Battery is removed to charge. The model from HD is LST400 which has 1 battery, the LST420 has 2 batteries. Last check I did was HD does not carry the 420.

A battery charger comes with it. You take the battery out, slip it into the charger where it can stay until ready to re-insert in the trimmer for the next use.

A small plugin charger is included but it is a slow recharge. They make a rapid charger if you want but this one works fine. Just takes a few hours to recharge.

Out of the box, the initial charge took about 10 hours. The next time I had to charge it, it took about 8 hours. I get about 1 hour of run-time before needing to recharge the battery.

From dead it takes around 4 hours in my experience. I generally don't let it get all the way down so it usually charges back within an hour or so. If you have a large yard. I would definitely get a spare battery.

Hi dataway,

Yes, all cartridges that have been loaded with trimmer line can be reloaded with bulk line.
The cartridge must be in proper working order before you can reuse it. If it shows obvious signs of wear, replace it with an AF-100 pre-filled cartridge.
To refill your empty cartridge, measure off approximately 20' of line that matches the original line that your unit came with. In this case, use .065'' size line.
If your unit has two cutting lines, cut the 20' of line into two equal length lines. Anchor each line into the hub and load the string by pulling both lines onto the spool.
If it has one cutting line, anchor it onto the hub and pull the line onto it by rotating the spool backwards, pulling the string onto it.
Thank you for asking,
-Travis Read Less

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 198 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by What a piece! I purchased this trimmer a few weeks ago. It's easy to use but the battery is already failing to charge. I've only used the trimmer twice! When I pay $90 for a tool, I expect it work more than two times. I should have listened to my instincts and purchased a Dewalt trimmer or stuck with my old gas trimmer. Buyer beware! August 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Super easy and convenient This trimmer is awesome. The reverse setting with the roller-guide for edging is simply great. The auto feed trimmer chord feature is very helpful and leads to more careful handling instead of the old slam on the ground for wire. The best thing is there is no mixture problem to deal with. No more oil or gas to delicately balance on a gas trimmer, plus the fumes and smells on top. The only thing I'd change is the battery life but I knew that going forward and is just about enough for me to do my entire front and back within an hour. You can also buy additional batteries or if you use other b&d electric 20v lithium tools, the batteries are interchangeable. Truly a great quality product. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Workhorse Trimmer I read several reviews before purchasing this trimmer and was a little skeptical I admit. But I have since become a big fan of this little workhorse. I had a more expensive competitor brand and returned after 3 uses. This trimmer is perfect for edging and trimming our property. Edging approximately 130 feet Trimming approximately 150 feet No battery issues. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Solid purchase Bought this trimmer because I had arm surgery and needed something my wife could handle. Trimmer is lightweight has ample power and does a good job. Like all battery powered trimmers eventually the battery will no longer recharge and need to be replaced.. Will eventually go back to my gas powered trimmer but for now am pleased whit this purchase. Had a little trouble getting the line to self feed but is now working fine. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Some Advantages While it is very helpful to no longer have to deal with the electric cord, I agree with others that this string trimmer lacks power. I have noticed a real difference between it and my now defunct electric trimmer but I didn't want to go back to a corded trimmer and a gas powered one was never even considered. I would have been willing to pay more for a little more power and a little longer run time on the battery. However, with patience, it does get the job done. July 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product The battery has just enough power and run time for my small yard. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by better than what I was expecting Did not want to spend a lot, was a little worried about other reviews complaining about battery life being short but bought it anyway since we don't have a real big yard. I have used it once a week for four weeks without recharging. love the auto line feed. I thought the guide wheel and 90 degree rotate for edging was a lame gimmick but found I really love that feature the most. it wouldn't hurt to have more power but for the price I got more than I was expecting and quite pleased with this purchase. I give it five stars based on what I got for the price. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product! I needed an easy and light weedeater to trim my lawn. The battery life is about an hour and cuts perfectly. The trimming feature is also great around my sidewalks and curbs. July 19, 2016
