks for writing in with your question. DeckOver does not have primer in it, but it does have a strong bonding agent. You do not need to prime before applying this product. If coating wood, we recommend cleaning with the All-in-One Wood Cleaner, (No. 63) to condition and open up the pores of the wood. If coating concrete, we recommend cleaning and etching to prepare the concrete. Have a great day! Regards, Giovanna

Rated 5 out of 5 by from read the labels before you buy one shot, your deck is 144 sq feet, 3 gallons is what you needed. and you must apply 2 coats, each gallon does 50 sq feet with 2 coats, hence 3 gallons for you. you do 144 sq feet with 1 and then give it a bad rating, lol. i just spent all day friday and half of saturday doing my top and bottom decks which are both 20x15 and as of now they look better than they ever have. i bought 3 5 gallon buckets, so yea over 450 dollars but with 2 coats they look great and i will let you know how they hold upto the chlorine. also these decks are at least 15 years old and had lots of splits, as of now they have filled in the cracks better than i had hoped.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling off in sheets after one Vermont winter I don't expect Home Depot to include this review in it's rating system. I see the ratings for this product are high which leads me to believe that other negative reviews were deleted. Last summer we followed the directions on the side of the bucket to the letter. Cleaned, prepped, double coated. The deck looked beautiful through the fall. (Insert long cold Vermont winter here) The snow is has finally cleared and spring is beginning. I walked out onto the deck this morning and much to my surprise and dismay, saw sheets of paint flapping in the spring breeze. It's not just peeling up a little bit or in a few places it's coming up in huge 2 foot long strips. The deck looks horrible! The only positive is that this paint peels off so easily I will be able to scrape it off in a day and repaint with a better quality product. If you are a 'picker" and enjoy picking paint off of wood this is the product for you. If you want a beautiful splinter free deck then stay FAR away from Deckover paint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product...Back breaking work... The product does wonders on a 10+ year old deck. The application is not easy, but worth the end result. Everyone is amazed how it looks before and after. Just applied on 6/22-23. Took 1.5 days two people working to finish. The Barn Red color is really red. The sample (as always) is different than sample. I love red, so not real disappointed. Still need to go over the area with a brush to get into the cracks, but the job is done--that is just refinement.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Talk to me in a year I redid our deck with Deck Over in May of last year (2013). Pressure washed and used Behr Premium All In One wood cleaner to get it thoroughly cleaned. Sanded and used wood filler where needed then sanded some more (I really believe that a job's not worth doing if the prep work isn't done correctly, especially on a larger project like this one). Applied a total of 5 to 6 gallons of this product as I put two coats on. It looked amazing- our fifteen year old deck looked new again and I was impressed with what I thought was a solid, protective finish that would last for years. WRONG! One year later I'm so mad I could scream! The stuff is chipping and peeling in many spots, cracks have reappeared, the flat surfaces are dull and this stuff holds on to dirt like you wouldn't believe. The deck, to put it mildly, looks horrible! If I'd reviewed this garbage last year I would have given it 5 stars and raved about how wonderful it was. Once again, WRONG! So for those that gave it 5 stars, talk to me in a year and see if you'd still give it the same rating. Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy if I had one. Buyer beware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I purchased Beir Deck Over to stain a twenty year old redwood deck. The wood is in okay shape and had to do a little of sanding and wood filler. The Deck Over product is very thick but goes on nicely. It does a great job of filling in the small cracks and any imperfections in the wood. Clean up was easy as well. Just a month into the applying the stain so we will see how it does over time, but I would think with it being so thick and putting on two coats I am very hopeful!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome product easy to apply. really did a good job of filling cracks and filling in splinters.I am impressed. Coverage seems better than 100 sq ft per gallon. tip: watch the temperature...cooler than 80 is better. keep in shade. has tendency to dry skim over

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would never buy again - good luck removing it Baltimore Maryland - Memorial Day weekend 2013: Bought traditional behr deck stain then saw the commercial of people dancing on a deck with deckover so returned the stain and bought the 5 gallon bucket. I had high hopes for the product. I pre-treated/prepped my deck according to the guidelines, removed all existing stain with behr cleaner, stripper, sanded some rough spots, brushed and rinsed clean everywhere. Let dry for a good 2 weeks. The product applied fine, it self leveled for the most part. It looked great after finishing. Year 1 (2014) it still looked good. year 2 (2015) started peeling in small parts on the railing where it was hit with sun all day. year 3 (2016) is a complete disaster. Large sheets are peeling off. chipping paint is everywhere. It blows onto my neighbors property and i'm constantly apologizing and cleaning up the trash paint chips. This product is very poor. what's worse is the work that will be required to strip the remnants. i can't decide whether i will hire someone or spend the 20-30 hrs myself stripping this horrible product, sanding and re-staining with a traditional product. Most likely it wont be behr. i would not recommend this. it is a short term, pricey solution, there are much better options.
