Refurbished wood that has been sanded

This question is from 5-gal. #SC-158 Golden Beige Wood and Concrete Coating

I have removed all decking, removed all screws and turned over the wood and sanded the better side. It had few drips of old stain from other side which were sanded 99-100% off . Boards look yellow with a few spots here and there that are questionable for cleaning or just more sanding. Deck will be 5 square. Can you suggest the best prep before installation of your Deck over? The board with all the blue that is down will be removed. Didn't like it once it was down. FYI: We lowered the deck over 2 steps and reused all the wood. Thanks for any help.

Hello armymom,
Great question. Once the surface has been sanded, then we recommend using our All-In-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 over the entire deck. After using our cleaner, we recommend letting the surface completely dry and then applying 2 coats of our DeckOver.
Best wishes,
Kevin

Hello John,
Thanks for your question. Our DeckOver stain is not designed to stand up to the wear expected on garage floors, so we'd recommend against applying it there. You might instead consider our 1-Part Epoxy Floor Paint: http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-Gal-PFC-20-Coronado-1-Part-Epoxy-Concrete-and-Garage-Floor-Paint-93001/203936906?keyword=behr+1-part+epoxy+coronado (notice: I gave a link Read More

For prep, we recommend removing any loose or peeled old paint, sanding the frayed edges of that coating smooth, lightly sanding any areas of the coating that are glossy, spot etching any bare concrete, cleaning the whole surface, spot priming any bare concrete with a product like our No. 880 Bonding Primer, and then applying the paint. Please follow all label instructions for best results, and well wishes!

Hello Chip,
Thanks for your question. Yes, it's okay that the deck was recently power washed, and yes, we would recommend prepping the surface with a product like our No. 63 Wood Cleaner which will open up the pores of the wood to promote adhesion. Please be sure to follow all label instructions, and best wishes.

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Behr premium DeckOver We bought 5 - 5gallon containers of this product. We prepped as suggested, painted as suggested and by the end of the season a lot of the paint peeled off! Lots of money and time totally wasted! We are not the only ones that had this problem with this product. This year we are flipping all of the deck boards over (on a 35 ft deck) and restaining. them with a different product. Very disappointed!!! I do not recommend this product at all. Can't even get our money back. Lesson learned. Ps: we were big fans of Behr products. We always use Behr paint, etc. now we are really skeptical. Unfortunately. April 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by The Worst!! Applied last year. Used the exact procedure recommended. Looked great for the year. This year it's peeling like crazy! Power washing for 2 days with nozzle 2 inches from deck on each plank. Still looks dirty and paint is flying off. Now I have more work than last year!! Try something else. July 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding. I have a very large deck, and purchased 20 gallons. I only needed about 3.5 for the first coat. It covered so well, that I probably will not put on another this year. It covered better than what I estimated. I ordered directly from Home Depot and was especially pleased with the free delivery and the product was delivered in 3 work days. It was easy to put down and the quality and color was exactly what I expected. In addition, the was no discoloring when I overlapped. I would highly recommend this product for decks. I put the product down with a roller, and clean up was easy with just a hose. Outstanding product and looks great. July 16, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product, good coverage!!! This is a great product. Cleans up with water which is a plus. I HAD a very weathered looking porch, applied this product and looks like a new porch. Easy to apply "with a roller" and covers great. A little pricey but don't shy away WELL worth it!! It covers great. From what I had before to now looks great . I am truly amazed. I would suggest to anyone doing a job like this use this product. You will not be sorry. Maybe the best situation would be to apply it to new construction then you will be well protected from the start, but as in my situation if your lumber is weathered do not hesitate to use this product you will be amazed!!!!!! Do your self a big favor, get this solid stain. November 11, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Surprising results I had some extensive repair work done on a 20 year old deck. My first thought was I'd have to replace most of the surface, but after investigating this product and it's main competitor, I decided to try to save the deck boards rather than replacing. The coverage was far less than the guidelines on the packaging. I calculated that I would need 25 gallons, but in reality, I needed only about half as much. Fortunately, the guys who did the carpentry work were so impressed they offered to buy the unused 5 gallon buckets for their own use. The results are stunning. We chose a contrasting color for border areas and it really pops! I will be watching how the product handles the winter and next year when traffic patterns start to get used. Hopefully it will stand up and look as good as it does now. I recommend this product, but hold off my final evaluation until I see it in about a year. November 1, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is Tough Stuff This is one tough paint! I put down two coats over a competitors paint I used last year that just didn't stand up to the wear my patio receives. I waited 6 days after applying the second coat to let it cure before putting my furniture back. I know they say to wait 48-72 hours before use, but with the humidity here in Florida I wanted to be sure the paint was thoroughly cured. I covered 300 square feet in two coats with about a 1/2 gallon left over from a 5-gallon pail. It took some time to stir and mix the paint in the 5-gallon pail -- I used a large metal paint stirrer chucked into my 3/8" drill to mix the paint. I applied it using a 9" roller and made no effort to stretch the paint but it does go down heavy. It's thick paint, so I was tempted to not put on a second coat but I'm glad I did. The paint stands up to moving/dragging an aluminum table/chair set over it and shows no wear or scrape marks. The color is a bit darker than the color chart indicated, though not enough to be a problem, and at no point does it look uneven or "stretched" -- it's one solid color all over the patio. It shows no overlap marks anywhere to indicate in what direction it was applied. Application was almost foolproof. This is one super paint and worth every penny I paid for it. I won't use anything else for my patio or pool deck. June 23, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product. I calculated that I would need about 10 gal to refinish my deck due to its size. It only took 5 gal to cover the deck two times as recommended. I plan to keep the other 5 gal just in case I need to do another coat next year. The deck turned out better that It was when I used regular stain. I recommend this product. September 24, 2013
