Why do they call it "cordless" when it uses string

I have had horrible luck with string trimmers in the past. Hoping to find something that uses blades instead of that annoying string. Why are these products called "cordless" when some kind of cord is used to knock down weeds? The category "cordess" raised my hopes, which are now dashed. Every product description I opened uses string, which is a variant of "cord."
Asked by: Alice
Cordless means it runs on a battery, not electricity. Since it doesn't use electricity it does need an electrical cord, so it's cordless. Think cordless phone. :)

I am 78 years old and I use mine to do my yard and it takes about 45 minutes. I do admit I rest a minute or so after 20 minutes. Battery is not a problem.

As a woman in her mid-60s and never before having used a trimmer, I was pleased at the results. Took a little adapting to holding at the right angle. Also could not initially discern how to make the trimmer start! Had to hold TWO buttons together at the same time in order for it to work. I like the adjustment of the handle as well. Due to purchasing late in the season, only needed to use it twice so have not yet needed to replace the line. Hoping that will be a simple process. Black and Decker makes high quality tools, equipment and implements. I would definitely recommend this!

Our yard takes 40-50 minutes to edge/trim and this trimmer has made the job much easier. I leave the power setting on 6, so no problems with any areas not getting trimmed. The battery has not been an issue, it has held up through the entire yard. This was a replacement as the first one stopped working after a few uses (felt like the trigger/switch wasn't engaging). No problem with exchange at our local H.D.. So glad to no longer mix fuel and lug the heavy gas trimmer! The self feed line is a bit generous, so keep plenty of extra spools on hand. Would prefer this model have a bump feed, but not a deal breaker.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacement for similar B&D models, but now cordless I like B&D because this is only the third similar trimmer I have purchased in the last 25-30 years. The first two were corded. The trimmer was easy to assemble and being cordless provides better maneuverability and range of use. I'm having a little trouble getting comfortable with the extra safety features. For example, 1) to make the unit run you have to hold down the lock off button and, at the same time, squeeze the trigger; if you release the trigger you have to again go through the same steps to initiate running the unit. 2) You cannot begin recharging the battery immediately when the battery runs out of power. You have to first let the battery cool off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great to finally be cordless This was my final battery powered yard tool to acquire and it didn't disappoint me to finally retire my 50' extension cord. The automatic line feed works well so far and sure beats the heck out of pounding the spool on the ground. The battery saving RPM adjustment really works well. The only downside to going to this battery powered trimmer is the weight gain due to the battery. I look at it as a good tradeoff since I don't have to mess with a cord. The battery matches my B&D lawn mower and hedge trimmer too, so I always have ample batteries to swap out for all three. I highly recommend this trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much Better! I originally owed a Black and Decker trimmer for about 9 years and it gave up after serving me quite well. The equivalent which I also bought at Home Depot had a wheel to guide it. It had a 20 volt battery on it and the power was fine. The problem I had was that dirt and grass kept clogging up the wheel area keeping it from working properly. I returned it and ordered the 40-volt unit on line and it was delivered quite quickly to my home. With no wheel, and much more power I whipped (no pun intended) right through my edges and it is great. I just need to learn a bit more control and I hope that this unit will last as long or longer than the previous one I happily used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best cordless trimmer I have ever owned The best B&D cordless trimmer I have ever owned. This works so well, it's easy to understand why B&D doesn't have it on the floor at Home Depot or Lowes. The B&D models on the floor simply don't match up and I've owned a number of them over the years. Does everything well and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is so powerful, you go through spools of string way too fast. $20 per 3 pack gets expensive and I've resorted to buying string in bulk and stringing spools myself. You have to remember to dial back the output and don't start and stop as often. But the 40V power gives it an edge and glad I found a review on it and purchased it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zoom, Zoom This is great. Previously I had another brand trimmer that shall we say didn't Worx...horrible. This is just perfect. The grass on the one side of my home hadn't been cut at all this year (June). My neighbors thought that I was going to rent the goats from the farm down the road to mow the grass it was so high. They could not believe that this trimmer took it all down at the medium speed. I am a 70-year old woman and can handle this with ease. It is light weight. The 40-volt lithium battery gives you good run time so I think most homeowners would be able to finish the job on one charge. If you want a lightweight battery operated trimmer this is the way to go.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not like a gas trimmer It does trim light grass well. It gets 20 - 30 min run time on low. The edger is awkward for me to use. It would be better if the edger was like the Worx trimmer, which is a walk behind with a wheel. This one you walk perpendicular to the trimmer shaft. It works ok, no gas to mix, and no cranking to get it started. Just slap in a charged battery and go to it.
