My belief is that rather than actually failing a self test, every unit is programmed to provide 'end of life' alerts after the warranty period expires. Without getting technical, there are several methods to measure time. The original units were warrantied for 5 years, and the newer units are now 7 years. My unit just failed 2 months after the warranty expired, and I am planning to replace it with the same model.

Hardwired Interconnected Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Voice Alert is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Purchase Connected perfectly with my home hardwired Smoke Detector system. My other units were 13 years old so I decided to replace them. I connected this one in the Kitchen because the "ion" one sometimes went off when the oven door was opened after use. This one is photo and carbon monoxide. The only bad thing is that carbon monoxide units don't last more than 10 years. The connection is standard so I just plugged it into the unit so no skill needed for wiring. This one will talk too when you test it. I have had no false alarms. Upstairs, I used new detectors that had both ion and photo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple replacement.just plug in. A perfect fit to replace the old unit (6 yrs. old.). The unit is only built to last about 5-6 yrs. due to lack of longevity of CO detector element, I believe. I would recommend this unit though, for its features and quality and especially for the best price at HD.

We've had trouble with half of them. After the first few months 3 of them would go off for no reason. When they go off it is very loud and scary to everyone, which I suppose is good, but not for false alarms. Our contractor replaced those units and mentioned that many are faulty. After that everything was OK for a while. They did detect high CO correctly when my contractor was doing work in our basement of the house, which was great. A couple of years later another 3 are failing for no good reason. I replaced the batteries, checked the hard wires, and it doesn't make a difference. IMHO they are unreliable. I had battery powered detectors for years before these and never had any issues. Another annoyances: When the batteries get low you get a very loud chirping noise. Usually in the middle of the night. There's no indicator light for low battery on the outside either. Since these alarms are hardwired, why not a more subtle indicator to check the batteries? Unplugging the hard electric wire is really difficult. You have to really pull and twist it out. I don't like doing this with live wires. I've had to unplug them a few times when they were reporting false alarms or they would never shut off. They have fairly poor plastic construction overall. Opening the battery door is a pain in the neck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very frustrated, having issues with these SC7010BV units! I have these units installed in 2010 (qty 10) in my house and the last 2 years they are all alarming for no rhyme or reason in the middle of the night scaring my children. The circuits are fine interconnected, I called the fire dept and utility if we had any voltage dips below the units power supply threshold range but all has been fine. I have reinvested in several replacements and they continue to alarm, beep chirp at various times and never the same unit. I replaced batteries, checked and tested my connections. Why would they program these to warn alarm as a defective unit at varying times and right after the 5 yr warranty period?
