Can I use this product on a garage floor and put on a clear epoxy top coat?

I'd like to use the Behr Desert Oasis Concrete Dye kit for coloring my garage floor, but I'd also like to use a heavy duty clear coat protection. Can I use a heavy duty two-part epoxy top coat? I want to make sure both products are compatible with each other.

Dear MJ,
We would not recommend combining two manufacturers products as they are not formulated or tested in that manner and would likely void the warranty for both companies. Dear MJ,
We would not recommend combining two manufacturers products as they are not formulated or tested in that manner and would likely void the warranty for both companies. In your particular case, it would be best to seal the surface with either our Wet-Look Sealer or Low-Lustre Sealer. Normally, you would not be able to drive on the Concrete Dye. But with the addition of our Sealer, it then protects the finish and gives this ability. One important thought, properly preparing the concrete by etching it before applying the dye is going to be critical for success to your higher density concrete garage floor. The Concrete Dye Kit does include an etcher, but depending upon the square footage of your garage you may need additional product. You can purchase additional etcher from Home Depot under the BEHR Concrete & Masonry Cleaner & Etcher product name.

Answer:
It took our first coat to dry in about 2 hours. It dried fairly quick. The base color turned out to be darker than on our box. We bought Desert Oasis and it dryed MUCH darker than the color it was supposed to be. Both colors finished out to look like Walnut wood flooring color.

Have some dark splotches remaining after concrete cleaner and then HD powerwashing - options?

This question is from Desert Oasis Concrete Dye Kit

Had initially looked at the 1 Part Epoxy floor paint with accent chads, for approx 840 SqFt of 9x10' slabs.
While looking at color options, noticed the Concrete Dye kits. This Desert Oasis color would work with the house color (per my 'Esthetics Coordinator' (aka 'wife').
One concern is that on a few of the slabs I get 100% cleaning, nice textured and consistently colored surfaces. (1st photo below)
However, on sections, (2nd photo below), even after multiple doses of various commercial 'concrete cleaner' products PLUS powerwashing (2300PSI), I still have some dark splotches.

1) what would the splotches do to the finished product if we decided to move fwd with purchasing 3-4 of these kits? (i am guessing 3-4 kits to cover the 840SqFt......does that sound about right? )
2) if there is concern about the splotches, what recommendations do you have to remove them?
3) Versus the 1 Part Epoxy floor coating product, which would stand up to typical patio usage?

Please advise.
Thanks,
Bill

Instead, imperfections or dark areas could add character to your decorative finish. Each kit covers up to 250 sq. feet. We are unable to recommend what type of product to remove the "splotches" as this can be caused by a variety of factors. When compared to our Concrete Dye, the 1 Part Epoxy provides a more durable, opaque finish that is similar to the look of traditional paint. When using Behr Premium products, please follow all back label directions to ensure proper surface preparation and application. Best of luck! Read Less

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Peels up with blue painters tape Used this on the concrete floors in our project. I followed the instructions. The color turned out nice, although it is more red than the picture on the box. After a month I used some blue painters tape on it while I did some caulking, and when I pulled up the tape, the entire finish came with it. It didn't penetrate the concrete at all. Therefore, I cannot recommend this product. They named it Concrete "Dye", not "Stain". That must be the difference between stain and dye-- stain penetrates, and dye is superficial. And they should sell this without the kit. I don't need 3 sprayers, but I might need a little more dye and sealant to expand the project. January 2, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by I would not recommend I would not recommend this product. I followed the directions and steps for prep and application exactly. My concrete patio looked amazing when finished. It was so beautiful. An the places that have stayed in tact are still beautiful. However, this product peels up in little spots here and there leaving white spots on the patio. You have to be very careful not to scrape it with a chair, so I put felt feet on all my patio furniture. But still in random spots it will just peels up for no reason - no traffic, no furniture, nothing to make it peel. The smallest spot is just a spec size but the largest is a couple of inches across. This was a very expensive project since I dyed about 900 square feet of patio. I just hope I can somehow repair the areas that have peeled. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Way Darker than stated I bought the color Desert Oasis to semi match our tile in the kitchen. It came out so much darker than the picture. It almost looks like a walnut wood floor color. We can live with it but It did dye much much darker. No, i didnt over spray the darkest color too much, they only give you a half of a gallon of that and I was very carefull not to mute the pattern. Would I recommend this color, well, yes and no. Yes, Only if you are a free sprit and can loose control over the outcome. We have NOT sealed the floor yet. Cant wait for that shine! Oh, one word of caution... The etcher pattern will show if you do not apply it evenly!!!! I prefer the messed up look, I dont like anything too perferct so It works. October 30, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by should have read the reviews before buying this product This does not cover 250 sq.ft. I had to go back to HD and get extra gallon of the 2nd coat, since it was too late for first coat (lighter color). I didnt know difference between dye and stain. I thought this was a stain kit, it is dye. I dont know the longevity. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM is the pump. It is cheap. They should have never included this or charge $10 extra and provided a better one. The pump does not "mist" in any for even flow. It does more like circle raindrops. I had to get the extra gallon to over kill the areas that didnt look right. It gets worse when you add the sealer. The sealer bubbles because it is like water mixed with milk and a little thick. Horrible job by Behr to provide such a bad pump. That is such a critical element. I would have spent $30 on a better one if I new earlier the pump was generic. May 17, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by my opinion, not all that....... Do your home work reguarding this product(choose an alternative). This "dye" is applied with a garden sprayer..... the sprayer is not conducive to a fine spray or a thin coat, of which both conditions are required. I met all conditions (cleaning, time, temp etc) and the finish is much darker than advertised, it did make some fantastic pattern effects, none of which was desired. The only unknown at this point is the longevity of the finish. If it lasts I'll live with the "novelty look" for a while. July 31, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Solid Product While we are thrilled with the end result, the process was a bit more difficult than it had to be. We pulled up about 200 sq ft. of laminate flooring in our kitchen for the kit. The chemical etcher did not cover the entire area and left very well defined streaks where it was poured. We bought more from HD and completed the entire floor on the second application (side note - a team of two, alternating 5 gallon buckets of water to rinse out the mop makes the process soooo much faster). The base coat, accent color, and sealant went great. As and FYI, the dye applied much darker than expected. While the end color is nice, we bought the desert oasis color on purpose. Also, the supplied sprayer did not work well (very direct spray - did not disperse the liquid at all). So we bought a basic 1 gallon pump sprayer from HD for $10. We were hesitant about the wet look sealer based on other reviews, however it preformed very well. I believe our thorough surface prep work (clean and etch) allowed the wet look sealer to properly adhere to the concrete. February 28, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very pleased I do agree with the first review. This does come out darker than the photo on the box and brochure. But, in our case, it matches beatifully and I really wanted the darker color to match the brick and surrounding landscaping stones. We stained a 31 x 13 covered patio. The box tells you that the kit covers up to 250 sf. We had 400 sf and I didn't want to buy another kit, so we decided to make it stretch. We did not have enough of the etcher, but we diluted with more water and everything seems to have worked just fine. The one gallon of base coat was just barely enough for our space. There was plenty of accent color, even though it is only a half gallon. And there was plenty of glossy sealer. I would absolutely buy this product again and may just do the driveway in another couple of weekends. Be prepared to make another trip to the hardward store. You don't find out everything you need until you watch the video. A couple of large pieces of cardboard will save you from masking too much. July 5, 2013
