Customer Questions & Answers

Is this a paint or a stain?

Asked by: Ann
Hello Ann, We appreciate your question. It's a solid color, film-forming coating so in that way it's similar to a paint, but we consider it a stain. Best wishes for your project!

5 questions.

1. I will be covering 2 large decks in the color Burgundy. One deck is approx. 10' X 30'. The other is 15' X 30'. How many gallons to obtain 2 coats? 2. The color Burgundy is available at the Williston VT store or the Massena NY store? 3. Front deck is always in the shade under a roof. Rear deck is in full sun. How many years does this product last without being recovered? 4. Can it be recovered without any problems down the road? 5. My porches are currently stained in Burgundy. Never painted. What kind of preparation do I need to do?
Asked by: Skeeter
Hello Skeeter, We appreciate your questions. With DeckOver going over 750 square feet (both of your decks), you would need 10 gallons, and this would include both required coats. We don't have a color called "Burgundy," but a burgundy color you might be interested in would be Bordeaux (SC-106). It's available at any Home Depot since all the stores use the same color system for tinting Behr coatings. We don't have a set longevity for this product, but it should last for years if properly applied. We also cover it under warranty for as long as you're still the owner or tenant from when it was applied. Periodic touchups may be needed to upkeep the finish, though. Since you've got an existing stain on the porches, we'd recommend scuff sanding the surface to remove any gloss (if there is any), and cleaning the whole surface with a concrete cleaner/degreaser (even if the porches are made of wood). Best wishes for your project! -Joshua

Is the non-textured Deck Over finish slippery when wet?

Asked by: joebob
Hello joebob, We appreciate your question. Even our non-textured DeckOver has a slip-resistant finish, but it can be slippery when wet. Well wishes for your project!

Will deck over water proof regular plywood

Asked by: Brian
Hello Brian, Thanks for your question! While it actually is a weatherproofer, this product is not made for use on plywood. This type of wood can expand and contract with changing weather which can harm the integrity of the coating. You might check with Home Depot for another brand's coating that would be suited to your needs. Well wishes for your project!

5 gal. #SC-118 Terra Cotta Wood and Concrete Coating is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pre-prepped deck by full belt sanding first. Behr covered... Pre-prepped deck by full belt sanding first. Behr covered very well. Very thick out of can. Did not thin. Covered 2 coats @ 400 sq. ft. with 1/2 gallon left over from 5 gallon container. Cannot comment on wear or issues after severe weather but will come back on review in the spring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better results than I expected! I'd heard a lot about this product through advertising and I spoke with a couple of contractors who have used it and heard remarkable things about its durability and ease of application, so I decided to give it a try. I used the product to paint and seal a 23-year-old concrete floor in my basement. We thoroughly cleaned and prepared the concrete in advance of the application, making sure that it passed the "tape test" (use a piece of masking tape on the concrete... if it sticks, the floor is clean. If not, keep cleaning...) We waited 24 hours after the first coat, then allowed it to cure for 7 days before subjecting it to any traffic. The floor looks beautiful, the tiny cracks in the concrete were easily filled and have disappeared, and the resulting finish is easy to clean an doesn't. Time will tell about it's durability, but so far it's handled rough traffic with no problem. I have a few other outdoor projects planned for the product later this fall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every bit as good as advertised We used this to cover an 18 year old deck and it did a great job. Application was easy as it was not as thick as I had expected it to be. It rolled on very easy and filled in cracks and nail holes in the boards. It's almost like encasing your wood. So far it's been durable. Sliding chairs across it has not left any marks on it and it's got a non slip finish to it. I'm seriously thinking of using it to paint my pool deck this year. The color is beautiful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't use BEHR on your deck! We have always used Behr on interior projects and love it. We trusted that the deck over would be a great product and give us a well protected deck....WRONG! It has peeled and you can't get it off. We spent hours scraping and have decided to dig the paint out of the screws and flip the boards. If you are trying to decide if you should use this product (or similar products...rustoleum, olympic, etc) DON'T do it!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Paint Deck Product I just finished painting my deck with this product and it looks awesome. Some of my deck boards looked shabby but now they look chic. I used a paint roller to apply this deck paint and went on with ease and quick. If I used a paint brush it would of took 3 times longer than with a roller. My deck looks like new and hopefully it lasts a few years without chipping. I just wished I picked a more reddish color but other than that much satisified.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from hard work to start - fantastic finish this product is a godsend. I have an old cement patio that did not look good. It had been painted before and most of the paint had come off. It was a difficult job getting rid of the old paint, but once that was done, we rolled on the Behr deckover and it is beautiful again. Would recommend this product to everyone.
