Customer Questions & Answers

I used this is on my interior original hardwood floors and wanted to know what I should mop with to clean...

Asked by: Bmw9
Hello Bmw9, Thanks for your support of Behr products. For light dirt stains, we recommend using soap and water. If it's more difficult to clean, then there's the option to use a concrete cleaner/degreaser (even for wood surfaces). Be sure to test out the cleaner first to ensure it's working. Well wishes for your project! -Joshua

Does this paint need an undercoat before application

Do I need to first apply an undercoat before applying this paint. Deck has been washed clean of all growth and dirt
Asked by: Keshwan
Hello Keshwan, Thanks for your question. No, DeckOver doesn't need an undercoat to go before it, although it definitely can be applied over existing paints and stains. In addition to removing any damaged or rotten boards (or repairing those, if possible) and filling any cracks greater than 1/4", we would recommend cleaning with a product like our No. 63 Wood Cleaner. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes! -Joshua

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage This product is a complete waste of time and money. Initially I was beyond thrilled with the results, that lasted approximately three weeks. Now my deck looks horrendous and getting this off completely to refinish with a different stain is nearly impossible. Deck over ruined my deck. Don't do it!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Best 6 month deck cover on the market If you want your deck to look terrific for one season then this is the product for you. However, be aware that after one snowy winter your deck will emerge as the laughingstock of the neighborhood as large section will peel right off as you walk across your deck. Be prepared after you apply this product to spend additional time a year later chipping off the loose pieces in order to correct your deck with a proper stain which you wished you used the first go around.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Goop in a can! In a good way and a bad way! The paint was purchased to paint a 17 year old deck the has been professionally maintained in a regular basis. Saw the adds for this product on TV and decided to give it a try. I started by preparing the deck by spraying it wit.h 30 second cleaner and followed up with some brushing and then a light power washing. I let the deck sit for four days in which we had dry weather in the 70's (yes unusual for the Seattle area). The day before I started painting the deck I went to my local Home Depot store (Sodo Seattle) and had Paula the paint manager assist me. She was very helpful and was really complimentary of my choice to use the Behr Deck Over. I estimated my job would require 7 gallons. I purchased a 5 gallon bucket and two one gallon cans. Cedar Natural Tone was selected #SC-533. It the store I liked the color and the sample that dried on the mixing stick seemed great. Paula recommended a pack of good quality brushes, two roller trays, micro fiber rollers of very good quality, two roller handles and two long screw-in stick handled. I started the painting "chore" about 8:00 am, the weather was cool, dry and comfortable mid 50's to start off. As directed I did all of the detail work first edging, cracks and nail holes. Using this paint is like spreading a thick mustard. It is goopy like thick mustard. It takes work to get it down into cracks, along edges and into detail areas. I just gave up trying to finesse a brush along an edge made a mess, had to resort to masking. Once I got the detail work done I broke out the pans and rollers. Myself and my daughter managed to get the first coat down by 1 pm. The rolling of the paint onto the deck for the most part went well. Yes, the sheer thickness of this paint makes for a fair arm workout. As the day went on the temperature claimed into the lower 70's, we were constantly fighting the coagulation of the surface layer of paint in the tray. It would thicken rapidly and clump up on the roller surface. By the end of the first coat the deck looked really good. The only dissatisfaction is that the paint would not flow down between the deck boards. We took the rest of the afternoon off and cleaned the tools off a bit. We came back to the deck about 5 pm for the second layer. It went on with about the same effort as the first. Took about 3 hours. By this time the rollers were completely worn so I just tossed them in the garbage along with the pans. I have been spending the following days just doing touch-up to missed divots and detail areas. I am really pleased with the result especially for a do it yourself job. Looking back at the result I was a little disappointed on how much effort was needed to get this stuff on in mild weather. A conventional brush is very frustrating to use. The instructions say not to thin this stain at all. Rolling was a constant motion back and forth to,the tray as a loaded up roller did not go far. Just keep this expectation in mind. The color was my only other nag. I thought it was a little to yellow of a cedar tone. I should have settled for more of a redwood stain. In summary the finished job looks really good for a DIY job. Is it perfect "no". The dried surface has a mild grit to it which would lead me to believe it will be stable when wet. Because of how this paint/stain went on I will probably do again. The water clean up and result were sufficiently gratifying for me to attempt this project again when needed. Let's see how long this stuff holds up! It is more of a thick coating that sits on top of the surface rather then soaks into to wood fibers like conventional stain does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEHR Permium DeckOver worked as advertised on my Deck I used BEHR CEDAR NATURALTONE WOOD and CONCRETE PAINT on my weather exposed deck. I had to replace about half of the 14 year old boards so I needed a product that would help improve the remaining life of the existing boards and match up with the newly installed ones. BEHR PREMIUM DECKOVER did this nicely. Proper preparation of the wood before application was as just as important with BEHR as any other product on the market to obtain the overall desired success upon completion. My only complaint with the BEHR PREMIUM DECKOVER was the color I chose(did not check color samples beforehand). More of a butterscotch pudding color than a natural cedar tone(house color). Clean up was easy with water. I would definitely use BEHR PERMIUM DECKOVER again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time. Do not waste your time or money. Cleaned and prepared deck exactly as directed. Less then one month later, deck floor began to peel. So disgusted we decided not to do anything until we returned back up North this summer. We returned to a deck that over 1/2 the paint peeled off. I called Behr and the sent me another 5 gallons of paint, 2 gallons of deck cleaner and told me to purchase 7 gallons of paint remover and they would reimburse me. Really don't want to go thru months of work again. Think I will stain it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very unhappy We applied this product last year after properly prepping the wood. We used 2 coats to ensure it went on thickly and well. Now, just a year later it is peeling off badly and is chipping. It went on well and looked beautiful the first year, and we thought we were happy about the product. Now it's coming off in strips.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NO I prepared the deck as instructed. Applied, and it looked fabulous, but only lasted one winter. I do not recommend this product for intense sun and snow areas, 8000ft above sea level. Total waste of time and money, and a NIGHTMARE to remove, because I have to get it all off and just clear cote. Love this brand, but not this product.
