I put this on our deck 2 years ago & need to retreat some worn areas. What do I need to do to prepare the surface?

I'm hoping its just soap & water cleanup and I don't have to remove all of the old stuff and then reseal.

Hi there,
Thanks for writing in, and sorry to hear Deckover has began to wear off. If the coating is worn in more than just one area, it's best to remove as much of the loose coating is necessary. Any bare concrete should be etched before recoating, and wood should be cleaned with the No. 63 Cleaner and Conditioner. We painted our deck with Deck Over 2 years ago and the ends are peeling, in spite of very careful preparation. We plan to wire brush the peeling areas and reapply. We would like to change the color and repaint the entire deck with Deck Over. Is that recommend? What prep should we do?

Answer:
Hi Kim,
Thanks for checking in! DeckOver can be applied over previous coatings that are in good condition- meaning they aren't peeling or lifting off. Just clean the surface with a concrete or wood cleaner and allow it to dry, then apply two full coats of DeckOver.
Best of luck with your project!

A boat deck environment can be such that it exposes the coating to wear it's not designed to take, and plywood can expand and contract with changing weather which may harm the coating's integrity. You might want to check with Home Depot for another brand that'd be better for your boat.
Best wishes for your project! Read Less

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.2 out of 5 by 261 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Thinking of using this? Don't! I put this product on bare pressure treated (and aged) lumber. Two years later and it is peeling and flaking off. Now I have to figure out how to remove it so I can use a better product. My deck looks terrible and this product is to blame. Terrible. May 27, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not put this stuff on your deck! I bought this product to make a newer addition match the older part of my deck. It was time consuming and difficult to apply. We used 2 coats as recommended. It covered well and did mask the difference in age of the 2 sections. My first complaint was that it made the surface of the deck (which surrounds a pool) incredibly hot and impossible to walk on without shoes. Now after only 2 years the finish is cracking and peeling. It looks terrible. My once lovely deck is an eyesore! A waste of time and money that destroyed my deck, which was a considerable investment and can not be presently replaced. April 15, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by 2nd pass, bad like the last Don't use this product. It will waste your time and money and will ruin your deck. June 22, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not what I expected I bought two 5 gallon containers of this stuff, as well as the treatment prep solution to clean the deck off with first. I followed directions pretty much to a “T” though 2 coats of it...even doing this in a late Fall weekend when the weather wouldn’t cause issues. Looked great when it went on and was thinking with that strong ammonia odor that this stuff was binding to my wood really well. Was pretty pleased with it for many months. However, after this past winter, I have cracking & peeling just about everywhere including the hand rails that don’t get hardly any touch. Over $400 down the drain if you add up all the supplies this took. VERY disappointed. June 24, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Chipping and peeling off like crazy. Do not buy!! Like the reviews that are good for this product, it looked great when initially applied. I did 2 coats and it looked amazing. Chipping and peeling is occurring all over my deck now (less than 2 years after applying). It looks terrible. What is still on there is impossible to clean. Any dirt that ends up on it is impossible to get off. What a waste of time and money. Stay away!!! May 28, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible Product Too bad you can't give it a '0.' I have a large deck (2 actually). Followed the directions to a "T." Sanding, 2 coats, the whole nine yards. Did this in August. After the first snow in November, the peeling began. Worst deck product on the market. If I had not followed the directions verbatim, I wouldn't be voicing these complaints. However, everything was done down to the last detail. Don't buy this product. You'll be re-finishing your deck immediately. I can't stress this enough. February 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Buyer beware Seemed like a great idea and value a year ago. Was recommended and pushed by the Home Depot staff. Prepped as directed and loved the result. A year ago I would have given it a 5 star rating. That was a year ago. In less than a year the paint is peeling and in some areas the nails and screws have rusted through the paint. Waiting to see how Behr intend to resolve this issue. Time and money spent- should have gone with the more expensive product. Deckover was too new to get a true impression from online reviews. August 23, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Waste of time and money. I was very excited when I first purchased this product. My deck was terrible and after watching the videos and looking at the reviews I decided on this product. It looked so easy in the videos. Well, after taking the time (seemed like forever) to completely sand and prepare my deck, I started to apply the Deck-over. First of all, it was so clumpy and thick it was almost impossible to roll on. I used the recommended roller and everything. Then it used so much just to cover a small surface, i ended up having to buy at least twice what i originally planned. It took way more time, and far more money than I had planned to do this project, and worst of all, less than one year later it is cracking, peeling, and blistering all over. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone that does not wish to have to do all the work over again in another year or two. Also, it is extremely hard to keep clean, the redwood color shows every speck of dust and no broom or hose seems to get it off. Maybe if you used a pressure washer, but I'm sure that would cause the paint to peel and blister faster. P.S. (some people are saying the deck with the deck-over looks worse than before, very disappointed in this product.) June 25, 2014
