Do you need to pre-treat/seal it prior to installation?

For people who have purchased it prior. How is it standing up to the weather so far? Will it make it difference if I seal it prior to installation? How did you keep it off ground from moisture?
Asked by: Amy
I bought 2 of these LIGHT colored bamboo rolls...they are now BLACK, full of a search on line, check to see what others are saying... You do need to seal with an oil, but no guarantee.....spray and SCRUB the mildew off, comes right back!

Can you paint or stain darker?

Asked by: Noreen
Not very easily. We applied a high quality Thompson's Water Sealant with a light stain and it does not stick to these very well. Seemed like it had some sort of coating preventing the penetration.

1 in. D x 6 ft. H x 8 ft. W Natural Rolled Bamboo Fence is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 138.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from moldy mess We purchased 8 rolls to attach to a chain link fence. It was easy to install and looked great at first. We followed the directions for cleaning and sealing it. 2 months later, it is covered with black mold. I was told that this happens if the bamboo is harvested too soon. So, in spite of the company's web site saying they use quality bamboo, they apparantly dont.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's so easy Needed a solution to provide privacy on one side of our house that had a 4' chain link fence about 70' in length. I contacted the owner to get permission to attach bamboo and he was happy about the idea. The product is solid and well made. We had it delivered to HD 9 8' rolls so it would arrive in tact no UPS they break too many heavy boxes. HD helped load onto our pickup. The bamboo installed easily with 3 people our neighbor helped too. Everyone is pleased and it looks better now too. Highly recommended.

It looked GORGEOUS at first, and even through the first couple of months, but once it got humid it has been a moldy nightmare. I sealed it with expensive sealant and the pressure treated lumber we installed at the same time looks like new, this stuff looks like a health hazard. We have been through 2 winters in Nebraska, it does not kill the mold. We have treated with mildew resistant expensive sealant, still is getting worse every day. This is a railing 10 feet off the ground so nowhere near constant ground moisture. It is even starting to fall apart in places. For a small amount that will be indoors you would be fine, do not expect this to be anything but moldy poles if you use it outside. These pics are from a few months after install. They are all completely black now 2 years later.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not impressed After I bought these I stored them in my basement for a year. It's dry basement. When I unrolled them about 1/3 of them had split and I tossed them out. Large splits, not little cracks. OK I still had enough for my project. I sealed them and they went up OK. After 1 year many were black and moldy. There might be some climate where these splitting/mold issues don't happen (like China) but I wouldn't buy them twice.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from one year on I purchased six initially, then had to purchase another two. Quite a few pieces were questionable whether they were 1" or not. A couple pieces were split. I pre-treated mine with a wood water sealer. After a year some look ok, some have turned black, some have lost their original color (the second set of two that I bought). Mine is in full mid morning to mid afternoon sun, so it shouldn't be getting moldy (black). I used a roller on a long stick to put the wood sealer on with each one laying flat on the ground. The sealer did not get around the bamboo good enough so I had to put extra on, making somewhat of a mess. It may have been better to spray it on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great It's bamboo fencing. It goes up easily and hides much of the unsightly stuff in my neighbor's yard i have been looking at for years. Time will tell how long it lasts but I am sure it will last as long as any comparably priced stockade or other cheap lumber fence. One installation tip: The fence is cut such that one end has the bamboo growth rings all aligned, while the other end of the fence the rings are somewhat random. Try to install so that the aligned ends are in the upper position, otherwise the ends will fill with water (unless you build a top for the fence). This water will likely cause splitting issues and allow mosquitoes to breed. I put up one section this way and used a small drill bit to put in drain holes.
