I tried to start it and nothing happened, checked blade and it turned freely, put the battery straight to charger and light went from red to green, so then put battery back in mower and plugged it to handle and light went from red to green so it seems like battery and charger are good and looks like power in getting to battery though cord on mower, so could it be the key or button on side that is broke? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Had the same problem with my B&D. Depending on the age of the mower, it may be the brushes that conduct the electricity to the engine. The part is available at B&D about $10. I knew what the problem was but I am not great at working on equipment. Local repair shop stop supporting B&D.

Hi Mike,
I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site.
It seems that the battery is okay, so we must assume that the problem is in the starting sequence. Page 9 of the operator's manual has specific instructions:
The safety key needs to be fully inserted:
"Check to make sure safety key has been installed and is fully seated and
that button on switch housing is being completely depressed."
"ON-OFF SWITCH (BAIL HANDLE) - FIGURE J
Your mower is equipped with a special on-off switch system. To operate
the system, first push button J-1 on side of switch housing, then pull the
bail handle (switch lever) J-2 to the handlebar J-3.To turn the mower
off, just release the bail handle."
According to the video on the site, the order is consistent; press the button on the side and then pull the bail handle to start the motor.
It's hard for me to know for sure about the order in which you proceed to start, but I seems to be necessary to adhere to this specific order.
Copy and paste this address for the full manual:

If all else fails, consult a Black & Decker Service Center in your area (1-800-544-6986) or bring it to The Home Depot for repair.
Thank you for asking,

I am buying a B&D to replace an old Homelite. Regardless, my Homelite went the same way - full charge, no motion. I tore the thing apart, as I know just enough to be dangerous. Long story short, when power was being supplied to the motor, the motor would not turn (it did turn freely by hand). I checked the brushes (they checked okay), checked the circuits, and checked the motor itself by bypassing everything between it and the batteries. I checked to verify that the motor was receiving 24ish volts, it was. Turned out the motor had just burnt out after about sever or eight years. I thought about trying to track down a replacement motor but I don't think it will be worth the effort after the cost associated - that, plus the charger is going and I would have to wire something else up to charge the batteries directly... so yeah... about to buy the B&D.

I bought this mower last season, this year when I pulled it out from the shed I had the same problem. Until I remembered, there is a button on the outside right of the handle, an orange button. Press that before you start the mower, it engages the blade.
Hope this helps.

I ordered a 2nd battery online online thru Home Depot. The 2nd Battery is even better than the original because it has a 3 level power indicator on it that can be checked by the push of a button. I also got an extra blade at the same time.

I no longer use and sold the Black & Decker mower. I bought an EGO 20" lithium Ion mower 2 years ago. The Black & Decker takes many hours to charge. If your yard is large you may need two batteries. The current B&D battery is a 36V 12A battery. My original battery was a 36V 10A battery. I had two batteries so I could finish the yard when the grass was high or wet from rain.

19 in. 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower with Removable Battery is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 542.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Lawn Mower on the Planet I spent too many weeks researching what lawn mower to purchase. I finally purchased and used this mower yesterday and it far exceeded expectations. I have a significant amount of grass to mow so I was concerned about the battery staying fully charged - but I had more than enough juice left to go over (in the pursuit of perfection) both the front and back lawns twice! Grass was also a little wet from previous day's rain - but again, no worries. Note: I let the battery charge for 24 hours before my first use. And it's also great that you can easily carry on a conversation while the mower is running. So I am left to ponder: Why on Earth does anyone still use a gas powered mower?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Second one, Fit my needs perfectly Strong points include easy height adjustment, no fooling with gas or oil, and consistent instant trouble free operation. This is my second B/D electric mower. After 7 years the first one has nearly worn out so it was probably about the same price to buy a new one versus fixing wheels, blade, skirt and a new battery. I have a premier grass lawn and also several larger areas that are heavy weeds. This unit handles either with ease. Although 70, I still like the exercise of a push mower, so that is not an issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite feature is the push button start. I was using a push reel (no motor) for the good of the environment, and decided to upgrade to electric. When the cordless feature and removable battery were available I was sold. The ability to choose between bagging the clippings or mulching is very convenient. I bag when the back lawn gets long before I cut it. I easily rolled through tall, thick patches without losing power. I cut the front and back lawn (small lot) without running the battery down, recharged it in an hour and set it aside until the next use. I haven't used a gas powered pull starter in years because I have been using a push reel without a motor, so my favorite feature on the CM1936 is the push button start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked like a champ right out of the box I was VERY apprehensive about spending this kind of money on a lawnmower - period - based on the size of my yard (much too big for a pushreel, too big for a corded mower). Not to worry...out of the box the battery took less than 12 hrs to fully charge. Our lawn normally takes 45-60 minutes to mow so we somewhat went at warp speed just in case the battery wasn't gutsy enough. Also not to worry...lots of power left over after 45 minutes. All the concerns in other reviews about weight did not apply - this handles and feels the same as the Craftsman 6 HP 21 inch gas mower that I retired with the success of this electric mower. I also like the fact that you can charge the battery either in the mower or on the bench.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this electric workhorse When I had a smaller yard I had a lighter, quieter, green mower. Now that I have 1/2 an acre I needed to step up my mowing game but still wanted a rechargeable electric. I've had the Black and Decker for 2 months and it does everything I want it to do. I can get the whole yard done on one charge and it makes a nice wide and even swath through the yard.
Date published: 2013-09-23
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great! I looked at a number of electric mowers, and this one is the only model I found that had everything I was looking for. Its a good size mower and is extremely easy to use. It might look in the pictures like it would be a heavy machine, but its actually very light and handles very well. Its easy as can be to switch out batteries for larger mows, I bought an extra battery for that purpose. Its also nice that it easily collapses to fit in an out-of-the-way place in my garage. All in all, I'm quite pleased.
Date published: 2013-06-21
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised We purchased our mower in the spring of 2014. I've used it twice so far and it does a very nice job. I'm using it to mow around the house keeping the length down until the regular mowers come to finish the whole yard. I'm almost 60 years old, and its a little heavier than I expected. Its a little harder to push around on the soft, soggy, spring turf. Once it dries out I think the weight of the machine will be less of an issue. The battery life last longer than I do and the cutting is as good as any other mower I've ever had. I would like to see the price down around $150-$175 but its not bad.
Date published: 2014-05-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I needed! I finally decided to upgrade from the reel mower that I've been using for years. I love that I can mow my yard without breathing in gas fumes, and that I'm not attached to a cord. My first mow was through some pretty overgrown grass, and although I had to take a couple passes over it, the mower did great and my lawn looks beautiful. It is pretty heavy (especially coming from a reel!) and my yard is really bumpy, so I think I'll eventually regret not spending that extra money for the self-propelled model... but I'm happy for now. And I love that I can fold the handles down to fit the mower into a tight spot in my small garage!
