How can I tone down turquoise painted walls?

I used Behr's Reef Green, which is a soft aqua color for my nursery. When I got home I could see the color as I came in the door - A LOT brighter and turquoise blue than shown. I need to tone it down rather than repaint. Any ideas will be helpful. We are thinking maybe a glaze. Thanks.

Hi,
I am assuming that the room is completely painted and that you are not at the beginning of your project.

Hi,

You could apply Behr Faux Glaze over your paint finish, however I do not think it would give you the result you are looking for- which is an opaque finish that is more muted or lighter in color than Reef Green (not as "bright). Faux Glaze would be an option if you wanted to create a design or pattern on your wall- you could mix Faux Glaze with a lighter color and glaze a design on your Reef Green base color. Applying Glaze is similar but a little trickier than applying paint.
Repainting over the color is the best way to change the color if you have already finished painting the room. If the green is acceptable when you are in the room, however you do not like how the room catches your eye from the hallway, consider repainting to create one accent wall in a softer color on the wall that is visible from the hall. You could tie in that second color with artwork on the Reef Green walls, which will also help to de-emphasize the Reef Green color. Test the color for your accent wall before committing by using a Behr 8 oz. color sample.
If repainting is not an option, you may use wall decor and artwork, rugs, linens and other decorative items to further de-emphasize the wall color.

Hello Baby Too Blue Room and thank you for your question.
First of all congratulations on the new addition!
It sounds like the soft aqua took over the room. Several pieces of white baby furniture will intensify the color even more. I understand that you cannot repaint the room and just adding a glaze would make the color “shinier.”

So I have an idea for you: consider a faux technique like sponging on a darker complementary color on the walls to add some depth to the room as well as soften it. Since it is literally being sponged on (and off), you can control the amount of paint going on the wall and perhaps complete one wall at a time. Also with the sponging, the dry time will be considerably less since there is less paint to dry.
This link will explain the sponging technique: http://www.homedepot.com/hdus/en_US/DTCCOM/HomePage/Know_How/Project_Guides/Docs/Faux-Sponging.pdf
Is there a favorite color in a curtain, mural, piece of art, or baby blanket that could be used? If not, consider a complementary and slightly darker green such as Garden View (Behr 470D-4). It will bring more green and less turquoise into the room and tone down the brightness of the Reef Green.
Best wishes with your project. Read Less
