Rated 2.1 out of 5 by 131 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Plastic broke, more expensive to fix than to replace I had this trimmer for 2 summers, and it worked well during that time, mostly. I can't say I really thought much about it- seemed like an average trimmer to me. The first day out this summer it broke about 5 minutes into the day. A plastic gear in the housing stripped, and in order to replace this $.50 piece I have to replace the entire motor. The motor, a new drive belt, and shipping, is just barely more expensive that buying a new one (and that's from other online parts providers; the parts are even more expensive from B&D itself). I'm looking forward to purchasing a different model. April 21, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Engineered to Fail!!! Works great until it fails, and it WILL fail! As numerous users have mentioned, you may get one or two seasons use out of the GH-1000 until the motor-mounted pulley melts. You have to purchase a new motor to repair as the pulley is permanently attached - $60 is the lowest price I could find for the part online. September 10, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cheaply built Looks good on the outside but the cheap plastic gear on the motor will melt . You have to buy the entire motor to get the gear and that with shipping costs more than a new trimmer. So this is a throw away after just a few uses. Their other electric models are probably built the same. Check my photo August 20, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This is a terrible product There is plenty of power in this unit, which is the good news. The bad news is the head is horribly designed, impossible to load and at times comes apart while trimming. I do not dispute that some people had good experiences with this trimmer. I did too for a short while. Nonetheless, after loading several times, you will find that the cap that holds the the disk on the head of the unit releases during trimming. Consider yourself lucky if you can find it when that happens. PS, I am very competent with tools, etc. Sadly, this thing is very poorly designed which is why I am on this site looking for a new trimmer. This one is headed to the curb. March 31, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Piece of junk! As others have said in their reviews, don't waste time or money on this product. It truly is a piece of junk. We have a small yard, and at minimum use an entire spool each time we edge & trim. After only the 4th time using this product, the plastic spool casing broke. Even though the trimming arm is adjustable, this product is not made for people 5'4" and below. The handle grip is uncomfortable at this height and you must stretch your arm completely straight to achieve control. The edging safety flip bar is unusable for us as we have to flip it up to get close enough to edge our grass. Will be trying to return to Home Depot as soon as possible! June 5, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Decent product I've had mine for about two months now. The best thing about it is the motor is very powerful, which makes most jobs a snap. The flip down guard makes edging a lot more smooth, too, I'm very satisfied with that aspect. I agree with other users that the auto-feed doesn't always work. I've only had a few problems with this feature, though, and the problem has always been that the string was not wound quite right. This is the reason I deducted a star, because you really do have to wind it exactly as the manual says, but I can't say that I've ever owned a bump-head trimmer that didn't have the same problem, too, if you didn't wind the string just right. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Save your money - Garbage The first Grasshog XP I purchased broke within 30 minutes of the purchase. The store replaced it no problem. The second one worked great for about 4 months of use (Around a year in time). Then it broke like the 1st I purchased. Since I owned it for so long I no longer had the receipt. So I could not return it. So I took a look at the problem. The belt slips off the motor and once it starts happening it will not stay. I have "fixed" this product numerous times only to have the belt come lose again and again. It's not worth the hassle. Also this is the second Black & Decker sting trimmer I have purchased. I won't purchase another. May 23, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cuts Clean, Cuts Fast! This is a great Black & Decker product. I read all the reviews, even the one's in Consumer Reports before jumping in and buying this unit! Since there were so many 1 star reviews on here, I was skeptical of the build quality for this product, but I was pleasantly surprised when I finally brought one home. No problems with the auto feed on the line, I think what others are having trouble with may be user error. I realized while using it that you need to let it spin freely so that the string gets auto loaded. It does not do it while you are cutting and edging. Great product and more powerful than any trimmer I've used in the past! May 28, 2009
