The paint worked well on the wood trim and fiberglass. The steel plates above the doors were sanded to remove lose rust and painted, no additional primer was used . The paint adhered to the steel properly. This was about 2-3 weeks ago and the paint is still there. I can't say if it will still be there in 5, 10 or 20 yrs. Read Less

Should I use a primer to prep the surface?

This question is from 5-gal. #S430-5 Longmeadow Satin Enamel Exterior Paint

This is a paint and primer in one. When, or would I ever need to use a primer before using this?

Most of what I am painting has been painted before. Should I just clean the surface first? What about bare wood, or caulk (paintable) that hasn't been painted?

Thank you!

Answer:
Hello Daniel,
Great question. Our Behr Premium Plus Ultra does have self-priming benefits and doesn’t necessarily require a primer over previously painted surfaces. However, adding a primer will help promote extra adhesion and help with the coverage. We recommend cleaning the surface with a mild detergent and water. My recommendation would be to prime unpainted surfaces.
Best regards,
Kevin

Hi Ronnie!
Thanks for writing in with your question! If the paint has already dried on the surface, it can be removed by lightly sanding with a fine grit, such as 150-180 sandpaper. Alternatively, the affected areas can be wiped with a paint/stain overspray remover. I recommend trying the solution in a small test area before applying it over the whole surface. Hope this helps, and good luck! Best, Read More

There are paint removal products for overspray available, but the key is to remove wet paint as quickly as possible from unwanted surfaces before it has dried and cured which can make paint more difficult to remove or to adequately mask surfaces prior to painting if possible.
Home Depot carries several paint remover products such as this one:

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 445 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Exterior Paint This paint and primer in one covers most surfaces in one coat and dries quickly. I applied this paint using a 3/4" thick nap paint roller after previously preparing surfaces to be painted by removing loose paint and or dirt. I have applied this paint onto old and new plywood siding, aluminum siding, and PVC trim. Only had to use a brush to paint inside the groove of plywood siding and other areas where it is not possible to get into with a paint roller. I used a custom color through a computer color match to match the existing light almond color of my home. I don't like to paint especially to have to paint a surface multiple times with a primer followed by one or more coats of paint. June 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My house looks amazing! Excellent coverage, only one coat needed! When I needed another gallon, it was matched perfectly by the paint staff at the store! July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome Paint! Family member recommended this paint to me, as they have used it before and it had high reviews in Consumer Reports. My deck was in really bad shape - you could see the wood as the old paint had been chipping off for quite a while. I did a light sanding and then applied this paint. I was so surprised - one coat was all that was needed for complete coverage! It has been on for a couple of months now and it is holding up very well. We get lots of birds in our yard and they can make a huge mess. All it takes to clean is a nice spray from the hose and the paint is good as new! May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by just what I was hoping for - I was going for a pleasing shade of sage for my barn/shed and this was perfect. shot it through an airless sprayer, needed 2+/- coats of this paint even though it had primer in it. did 2 sides over bare wood, perhaps used 3 gallons. finishing the other 2 sides with a base coat of Killz to help conserve the remaining 2 or so gallons of paint. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A very good Product and I would use it again! October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good paint and easy to use. We used the paint to paint the wooden trim around the doors on our house. We prepped the wood and painted. Because it's white and has not been painted in many years, we used a second coat. The paint went on easily and covered very well. The paint contains primer so we did not use a separate primer coat. There was no color added to the white paint. Good paint. I have used Behr paint for 30 years. October 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worst mess ever scraped and sanded house, washed with house cleaner, bought 5 gallons of paint, covered well and looked good going on, bubbled up on siding after drying, asked store paint department why, was told sometimes older paint repels the paint, so this year (one yr later) I scraped off all the bubbles, filled gaps with caulk sanded and repainted, again paint is bubbling away from siding. would like an explanation before next summer when it will probably have to be redone a 3rd time September 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by # One in my book! I think this is the best covering paint bar none... One coat and that's all it took... And the service was fast. Steven October 11, 2016
