Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Basemaent Watchdog 1/2 HP Submersible Sump Pump I bought the Basement Watchdog back up system for the sump system I have, which is in a confined space in a narrow sump well. After considering how to install it for some time, I decided that the best way was to replace the olr pump ( motor sits atop a pipe pedestal, with long float switch system) to a submersible pump motor. They sell the complete system at the Basement Watchdog site, but not at my HomeDepot. It would be an expensive, and daunting system to purchase that way. But in for a penny, in for a pound. The base of the main submersible pump being reviewed is plastic and a little brittle. A chunk broke off leaving a hole that debris could get into and possibly clog the works. I had to improvise a screen from wire cloth and affix it to the pump. Then I made several trips back to HD for all the little pieces parts I needed to build the pipe system. Then there was the nerve wracking gluing of the system together, and installing in place in the confined space I have. Since I installed it in January, my hose bibs are all shut off, and to test the system would require carrying buckets of water down a ladder into the space where the system is, so I won't be sure it works until spring, or if we take on water. The motors come on when the floats are moved, so I think it will work properly. I think the act of installing the system will act like a totem - scaring water away from my foundations forever. ;>) Some folks might need professional help. I've been told that many times myself. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Glad I bought it I am so glad I read the reviews on this pump because it persuaded me to purchase it and I am glad I did. Started right up and has run perfectly without issue. The only question I had was that the User's documentation said that the pump had a built in air valve to prevent airlock and does not say to drill an air lock release hole in the discharge pipe. However, the quick instructions definately point out an air lock release hole in the discharge pipe. I called the company and they said to drill the hole in the discharge pipe to give the pump every opportunity to not get air locked. Compared to other pumps of lesser quality and not as reliable, this one is well priced. June 11, 2014
