cover painted concrete garage

garage floor has high gloss grey finish. can I just aply product over it or do I need some sort of prep ?
Asked by: John
Hello John, Thanks for your question. Our DeckOver stain is not designed to stand up to the wear expected on garage floors, so we'd recommend against applying it there. You might instead consider our 1-Part Epoxy Floor Paint: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-Gal-PFC-20-Coronado-1-Part-Epoxy-Concrete-and-Garage-Floor-Paint-93001/203936906?keyword=behr+1-part+epoxy+coronado (notice: I gave a link with a color that is very close to the Sable SC-135 hue). For prep, we recommend removing any loose or peeled old paint, sanding the frayed edges of that coating smooth, lightly sanding any areas of the coating that are glossy, spot etching any bare concrete, cleaning the whole surface, spot priming any bare concrete with a product like our No. 880 Bonding Primer, and then applying the paint. Please follow all label instructions for best results, and well wishes! -Joshua

Used this product last year on my deck and at first I was really impressed. So impressed that I recommended it to two of my co-workers. Well all I can say now is that was a huge mistake. My deck looks terrible. The paint has peeled so badly. Even the rails. Both my coworkers have had the same issue. I followed the instructions to the letter when applying. I must say that I am terribly disappointed in this product. For the price you would think this product would be top of the line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our old deck is new again! Our 15-plus year-old deck was weathered even though we tried to take care of it. We were worried it would have to be rebuilt. Then we heard about Behr's DeckOver. The application is super easy to handle even for amateur painters like us. Coverage is complete, especially the cracks and knotholes. The second coat went on like a breeze. It is fast drying and slip resistant. We bought the five gallon can for a 15x30 deck and there was enough left over for touch ups. Clean up was as easy as washing your hands. We are going to enjoy our deck for many more years to come. Thanks Behr for providing DeckOver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY happy! Product worked very well. We sealed a 20 year old deck and it looks fantastic! did notice that it does NOT fill cracks as large as claimed. It did a good job of this with smaller ones but if you have alot of larger ones you might be happier with RESTORE, which is much thicker and would fill better. Application was very easy using standard paint rollers. Cleanup was a breeze. washed right off with water. Plan your application carefully with the weather. Paint guy said rain would just extend the drying time longer, but this comes off SO easily with water I think it would totally ruin the application if you got even a light shower. just my opinion though. We followed the cure and recoat times to the letter and have had no problems with anything. Finish is hard as nails and love the non-skid texture. This is fabulous when it rains! Now we will see how many years it lasts. Compared to having to re-stain every year with regular deck stains, even getting 3-4 years will be a victory. 8-10 as claimed would be heaven!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Super disappointed used this product last summer on our deck. It took 10 gallons and we followed directions exactly as stated.. Well the snow melted this spring and the entire deck is peeling. It's peeling so bad that even a leaf blower will blow the paint off in big chucks. I'm now left to sand and refinish my deck all over again. HUGE WASTED OF MONEY AND TIME!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Should have replaced the decking boards Difficult to apply. Deck does look better than before. The following day after applying, a bird did his business like they always do. Wiped it off with a paper towel, and off came the finish. Now I need to find a way to get rid of the birds. Hate to see what happens when you clean it with a power washer at any setting higher than delicate. Also cotton wood seeds love sticking to the new grainy finish

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Already flaking off! Less than a month and traffic area is already worn away! I live alone.. So no traffic. Use water hose to clean which already got stained spots and is wearing the paint away! A real waste of time and MONEY! Already know by next spring my concrete patio going to look worn and WORSE than if I had let it alone.. Going to be a pain to get this off next spring! Used Behring for almost 15 yrs and pleased til this paint for concrete!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage and appearence. If this last half as long as they say it will I will be very happy person. I used a 1/4 in knap roller. Have to be careful to keep tray out of sun, it will skin over quickly. Coverage was great. It actually puts like a skin over the wood and it will fill small cracks if put on heavy enough. Very pleased with the results . Whole Deck including rails took about a day. Waited about an hour and half before applying the second coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved our old deck Our sun-exposed solid redwood deck was constructed in 1996. We have used several different wood preservatives on it and maintained it annually, but over the years no product has kept it looking nice for very long. In places it is cracked, gray, and very weathered. Admittedly, our deck gets a lot of use. We have typical Idaho weather and it sees plenty of sun with southern exposure and moisture in the form of rain. We shovel snow from it several times each winter when it gets heavy. We also have dogs who live on a farm and track every imaginable substance across it. Last year we decided that our deck looked bad, could not be restored to a point of looking nice, and would have to be replaced. We heard about Behr DeckOver and started researching because it sounded like maybe, possibly, we could get some more time out our tired deck. We followed the directions for cleaning the old wood and let everything dry for a couple of days. I was pretty intimidated when I opened the first can of Behr DeckOver. It's really thick - more like freshly made pudding than paint. The color was right for us so I took the plunge. I started with the handrail and found that I had to move right along. This stuff dries quickly. I got really even coverage with a brush and it doesn't spatter or run if it isn't applied too thickly. BUT, since it dries so quickly, you can't just go back a few feet and fix a miss. You have to wait until it dries because it's tacky in literally a couple of minutes. After the handrail, I used the brush on the wide cracks and holes of the decking as directed on the can. After letting them dry, I applied the first coat to the flat surfaces. After drying, it reminds me of the newer, composite decks without the cost. It looks even and uniform and most of the defects are now covered. One big bonus is the improved traction. The preservatives I've used in the past are pretty slippery when they are applied, but DeckOver dries to an almost sandy (??) surface. It's really nice on bare feet but not slippery at all. We loved the look of our redwood deck when it could be made nice with a new coat of transparent preservative. Eventually we used semi-transparents to cover more of the defects until the defects weren't coverable. We're very pleased we found a product to give our old deck new life. It will have taken us a total of about 8 hours to apply 5 gallons including all the handrails, and we're so pleased to avoid the expense of replacing the deck at this time. We probably would not use this product on bright, new wood because we like natural wood, but it worked perfectly in our situation. It appears that it is durable and doesn't show dog tracks! One more tidbit for folks considering using DeckOver. My brush and my hands washed very easily in plain water. I didn't even try to rinse the roller cover and just threw it away. We generally would not try a product so new on the market, but we're so glad we gave it a shot!
