I purchased this 18 Volt B&D Trimmer during the summer of 2010 at Home Depot, and purchased a third battery and extra string kits, (2012 price $3.50 more per string set). I have a 1/4 acre property and I just make it with the three (3) 2.5-year-old batteries, doing three edger cuts along a 110-ft sidewalk and curb and two cuts along the 25 ft walk; trimming a raised garden bed 5' x 40 ft.; three sides of the house and 20' x 40 ft side of the garage, also around numerous planters and displays on the property. The automatic string feed work’s great and it is so simple when changing spools. I charge the batteries for 10 to 12 hours (plus) each on the days immediately before use. I now only have a problem with one of the original batteries not holding up as long as the others when doing the property. It was the best $115 or $120 investment (with extra battery) garden power tool purchase I ever made. No more gas model 2 cycle fuel mix, spark plugs; no more problems with starting, trim string and spool changing, tool weight and above all loud noise, all have gone away. The B&D Trimmer does take longer to cut/trim, it is not as fast as the gas model, until you count prep time, service, maintenance and time to correct usage problems of the latter unit.
This is the one tool that Black & Decker should get the Genius Award for, it is so simple to use and maintain.
If anyone is having problems with this Trimmer, read the Manufacturer’s Instructions; if the problem continues call the Manufacturer, you may have purchased a statistical deviation of a quality product (a lemon), have them replace it.

This is a great trimmer with more than enough power. I have a third of an acre lot in the country and can easily do the whole border of my lot along with edges of tress and flowerbeds. In spring when the lawn is very thick I use a battery and a half or so. Late summer when growth isn't as thick I can do it on a single battery. It has more than enough power to tackle overgrown areas with weeds and vines. It's more powerful than the corded trimmer I had before this one. It's light and comfortable to carry too. The auto spooler works great too. I've never had it tangle and am on my second season with the original spool.

I use this trimmer to trim and edge my lawn. I have a quarter acre sized lot and dragging round a cord can become cumbersome. A gas trimmer doesn't make sense because I only use the trimmer for about 5 minutes a week, and the extra weight of a gas engine is not worth it.
This unit is very easy to use. Make sure you have a fully charged battery, slide it in till you hear a click, and your ready to go. It is also very easy to change from trimmer to edger. Just a small twist and you can go from edging to trimming.
My batteries are sadly not able to hold a charge. I do not hold this against B&D, as this is a problem with all lithium batteries.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bill This is a excellent replacement for my gas weed eater.
I bought this trimmer on May 6th. I tested one somebody else had. It had only about a half charge and did well. It cut down (six) 3/4 inch stalks . I knew this was for me. I edged my yard and and my neighbors over growth. It took about 20-25 minutes. I needed to recharge. I was able to extra with it on one battery. I am pleased with this product and recommend it to anyone that has an average yard this device mowed right through it all. I think the thing that has people discouraged about this is the battery. You have to properly charge AND maintain it. Nicad batteries require different maintenance than lithium batteries. This also is very convenient to use.

I have a gas powered trimmer with an hedge trimmer attachment - it can be hard to start and cumbersome for trimming. The Black & Decker product is exactly what I was looking for. I have about 2/3 of an acre but have the yard setup not to require a lot of trimming. I used it this weekend - total run time about 8 minutes. Plently of battery power remaining. Just pressing a buttton to run it almost seems like a luxury. Seems more powerful than an old electric (corded) trimmer I have. Did a fine job with moderate depth grass. The recent deal was a very good one - along with the 2 batteries in the package a 3rd is included as a bonus.

We just bought a house with a small yard and wanted something uncomplicated. The double battery was a plus! The instructions say it takes about 4-5 uses/charges to set to its full capability; I sure hope so. The two batteries barely covered my small yard, the 2nd battery dying towards the end of the job. After a 2nd use, the spool ran out. Not sure if it was a trial and not a full spool; if so, buy extras beforehand if your yard is large...and extra batteries! We've now added an 18v B&D blower so we're covered.
Overall, simple to use and lightweight. Great safety trigger to prevent accidents. A good buy for small projects.
