The slats do not let light through their surface--what you would expect with a "blackout" blind--but there is way too much light coming in-between. I read other reviews saying the same, but thought that since I am not trying to sleep in this room, I wouldn't be bothered by a little light coming through. But I am still blinded by direct sun with these blinds. You cannot turn the slats in the opposite direction (down instead of up) to accommodate a high sun. The blinds do not close all the way when you do this, and the reflected light is very bright. Either way, I cannot get sufficient light stopped to work with these right next to my desk. I'm quite frustrated with this. My third attempt to get something that would work.

I should have read the other reviews - THESE DARN THINGS DON'T CLOSE PROPERLY! If you try to close them so that the tiny crack/space is between the vanes at the bottom, they don't close more than 2/3 of the way, so light just pours in. But they do close all the way so that the tiny space between vanes is at the top of each vane, which allows sunlight to come in. They work exactly opposite the way they should - ugh! I even thought about putting them in backwards, but that won't work in my room, as that end of the window is blocked by a large indoor tree with spiky branches. Maybe this is the universe's way of telling me I should sleep at night instead of day. I'm very, very disappointed.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by mcas73 Very disappointed in these blinds!
These blinds are described as "blackout" yet the room we hung them in is still extremely bright! We went so far as to order the white (which was our preference, but they didn't "blackout") AND the black as backup (also didn't "blackout" the room!) Furthermore, the string attachment to pull the blinds up/down got stuck on day 1 -- and as I was trying to fix it, it detached completely. I'm very disappointed & will be returning both the black & white blinds I purchased.

I continue to buy these even if they aren't stocked in my local store. Vertical strings give out after three or four years but replacement is quick and easy, especially with delivery to your door.

Very similar to light filtering. I will be purchasing shades.

We wanted this for our master bath. The afternoon sun is blinding even with privacy glass. The box says blackout. More like glare reducer. I would have returned it. But we had it cut to our needed size. It doesn't even close all the way. Don't waste your money and time.
