I tried to start it and nothing happened, checked blade and it turned freely, put the battery straight to charger and light went from red to green, so then put battery back in mower and plugged it to handle and light went from red to green so it seems like battery and charger are good and looks like power in getting to battery though cord on mower, so could it be the key or button on side that is broke? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Had the same problem with my B&D. Depending on the age of the mower, it may be the brushes that conduct the electricity to the engine. The part is available at B&D about $10. I knew what the problem was but I am not great at working on equipment. Local repair shop stop supporting B&D.

Hi Mike,
I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site.
It seems that the battery is okay, so we must assume that the problem is in the starting sequence. Page 9 of the operator's manual has specific instructions:
The safety key needs to be fully inserted:
"Check to make sure safety key has been installed and is fully seated and
that button on switch housing is being completely depressed."
"ON-OFF SWITCH (BAIL HANDLE) - FIGURE J
Your mower is equipped with a special on-off switch system. To operate
the system, first push button J-1 on side of switch housing, then pull the
bail handle (switch lever) J-2 to the handlebar J-3.To turn the mower
off, just release the bail handle."
According to the video on the site, the order is consistent; press the button on the side and then pull the bail handle to start the motor.
It's hard for me to know for sure about the order in which you proceed to start, but I seems to be necessary to adhere to this specific order.
Copy and paste this address for the full manual:

If all else fails, consult a Black & Decker Service Center in your area (1-800-544-6986) or bring it to The Home Depot for repair.
Thank you for asking,

Long story short, when power was being supplied to the motor, the motor would not turn (it did turn freely by hand). I checked the brushes (they checked okay), checked the circuits, and checked the motor itself by bypassing everything between it and the batteries. I checked to verify that the motor was receiving 24ish volts, it was. Turned out the motor had just burnt out after about sever or eight years. I thought about trying to track down a replacement motor but I don't think it will be worth the effort after the cost associated - that, plus the charger is going and I would have to wire something else up to charge the batteries directly... so yeah... about to buy the B&D.

I bought this mower last season, this year when I pulled it out from the shed I had the same problem. Until I remembered, there is a button on the outside right of the handle, an orange button. Press that before you start the mower, it engages the blade.
Hope this helps.

I ordered a 2nd battery online online thru Home Depot. The 2nd Battery is even better than the original because it has a 3 level power indicator on it that can be checked by the push of a button. I also got an extra blade at the same time.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 542 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed in performance and in B&D customer service When I first got this mower in the heat of last summer, I noted that it left a row of clippings ejected out the right side of the mower. This happened whether I was mulching or bagging (rear bag). The amount was annoying, but something I could live with. However, the amount of clippings ejected when mowing this spring and summer's more lush grass, was well beyond what I could tolerate. I always had to rake afterwards. I contacted Black and Decker, who provided the location of an approved local service center. That service center sent it to the nearest Black and Decker center, who after 3 weeks, told me they found nothing wrong and returned it unchanged. My previous mower (also a cordless electric) did a good job, and my back-up reel mower does as good or better a job than this one. July 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed! I finally decided to upgrade from the reel mower that I've been using for years. I love that I can mow my yard without breathing in gas fumes, and that I'm not attached to a cord. My first mow was through some pretty overgrown grass, and although I had to take a couple passes over it, the mower did great and my lawn looks beautiful. It is pretty heavy (especially coming from a reel!) and my yard is really bumpy, so I think I'll eventually regret not spending that extra money for the self-propelled model... but I'm happy for now. And I love that I can fold the handles down to fit the mower into a tight spot in my small garage! July 29, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed Disappointed. Ordered online and had it shipped to my local Home Depot. Picked it up and unpacked it to find a tire was off. Started to install the handle just to find it didn't fit. There was 1/2 inch gap on both side between the handle and the mounting bracket. Contacted Home Depot to return for replacement. It wasn't in stock! Not available on line ! They couldn't fix it. Returned for a refund. Very disappointed i Black & Decker. Where is the quality control? December 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does a great job, exceeds 1/3 acre rating So far so good. I have a half acre, most of which is mowed with my riding mower, but I still need a walk behind to get around the house perimeter, and between a large number of pine trees and other obstacles. These locations are too awkward for the rider to reach. Nevertheless, I wanted to see just how long this would last on a full charge. As it turns out I was able to mow my entire half acre, with the power starting to drop off only at the very end. No earplugs needed with this one. A battery gauge would be good, but you can tell by listening for the most part. August 12, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Mower for my small yard & bad shoulder! This mower is great! Comes almost completely assembled, easy start (no more killing my bad shoulder trying to pull start mower!), battery was ready in a couple hours after unpacking & putting it on charger, and mower has more power than I thought a battery powered mower would have! Mower did not have any problem cutting down the 10 inches of grass that had grown since I mowed last! I had to go slower than normal and empty the grass catcher often but it made it through the whole yard without recharging the battery. Great that mower folds and stores upright. And no more gas and oil - or running the mower until it runs out of gas so it doesn't go bad in the mower. Have mowed several times since initial mowing and mower now zips right through the grass. Definitely glad I made purchase - hopefully mower will last for years. August 19, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Electric Mowers are Great I have had mine for 5 years, replaced the blade twice and just recently bought a new battery for it. Although the old battery still works my 1/4 acre yard has gotten thicker and mowing area has increased due to removal of some bushes so I wanted the extra assurance that I could mow entire yard in one session. For father's day I ordered an identical mower for my 80 yrs young father. He was having trouble pulling the string on his gas powered one. He AND my mom love using this electric cordless mower. It is easy to start, use and can be wheeled into the garage, plugged in and their done. They can do their entire yard on one battery charge. August 5, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Great! I looked at a number of electric mowers, and this one is the only model I found that had everything I was looking for. Its a good size mower and is extremely easy to use. It might look in the pictures like it would be a heavy machine, but its actually very light and handles very well. Its easy as can be to switch out batteries for larger mows, I bought an extra battery for that purpose. Its also nice that it easily collapses to fit in an out-of-the-way place in my garage. All in all, I'm quite pleased. June 20, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Battery operated.....YEAH! We are so pleased to be rid of electrical cords! The mower did a wonderful job on our lawn for over 30 minutes, and we never felt the battery was loosing steam. July 16, 2014
