The paint worked well on the wood trim and fiberglass. The steel plates above the doors were sanded to remove lose rust and painted, no additional primer was used . The paint adhered to the steel properly. This was about 2-3 weeks ago and the paint is still there. I can't say if it will still be there in 5, 10 or 20 yrs. Read Less

Should I use a primer to prep the surface?

This question is from 5-gal. #S430-5 Longmeadow Satin Enamel Exterior Paint

This is a paint and primer in one. When, or would I ever need to use a primer before using this?

Most of what I am painting has been painted before. Should I just clean the surface first? What about bare wood, or caulk (paintable) that hasn't been painted?

Thank you!

Answer:
Hello Daniel,
Great question. Our Behr Premium Plus Ultra does have self-priming benefits and doesn’t necessarily require a primer over previously painted surfaces. However, adding a primer will help promote extra adhesion and help with the coverage. We recommend cleaning the surface with a mild detergent and water. My recommendation would be to prime unpainted surfaces.
Best regards,
Kevin

Hi Ronnie!
Thanks for writing in with your question! If the paint has already dried on the surface, it can be removed by lightly sanding with a fine grit, such as 150-180 sandpaper. Alternatively, the affected areas can be wiped with a paint/stain overspray remover. I recommend trying the solution in a small test area before applying it over the whole surface. Hope this helps, and good luck! Best, Read More

There are paint removal products for overspray available, but the key is to remove wet paint as quickly as possible from unwanted surfaces before it has dried and cured which can make paint more difficult to remove or to adequately mask surfaces prior to painting if possible.
Home Depot carries several paint remover products such as this one:

5-gal. #ECC-20-1 Canyon View Satin Enamel Exterior Paint is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 466.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this paint. CR got it right. I went with this after seeing the Consumer Reports review. This is the 10th house I have painted. Used a Graco X9 sprayer and the paint, although wonderfully thick, worked perfectly in the sprayer. With a sprayer, I was able to put on a slightly thicker coat with no run. I was using a couple of SW colors and HD matched them perfectly. I used the Satin Exterior, and it has a richness to the finish and a very nice hand to the finish. When brushing trim, the paint covered very well. A second coat probably wasn't necessary for the brushing, but was done out of habit. I only sprayed one coat over a primed surface. Used the Kilz2 for the primer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I did not like working with this paint I used this product to paint wood that was in good shape and had a good base of paint. I cleaned the area, applied a primer and then I used this paint. The paint did not go on smoothly and uniformly and as a result I had to give the surface 3 to 4 coats so it would look even. I would not recommend this product. I should have listened to a painter who suggested I do not use it based on his experience.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from too thin - dripped too muc This paint was too thin which surprised me. The Home Depot interior with primer for my bedroom came beautifully. I expected the same or better quality for the exterior.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sub-expectation: Half the coverage, double the effort If you want to work twice as hard, this is the exterior paint for you. My garage door refresher brush job turned into a pain in the elbow. Expected a one-coater, required 2+ touchup. Goes on unevenly, does not cover well. Very disappointed, especially given $37 price tag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Behr Exterior Paint & Primer in One I used this paint for exterior trim work. I was very happy with the coverage, ease of the paint going on, no fumes, and the paint was very affordable. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The trim is a medium brown, we are painting the trim white so we applied a stain blocking primer first trying to avoid two coats of this expensive Exterior Satin Enamel. Even though the Behr Premium Plus Ultra has its own primer and stain-blocking claim, it just doesn't perform. So as it stands now we have applied one coat Zinsser Primer and two coats of the Behr Premium Plus. We are waiting to see how it "cures", we may need a third coat. What a waste of time and money on a poor product. Also, it just doesn't "flow/apply" easily with a brush; I'm using Wooster Pro nylon/polyester brush.

Their paint is garbage. Don't go by Consumer Reports they are not always right. Following the directions after 4 weeks I wanted to wipe some dust and dirt from some door and trim and what happened? The paint was coming off on the sponge with no cleaner used just water. I made the mistake of trying this after years of Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. Stick with those two. I have been painting for 40 years now and I would stay clear of this brand. This is here so that someone else doesn't get burnt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best paint out there! I have been painting for years and have used many different paints. Behr paints are by far superior to any other paint I have used. The Behr Premium Plus Ultra Satin exterior in particular I used on our previous house which had badly chalked aluminum siding. After cleaning it well with TSP and pressure washing it, I used two coats of Premium Plus Ultra, and it came out beautiful. It has been 11 years since I painted that house, and when we ride by it now, the paint looks as good as when I painted it. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
