Customer Questions & Answers

Do you use this before a storm, or after a storm?

I read the reviews and I'm not sure I'm supposed to spray this on driveway and walks before or after a snow storm?
Asked by: Mike
After a storm. Otherwise, I imagine, the snow and ice would just cover it up.

Is this product safe for concrete driveways?

Model: BGB-5C which is made from calcium Chloride -- it melts snow faster for ice & snow melting CaCl2 liquid that is safe on all surfaces----- However Calcium chloride is not the better one in the areas of the BG-5P model is my preferred model of the product it is least corrosive, safer to a better degree on all surfaces and a high level better for environment and dogs feet. Remember Sodium Chloride pucks people toss on roof - are no good for roof --- corrodes nails etc.... sodium chloride is better than rock salt but not as good as magnesium chloride --- thus the only difference currently when the sell it on the tag is the word "Bolt" == Bare =Ground Bolt Deicer --- that is the Calcium Chloride -- which maybe why some in the reviews shown on Amazon feel it os not the same product as before that they liked - I suspect they mixed the two up as one -- *** * * The Magnesium Chloride the original and still sold one is the better product in my view for Composited decks that reside above EDPM rubber roofs and etc... since both materials are ok with it to a better degree than the other - Dogs feet is better as we'll ---- since no chloride -( salt) is in it .

I've used this for the first time recently at my Denver, Colorado residence. I pre-treated some walkway and driveway areas, along with a strip of concrete where the street and gutter meet to prevent ice buildup there. It seemed to work pretty well once the four to six inch snow arrived several hours later. I cleared the treated and untreated areas around 10am following an all night snow fall and did find that the treated areas accumulated less and cleared more easily. It seemed to work especially well in the curb/street gutter area and kept the area free of build up in spite of trash trucks, mailman's vehicle, etc. compacting that snow. I was able to prevent that area forming ice build up this way and later used the same approach to preventing buildup where the driveway enters the street and snow gets compacted before being able to clear it. I used nearly half the 5 gal. container using an old garden sprayer for the application. A more efficient applicator might use less. One must use care when first opening and pouring from the container as it's heavy, bulky and a little difficult to pour from. I also used saran wrap to cover the spout opening before screwing the cap back on to prevent evaporation or spillage during storage between snows. Finally, I post-treated a few icy spots further out in the street to prevent buildup there between snows. All worked adequately. I will report more after I gain more experience with this product. There were no instructions in the box about prepping or using the cap opening as a pour spout so, I cut open the perforated seal with an exacto knife and inserted a two foot length of neoprene hose with a 3/4" o.d. into the opening and it seemed to work pretty well. I also left a message with the company to call and explain how that should be done but, never heard back from them. I needed to fill my garden sprayer several times in order to complete the job. In the next snow, I will pretreat, remove snow and post treat any potentially icy areas on the entire paved area of my property. I'm guessing that will deplete this first 5 gal. test container. I think success depends on many things including temperatures, total amount and speed of accumulation, wind conditions, and many other things. Therefore, I expect results may vary with each usage. At the current price, I'm not sure I will want to keep using it each time it snows but, save it for when it will give best results, based upon experience.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No big deal. It works like it was supposed to i guess but I see no needed value. Calcium chloride worked great and even rock salt. If you prep sidewalk with either of those prior to snow you get same results and cheaper. It says it can be used on plants. Since I just got the product 2 weeks ago and it just snowed I did not try it on shrubs, trees or plants. Maybe by next season I will have a better handle on what the best uses are for me. NY

If you get it applied before Ice and snow is present it stops build up of both. It will also melt existing snow and ice. I have had this product last when applied for up to three days depending on how much moisture gets on it. This is my third year of using this product and Home Depot has the best price plus free shipping.
