Answer:
Two Weeks according to the instructions. However, this kit has a self test which takes at least 48 hours and as long as 72 hours. I bought several with the intention of sending my sample in but the first self test results were negative after 48 and then 72 hours. The kit is a Petri dish and is either used as a self test or a send in lab test.

Answer:
I believe the test is accurate as to whether you have bacteria or not. It does not tell you details. That requires the lab test for an additional cost.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Company won't analyze sample for NY The in-home kit works fine. Followed the instructions and completed the test. I needed a print out of the results, so I paid the $30 fee and mailed in my sample. I received an email saying the sample was received and that the printed results would be sent by email in 2 weeks time. I waited the 2 weeks and heard nothing. I called the company 2 days after the expected date of results and was told that since the sample came from NY, they could not analyze it in order to send written results. I was annoyed because nowhere in the paperwork did it give restrictions to location. I asked them to refund the $30. What a waste of time and money June 17, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Test you own well warer Look around and you will find the whole story. We had a well problem, and I bought two different kits to insure the problem was not bacteria. The two kits from Home Depot from different manufacturers agreed and we did not apparently have a bacteria problem. November 4, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good product very convienent did exactly what it said lab work was also helpful to help alleviate issues October 7, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Value This product is easy to use. Directions are reasonably clear. Expect to see nothing for the first 24 hours after setting up the test. Then the bacteria colonies appear, hopefully only 1 to. 5. We'll worth the small cost for this home test! July 15, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good It worked like it said it would. We kept it for over a week and had some stuff grow, but the instructions said the first 48 to 72 hours were the tell tail time frame. We figured it was ok and started using the water again. I guess we are ok cause I am here to write about it, lol. I would purchase this product again if I need to. October 22, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Requires Lab Analysis to get Useful Results This kit doesn't work as stated, and the uniformed user may misinterpret the results. Contrary to the information on the front and back of the package (see Product Specifications tab), all the kit does is show that there are bacteria in the water, it doesn't tell you what the types of bacteria you have unless you pay for the lab results. Since all water contains bacteria all the kit does is lets you see the number of colonies you have. If you have more than 5 it suggests you send in the kit with a $30 lab fee. I find the information on the kit to be misleading, it suggests that the lab results are only necessary if you want to determine THE TYPE OF FECAL COLIFORM PRESENT" (my emphasis, see product specifications tab). This seems to suggest that the home test results will indicate to you whether or not you have dangerous bacteria, and that all the lab results do is to give you more detailed description of the exact type. But as stated above, all the kit does is let you see the number of bacteria colonies you have without telling you whether or not the bacteria are dangerous. This is not what we were looking for, not what the kit seemed to promise, and we are very disappointed with it. June 11, 2014
