Battery is removed to charge. The model from HD is LST400 which has 1 battery, the LST420 has 2 batteries. Last check I did was HD does not carry the 420.

A battery charger comes with it. You take the battery out, slip it into the charger where it can stay until ready to re-insert in the trimmer for the next use.

A small plugin charger is included but it is a slow recharge. They make a rapid charger if you want but this one works fine. Just takes a few hours to recharge.

Out of the box, the initial charge took about 10 hours. The next time I had to charge it, it took about 8 hours. I get about 1 hour of run-time before needing to recharge the battery.

From dead it takes around 4 hours in my experience. I generally don't let it get all the way down so it usually charges back within an hour or so. If you have a large yard. I would definitely get a spare battery.

Hi dataway,

Yes, all cartridges that have been loaded with trimmer line can be reloaded with bulk line.
The cartridge must be in proper working order before you can reuse it. If it shows obvious signs of wear, replace it with an AF-100 pre-filled cartridge.
To refill your empty cartridge, measure off approximately 20' of line that matches the original line that your unit came with. In this case, use .065'' size line.
If your unit has two cutting lines, cut the 20' of line into two equal length lines. Anchor each line into the hub and load the string by pulling both lines onto the spool.
If it has one cutting line, anchor it onto the hub and pull the line onto it by rotating the spool backwards, pulling the string onto it.
Thank you for asking,
-Travis Read Less

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 183 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great cordless trimmer After reading all the reviews on different brands of cordless string trimmers, I decided to purchase this one and am very happy I did. The battery lasts almost a full hour of trimming on 'high'; much longer than other brand reviews. The trimmer is light weight and easy to use. I like that you can adjust the length based on the user (short or tall person). The only negative I have so far is it does take a good 8-10 hours to fully recharge the battery; a second back-up battery would be helpful if you need to do more than 1 hour of trimming at a time. June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by note to all you can buy a 15 minute battery charger for your batteries you would time to let the first battery cool and charge before you killed the next. i have the fifteen minute charger and it charges the batteries fully in 15 minutes. June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Great! Getting Another Having owned multiple edgers, this one is by far my favorite. It has less power than the corded ones (obviously) but I appreciate that because it's easier to control and I can get right up against the shrubbery without it veering off into them and damaging them. I'm not buying new spools of string as often as with others. It runs 45 min to an hour on a charge, which is a good timer for me not to overdo it. For an ordinary yard you could clean it up on one charge; we have a lumpy and unmowable baby orchard that needs the weeds kept from growing taller than the trees so I have a lot of area to keep under control with it. The high power mode is nice for the clumps of really thick grass, but the lower mode is good for nearly everything. May 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ideal for Residential Use (< 1 acre) I was concerned that I would need a second battery to handle my 3/4-acre yard, but this battery is more than up to the task. I've used the trimmer a half dozen times so far and am very satisfied. As a trimmer newbie, I'm still getting used to setting the right angle, but overall the trimmer is very easy to use. The battery is easy to re-charge and install. There seems to be more than enough power to trim around landscaping, but I have not yet tried to use this for edging. June 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Did the job without all of the gas fumes. This trimmer/edger was very easy to assemble. The ability to go from trimmer to edger couldn't be simpler-just a press of a button, twist & turn. The battery lasted long enough to trim & edge our entire yard. Two things about it kept me from giving it five stars: *I had to keep it on the stronger #2 gear, because the battery is too weak at #1. *In order to adjust the length of the shaft, you have to use a Phillips screw driver to loosen the clamp. I find that feature particularly disturbing, since all they had to do was use a twist & pull clamp instead, to make it much more user friendly. Once you have the length adjusted, & the battery on #2, though, you can go to town on a fairly large yard--ours is approximately 1,000 square feet. Our drive, patio, curb look like a professional edged them, & the weeds didn't know what hit them. (You may have to recharge your battery once, if you have let your yard go for a while, & the weeds are heavy.) June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great, long lasting trimmer I was skeptical if the 20 V would be enough battery life, but it has been fantastic for basic yard cleanup. I have yet to use the more powerful (more battery drain) setting, but the eco setting has been perfect, and it lasts at least 45 minutes. I've done around my yard perimeter 3-4 times and it has yet to discharge the battery. It comes with a spare battery anyway, and I just got the B&D 20 V chainsaw, which is also excellent for light use, and can swap out the batteries for both tools. Very light, quieter than gas, instant on. Couldn't be more pleased. May 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best edger/trimmer ever! So easy to handle for this 69 y/o lady who takes care of a large yard adjacent to a forested area. The trimmer's 2 speeds give you plenty of cutting power. The batteries long-lasting and provide all the power I need to trim/edge my large grassy area surrounded by blackberry bushes and forest area. May 31, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love it My first electric yard tool but was very impressed and is extremely convenient. The only bad thing I wish the battery was stronger but I would definitely recommend June 7, 2016
