Answer:
You can find out what that code means by untwisting your alarm unit and comparing to the numbers given on the back of the unit. If you have replaced the battery with a known good battery more then probable it is the radiation source within the unit--it is probably defective and will require replacement of that alarm unit.

I continue to see info regarding "unplugging" old unit and "plugging" in new unit. I do not find anything on the unit that "unplugs" or "plugs". Once twisting the unit from the mount/base, there are 3-sets of wires with caps. Am I missing something that "plugs / unplugs"?

Answer:
If you have a combination A/C power with battery back-up you will have a wire harness plug-in connector in the back of the unit. Twist off the unit from its ceiling base and you will see it. It is shock proof.

Answer:
The actual detector plugs into the unit that was hard wired into your electrical circuits. If you buy a replacement you can leave the original base wired and unplug the old one and plush in the new one.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 92 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by BRK Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Perfect Solution! I replaced two BRK Smoke Alarms with two BRK Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms in our home. They were compatible with the existing multi-alarm system and matched perfectly in the ceiling. Great solution to adding carbon monoxide alarm capability to our home. The removal of the old smoke alarms and installation of the two new smoke & carbon monoxide alarms was "plug and play"! April 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good protection Nice, compact. Can work on battery alone. Easy to wire. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by simple installation Easy connection, replacing existing connected alarms. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product The unit was a replacement so we didn't have to rewire it. Just plugged it in and let it beep to all the other ones in the house. The first one only lasted 4 years. We have 3 others installed at the same time so we'll see if the others start malfunctioning. Suppose to have a 10 year warranty. July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Works As Expected I had an exact duplicate alarm fail, so I was happy that this replacement screwed righ into the existing housing, it made installation a bit easier. Only draw back is that it is not readily available in store so I had to have about 2 weeks where one of my alarms was not connected up. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Smoke Alarm This product has always worked well for us, and we were pleased to find the exact replacement at Home Depot. Ordering online went smoothly, and the installation was easy. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Replacement We purchased this unit as a replacement for our original unit, which was 12 years old. We replaced a BRK unit (BRK is now part of First Alert). No rewiring was required as the plug was identical to the old one. We did have to replace the base, but that was only two screws. The entire operation took less than fifteen minutes, and the unit has worked perfectly since installation. April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easily installed protection I replaced my outdated smoke detectors with these newer model dual sensors. Best thing I could've done to protect me and my family from unexpected tragedies. Easy install. Don't forget to switch the breaker off during install. Testing the new sensors went very well after install. Very loud alarm. Perfect product that gives you peace of mind that you and the people you love will be alerted in time to get out if the unimaginable ever happens. April 13, 2016
