Always check with the manufacturer since they all have different installation requirements. A quick stop at Hardibacker's site shows: "Fasten HardieBacker cement board with specified nails or screws every 8” over the entire surface. Keep fasteners between 3/8" and 3/4" from board edges and 2" from board corners," You can maintain this only where there are support studs for walls, obviously, otherwise this rule is to be maintained regardless of placement on walls, counter tops, ceilings or wherever. There are also other standards worth checking out on their site. Such as recommended fasteners and placing board into a bed of thinset, for example. Check

#10 x 1-5/8 in. Zinc-Plated Steel Flat-Head Square Cement Board Screws (600-Pack) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great screws for backer board These screws are perfect for use when laying down backer board. They have a good coating on them, slight barbs under the heads to help the countersink themselves and the square drive heads are great plus they even come with a 2" square drive bit that fits right into your impact and they come in a good case, I reuse the case for other things when I'm done with the screws. Also they r a great deal when bought in bulk like this. These are the only screws I use when laying backer board when I do a tiling job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value I am a professional tile-setter who uses this product all the time. The person recommending Phillips heads is dead wrong. Perhaps he is not using an impact drill? (Essential for installing cement board.) We have tried a variety of similar square head screws available from different manufacturers but these, unlike others: 1.) Fit snugly. They stay on the bit (so you can load your screw and punch it into the board to start it) 2.) Are cut more accurate so the tips bite in without falling over or spinning in place. 3.) Are more rarely filled with coating in the square head (though still a few in each box) 4.) Save time! (for all the above reasons) 5.) Are reasonably priced All these things matter. A lot! We now use these exclusively.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Strip like crazy Hardibacker doesn't bow so as soon as you start drilling the board lifts off the wall and before you can get it flush, the head on the screws strip. Go with a standard Philips
