Refurbished wood that has been sanded

This question is from 5-gal. #SC-158 Golden Beige Wood and Concrete Coating

I have removed all decking, removed all screws and turned over the wood and sanded the better side. It had few drips of old stain from other side which were sanded 99-100% off . Boards look yellow with a few spots here and there that are questionable for cleaning or just more sanding. Deck will be 5 square. Can you suggest the best prep before installation of your Deck over? The board with all the blue that is down will be removed. Didn't like it once it was down. FYI: We lowered the deck over 2 steps and reused all the wood. Thanks for any help.

Hello armymom,
Great question. Once the surface has been sanded, then we recommend using our All-In-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 over the entire deck. After using our cleaner, we recommend letting the surface completely dry and then applying 2 coats of our DeckOver.
Best wishes,
Kevin

Hello John,
Thanks for your question. Our DeckOver stain is not designed to stand up to the wear expected on garage floors, so we'd recommend against applying it there. You might instead consider our 1-Part Epoxy Floor Paint: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-Gal-PFC-20-Coronado-1-Part-Epoxy-Concrete-and-Garage-Floor-Paint-93001/203936906?keyword=behr+1-part+epoxy+coronado (notice: I gave a link Read More

For prep, we recommend removing any loose or peeled old paint, sanding the frayed edges of that coating smooth, lightly sanding any areas of the coating that are glossy, spot etching any bare concrete, cleaning the whole surface, spot priming any bare concrete with a product like our No. 880 Bonding Primer, and then applying the paint. Please follow all label instructions for best results, and well wishes!

Hello Chip,
Thanks for your question. Yes, it's okay that the deck was recently power washed, and yes, we would recommend prepping the surface with a product like our No. 63 Wood Cleaner which will open up the pores of the wood to promote adhesion. Please be sure to follow all label instructions, and best wishes.

Rated 2.2 out of 5 by 41 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad product do not use Bought deck over to finish 22 year old treated lumber 14'x20' deck Wood was pretreated and cleaned as per instructions on the container and two coats were applied per instructions. After one winter the finish started to peel and crack. There were cracks in the wood (1/16th in width) which were filled with the deck over, however it looks like the finish cracked by the cracks in the wood causing water to get under the finish and causing it to peel off in sheets. Totally disappointed in the product. Wast of time and money. August 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Thinking of using this? Don't! I put this product on bare pressure treated (and aged) lumber. Two years later and it is peeling and flaking off. Now I have to figure out how to remove it so I can use a better product. My deck looks terrible and this product is to blame. Terrible. May 27, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Stay away! Absolutely ruined my almost new deck. Generates heat when in direct sun that "cooks" the wood from the inside. As it warps and the product cracks and allows moisture in. I can not believe that Home Depot still sells this product. Check out the horror stories all over the internet. July 27, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not put this stuff on your deck! I bought this product to make a newer addition match the older part of my deck. It was time consuming and difficult to apply. We used 2 coats as recommended. It covered well and did mask the difference in age of the 2 sections. My first complaint was that it made the surface of the deck (which surrounds a pool) incredibly hot and impossible to walk on without shoes. Now after only 2 years the finish is cracking and peeling. It looks terrible. My once lovely deck is an eyesore! A waste of time and money that destroyed my deck, which was a considerable investment and can not be presently replaced. April 15, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Chipping and peeling off like crazy. Do not buy!! Like the reviews that are good for this product, it looked great when initially applied. I did 2 coats and it looked amazing. Chipping and peeling is occurring all over my deck now (less than 2 years after applying). It looks terrible. What is still on there is impossible to clean. Any dirt that ends up on it is impossible to get off. What a waste of time and money. Stay away!!! May 28, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not what I expected I bought two 5 gallon containers of this stuff, as well as the treatment prep solution to clean the deck off with first. I followed directions pretty much to a “T” though 2 coats of it...even doing this in a late Fall weekend when the weather wouldn’t cause issues. Looked great when it went on and was thinking with that strong ammonia odor that this stuff was binding to my wood really well. Was pretty pleased with it for many months. However, after this past winter, I have cracking & peeling just about everywhere including the hand rails that don’t get hardly any touch. Over $400 down the drain if you add up all the supplies this took. VERY disappointed. June 24, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by 2nd pass, bad like the last Don't use this product. It will waste your time and money and will ruin your deck. June 22, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Buyer beware Seemed like a great idea and value a year ago. Was recommended and pushed by the Home Depot staff. Prepped as directed and loved the result. A year ago I would have given it a 5 star rating. That was a year ago. In less than a year the paint is peeling and in some areas the nails and screws have rusted through the paint. Waiting to see how Behr intend to resolve this issue. Time and money spent- should have gone with the more expensive product. Deckover was too new to get a true impression from online reviews.
