Customer Questions & Answers

Can I use this product on a garage floor and put on a clear epoxy top coat?

I'd like to use the Behr Desert Oasis Concrete Dye kit for coloring my garage floor, but I'd also like to use a heavy duty clear coat protection. Can I use a heavy duty two-part epoxy top coat? I want to make sure both products are compatible with each other.
Asked by: Anonymous
Dear MJ, We would not recommend combining two manufacturers products as they are not formulated or tested in that manner and would likely void the warranty for both companies. In your particular case, it would be best to seal the surface with either our Wet-Look Sealer or Low-Lustre Sealer. Normally, you would not be able to drive on the Concrete Dye. But with the addition of our Sealer, it then protects the finish and gives this ability. One important thought, properly preparing the concrete by etching it before applying the dye is going to be critical for success to your higher density concrete garage floor. The Concrete Dye Kit does include an etcher, but depending upon the square footage of your garage you may need additional product. You can purchase additional etcher from Home Depot under the BEHR Concrete & Masonry Cleaner & Etcher product name. Thank you for the inquiry!

How long does it take for the base color to dry?

Also the base color is not coming up dark brown. Why not? Thx
Asked by: Anonymous
It took our first coat to dry in about 2 hours. It dried fairly quick. The base color turned out to be darker than on our box. We bought Desert Oasis and it dryed MUCH darker than the color it was supposed to be. Both colors finished out to look like Walnut wood flooring color.

Have some dark splotches remaining after concrete cleaner and then HD powerwashing - options?

Had initially looked at the 1 Part Epoxy floor paint with accent chads, for approx 840 SqFt of 9x10' slabs. While looking at color options, noticed the Concrete Dye kits. This Desert Oasis color would work with the house color (per my 'Esthetics Coordinator' (aka 'wife'). One concern is that on a few of the slabs I get 100% cleaning, nice textured and consistently colored surfaces. (1st photo below) However, on sections, (2nd photo below), even after multiple doses of various commercial 'concrete cleaner' products PLUS powerwashing (2300PSI), I still have some dark splotches. 1) what would the splotches do to the finished product if we decided to move fwd with purchasing 3-4 of these kits? (i am guessing 3-4 kits to cover the 840SqFt......does that sound about right? ) 2) if there is concern about the splotches, what recommendations do you have to remove them? 3) Versus the 1 Part Epoxy floor coating product, which would stand up to typical patio usage? Please advise. Thanks, Bill

Hello and thank you for your interest in Behr Premium products. The Concrete Dye product provides a transparent finish that is not intended to mask imperfections on the substrate. Instead, imperfections or dark areas could add character to your decorative finish. Each kit covers up to 250 sq. feet. We are unable to recommend what type of product to remove the "splotches" as this can be caused by a variety of factors. When compared to our Concrete Dye, the 1 Part Epoxy provides a more durable, opaque finish that is similar to the look of traditional paint. When using Behr Premium products, please follow all back label directions to ensure proper surface preparation and application. Best of luck!

Would you recommend using Behr concrete bonding primer before applying base color?

I purchased the Desert Oasis kit and wanted to know if Behr concrete bonding primer can be used before applying the base color and if it will help the base color adhere better.
Asked by: Eliana
Hi Eliana, Thank you for your interest in our Behr Premium Concrete Dye Kit. This product is designed to penetrate the surface of your concrete substrate without the need for a Concrete & Masonry Bonding Primer. The Decorative Concrete Dye will only adhere to bare porous and uncoated concrete. No primer is needed for adhesion, however, please follow all label instructions for proper surface preparation and application instructions. Good luck with your project!

Desert Oasis Concrete Dye Kit is rated 2.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this product! I too have had great dissatisfaction with my Behr Concrete floor stain project. I was extremely careful to follow all the prep. steps and stain. I watched numerous how to videos as well. My first problem came when the colors didn't proved to be true as shown. That was a frustrating disaster I had to work my way out out to come up with a look I could live with. Now that all is done and we are using the space as a home gym/office (not heavy duty wear and tear at all) The stain is chipping off the floor. I see no way to fix anything. We will either have to flat out paint the floor someday or cover it with something. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Behr Concrete Dye We used this product to finish our basement floor (approx 700 sq ft) after multiple cleanings of the concrete including sanding with a professional sander. Immediately after completion, the dye (which is more like a layer of paint) started to chip and has continued to chip at each and every use of the basement gaming area. We continue to make regular repairs despite ongoing chips. The dye never adhered to the concrete. Very disappointed in the product. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Back Patio Stain Worked Great! We have a large patio with very old concrete with lots of stains. We pressure washed, degreased and etched before staining and knew there would be a lot of 'character' when complete. We were a little worried because the colors in the can were really watery and didn't closely match the color card but we followed the directions exactly and love the final result! Also, when I had questions I called the number on the can and they were very pleasant and helpful. My floors turned out just as I had hoped. Beautiful!!!! Everyone that comes in my home comments on the floors. I have and would recommend this product. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not recommend I would not recommend this product. I followed the directions and steps for prep and application exactly. My concrete patio looked amazing when finished. It was so beautiful. An the places that have stayed in tact are still beautiful. However, this product peels up in little spots here and there leaving white spots on the patio. You have to be very careful not to scrape it with a chair, so I put felt feet on all my patio furniture. But still in random spots it will just peels up for no reason - no traffic, no furniture, nothing to make it peel. The smallest spot is just a spec size but the largest is a couple of inches across. This was a very expensive project since I dyed about 900 square feet of patio. I just hope I can somehow repair the areas that have peeled. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from SO DISAPPOINTED! The Behr Concrete Dye is horrible! We followed the instructions exactly and even watched the YouTube video on how to apply. First sweep of our new patio floor resulted in color chipping off!! So angry and upset!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Way Darker than stated I bought the color Desert Oasis to semi match our tile in the kitchen. It came out so much darker than the picture. It almost looks like a walnut wood floor color. We can live with it but It did dye much much darker. No, i didnt over spray the darkest color too much, they only give you a half of a gallon of that and I was very carefull not to mute the pattern. Would I recommend this color, well, yes and no. Yes, Only if you are a free sprit and can loose control over the outcome. We have NOT sealed the floor yet. Cant wait for that shine! Oh, one word of caution... The etcher pattern will show if you do not apply it evenly!!!! I prefer the messed up look, I dont like anything too perferct so It works.
