My belief is that rather than actually failing a self test, every unit is programmed to provide 'end of life' alerts after the warranty period expires. Without getting technical, there are several methods to measure time. The original units were warrantied for 5 years, and the newer units are now 7 years. My unit just failed 2 months after the warranty expired, and I am planning to replace it with the same model.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Co2 and Smoke Detector Very easy installation. Installed 5 units in home in less than 45 minutes. So far no false alarms, for CO2 and smoke alerts. Will recommend it to friends. Only concern was the packaging lacked protection as no bubble was used and boxes bounced around in shipment, but items were not broken. Just lucky I guess. rm Florida March 29, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very frustrated, having issues with these SC7010BV units! I have these units installed in 2010 (qty 10) in my house and the last 2 years they are all alarming for no rhyme or reason in the middle of the night scaring my children. The circuits are fine interconnected, I called the fire dept and utility if we had any voltage dips below the units power supply threshold range but all has been fine. I have reinvested in several replacements and they continue to alarm, beep chirp at various times and never the same unit. I replaced batteries, checked and tested my connections. Why would they program these to warn alarm as a defective unit at varying times and right after the 5 yr warranty period? December 2, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works as advertised I replaced the previous smoke/carbonmonoxide detector with this like item. The reason I like these detectors is because they could be connected to power and therefore the batteries last longer. I also hooked up the communication link that enables the speakers of multiple detectors to work in tandem to signal an alert and location on all of the detectors connected, which works very well. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by FANTASTIC Smoke - Carbon Monoxide product! I am very impressed with the performance of this smoke and carbon monoxide detector. The BRK (First alert) device was simple and easy to install. It looks nice, easy to test and change out batteries.. The unit comes with a mounting plate, color coded pigtail snap clip, Lith. Batteries and Temp. dust cover. You have to provide the wire run, circuit breaker, box and mounting screws. The assembly is a snap! Instructions were easy to read and were in multiple languages. It takes about 5 mins to install the device...match color wire to appropriate wire run, Snap the pigtail to the unit. and CCW twist on the unit to the mount plate. Pull the clear plastic tab to allow battery contact and your done..Very Loud and I like that it warns weather its smoke or CO. and that it will get its twin to mention the exact same thing. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works well and reasonable price Bought this to replace a multi type detector that failed after 6 years. It was the same type as this one and we have multiples in our house. What I liked was it was clear it was not working anymore, the detector even told you there was an issue. A quick look at the back of the detector and we ordered the same model. Can't fault one of of many for failing a bit early. September 22, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by As Advertised This was a replacement for an end of life device. The design and installation of the model purchased was an exact plug-in of the original model. Replacement was a plug and play. July 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by These were a direct replacement for my old ones; no need to rewire. The plug fit right into the new unit. The unit in our basement saved our lives one day. We got a loud audible alarm stating, "Evacuate--high carbon monoxide level in the basement." I went to the basement to check all sources of ignition like the water heater and gas furnace; no problems encountered. Then, I remembered I'd used my propane torch to char a carving I did about 30 minutes before the alarm sounded. I went to pick up the torch by the nozzle and burned my hand! I guess the nozzle valve was leaking although there was no visible signs of fire. The leak must have been so minute that when the valve was closed a tiny ignition must have continued. Normally, I unscrew the nozzle when I'm done using the torch but I thought that I might have to darken the carving more; I did not. So, the CO sensor was so sensitive that it picked up the increased CO level. Kudos to the designer. I recommend these combination smoke and CO detectors to every one in need. My units are hard-wired and interconnected. Just remember to change the back-up batteries yearly; I do it when we change the clocks to DST. June 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product, Easy to Install Smoke/CO alarms were easy to install. The setting of the alarm location was easy once you got the hang of holding the button down until the chosen location was announced. Certain locations were not available (e.g. hallway). The pin that holds the battery tray in was difficult to remove (in order to change batteries). This may be intentional so that the alarm is not tampered with. Alarm went off once without any discernable cause (during summer with no combustion taking place, e.g. furnace) in one year of ownership. June 1, 2013
