Product Overview

The BLACK and DECKER BM3B is ideal for keeping your 6-Volt or 12-Volt battery fully charged when not in use. Simply plug the maintainer into any AC outlet and connect to your battery in any one three ways: Battery clips 12-Volt Dc accessory plug or the battery terminal rings. The BM3B will do the rest of the work, monitoring your battery with the Automatic micro processor, so that you can never over charge the battery.

Answer:
Yes, that is how this charger is supposed to work, it's a "maintainer". However in my experience, the charger will not kick in when it should and will let the battery go dead. I would not recommend this product.

120-Volt Battery Maintainer is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This exactly meets my needs by keeping the battery in my seldom-used pickup truck charged at all times. When considering price, utility and quality the charger meets all of my expectations. Good quality at a fair price, and excellent work by Home Depot special order folks.

When connected to a battery that needs charging this unit charges the battery and when the battery is fully charged this unit stops charging. If the battery loses some of the charge, this unit fails to detect the lower voltage and will not automatically recharge the battery. If this unit is disconnected from the battery and then reconnected to the battery this unit detects the lower voltage and starts changing. A battery maintainer should not have to be disconnected. I called the customer service number 1-877-571-2391 and described the problem and I was told to return the unit to the store and buy a different model. A work-around that I use is to plug this unit into a timer that is set to turn off the 120-volt power once a day for at least an hour. This trick ensures that this unit is forced to check the voltage of the battery and charge it if necessary.
