It depends on the old seat, but I would imagine most seats could be removed with standard tools, e.g. pliers and/or a wrench. Mine I was able to remove with no tools at all.

Hi Nana in Austin,
You will usually need some combination of wrench and screwdriver, depending on what toilet seat your trying to take off and what hardware was used to install it.
Typically, you just have to unscrew the nut from the bolt. It can often help to hold the nut with a wrench or pliers and to turn the bolt head with a screwdriver (if the bolt head allows for it).
However, if you have an Easy Clean & Change seat, you can simply unlock the seat from the bolt heads by twisting the caps. You can install another Easy Clean & Change seat into the same hardware. Making replacing a seat a lot easier.
There are some situations where a really old seat's hardware is damaged, it might require calling a plumber to remove.
Hope that helps!

Truck,
This toilet seat should fit your Sterling bowl as we produce our toilet seats to fit MOST toilet bowls on the market. There are always a few rare exceptions.

Hi BJ,
The Model # 1580SLOW 000 is a standard Elongated size seat. It's designed to fit standard Elongated size bowls which typically measure in the area of 18.5 inches long.
Here are the specific dimensions for this seat:
Assembled Height (in.): 18.6 in
Assembled Width (in.): 14.32 in
Assembled Depth (in.): 1.931 in
Bolt Spread (in.): 5.5 in

Assembled Height (in.): 18.6 in

Assembled Depth (in.): 1.931 in
Bolt Spread (in.): 5.5 in
Based on your dimensions, I don't think this is the appropriate seat for you. It also appears that your measurement might have excluded the hinges dimensions. For help in making sure you accurately measure your seat, there is a measuring guide on HomeDepot.com if you click on the "More Info" tab and open the Instructions/Assembly link.
You should measure from the middle of the bolt holes in the bowl (or toilet seat hinge) to the front of the bowl (or seat ring). That could account for and inch or more difference, which would make your dimension about 16.5 inches which would be in line with standard "Round" size toilet seats.
In that case, the round version of this seat is:
Model # 580SLOW 000
Store SKU # 634037
If your seat is 15.5 inches, including the hinge then you might have a non-standard bowl which would need a non-standard seat.
I hope that helps!

Answer:
Yes but look at the measurements and it should say elongated is 18.5" or 18" from the center of the mounting bolts to the end of the toilet. Round toilets are 16".

Assembled Depth (in.) : 1.931 in
Assembled Height (in.) : 18.6 in
Assembled Width (in.) : 14.32 in

Couldn't install unit. neither one of the two sets of instructions worked. Called for insertion of a round plastic headed bolt into a square pocket on the hinge. Customer service couldn't recommend a fix. Looks like only conventional hardware would work, not the stuff included. If it did work, the seat would be placed 3/4" rearward, exposing a lot of bowl lip. Online vid (Bemis) showed a totally different hinge assembly, with a round pocket that made sense. Advise checking the parts in the box before leaving the store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hinge broke after just a few months of use Like others reported, the hinge broke within months of installation. The installation was very easy; quick and effective. The hardware provided including the break-away bolts to prevent overtightening worked as advertised. But after only a few months the hinge broke so now I have to replace the seat. Very disappointing.

Easy install as with any toilet seat however after approx. 2 months of use the seat is now turning blue only where our skin makes contact with the seat. It cannot be scrubbed off and it is very strange and continues to get darker. I will take it in and see if anyone knows what causes this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stains easily This seat stains easily---as said on the instructions. Don't use regular cleansers on this or you will have weird stains that are embarrassing. I have to buy a new seat and this seat is only a few months old! Guess they know what they are talking about.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow close feature worth it Overall we are happy with the Bemis slow close seats (we have two). They have been is use for at least a year and still look and function like new. Slow close feature is great. Never slam a seat/lid any more. Installation was fairly easy is a little more complex than average - the bolts fasten to the bowl and then the seat is fastened to the top of the bolts. Only problem is that the seats want to move a bit from side to side. Not enough to be a stability worry but enough that it is noticeable when you look at the closed seat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install and gets the job done I picked this up when the cheap plastic seat that was installed by my landlord broke. This seat installs very solidly, and isn't at all wobbly like my previous one was. Installation is a snap. The lid will bend when you sit on it, but it seems flexible enough that I'm not too worried about it breaking. Generally a great value for the price.
