Customer Questions & Answers

What type and voltage of battery is required for backup? What mechanism is in place to keep the battery charged?

Asked by: Randy
12 V. There is a charger that the DC pump runs through.

Is this unit come with a battery or I have to buy separate ?

Asked by: Nicky
You need to purchase a separate battery. A maintenance free battery is available for the 1/3 HP unit, but the 1/2 HP unit uses regular batteries. You need to add the electrolyte to the regular batteries yourself, which is potentially hazardous (sulfuric acid), but pretty safe if you follow the directions and wear gloves and eye protection. You will need to choose which battery you want. In theory, you could run several batteries in parallel for longer run time, but you should make sure you know what you are doing before attempting that.

We have not had any power loss so I can not attest to the backup sump pump but when I manually activated the backup pump it worked very well. My only issue was that the secondary float that triggers the backup pump was broke when it arrived. I called the number on the packaging and they overnighted the part at my expense. Had I been able to wait they would have shipped the part at their expense and it would have gotten to me within 2 or 3 business days.

Occasional power outages seem to happen in our area whenever we get a heavy downpour -- just when you need a pump to run -- so I wanted to add in a DC backup pump. This package was recommended to me by the contractor that put in our foundation perimeter drain several years ago. It was pretty much a drop in replacement for the existing pump and saved me the hassle of plumbing in a second pump, sizing and purchasing additional check valves, setting up a charger and monitoring system, etc. The build quality is solid and the AC pump is actually more efficient than my old one. I went for the no-maintenance battery option. My only gripe, and it's a small one, is that the sensor control units are hardwired into the level sensors. I had to re-route the wiring through a conduit to match the original installation and hide the wires (there are four separate cables that go down to the pump; the two pumps have plugs on the ends). I had to cut the [low voltage] sensor wires and attach crimp on quick disconnects to them to enable me to route the wires. This is an easy fix if you know what you are doing, but would have been a nice feature to have already had included. It's been installed a few weeks now and has fared through a couple storms already. So far, it's working great, but we haven't had a power failure yet, which would be the ultimate test. The DC pump runs at about 1/3 the rate of the main AC pump.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hurricane Sandy Bought it about a year ago and haven't needed it. Then hurricane Sandy hit us in New Jersey. I wasn't sure how the system was going to work once the power went out. I was worried to got to sleep because I wasn't sure how it was going to work. I checked it every half hour because my basement floods real quick. After awhile I fell asleep and woke up the next morning and it worked great, not a drop of water in the basement. Once I hooked up the generator I was able to power the pump with electric. Bit it is one of the best investments I made. It really relieved a lot of stress. If you are thinking about buying one, don't hesitate go and get it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I installed it in one hour, it took me more time to go to HD to get a rubber coupling. I filled up my sump pit with water, while keeping the main pump unplugged, the secondary pump came on and pumped out all the water, our height was 12 feet, no problems. I am very happy with this product, and strongly endorse all to consider this, before wasting time and money + energy and plumbing costs with the others. Regards and happy holidays

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful customer service Our old pump died overnight in a big rainstorm, we got up in the morning to find 3 inches of water in the basement. We went out and bought this pump to quickly replace the dead one. It installed really easily and was back working right away! We only needed a hacksaw (to adjust the length of the discharge pipe) and a screwdriver (to attach the pump). We decided to get this one because of the ease of installing and the inclusion of the battery back-up (previously we were stuck in a power outage and had to bail the sump pit by hand for a day, really didn't want to worry about that again in the future). Later in the day when the cleanup crew came, they knocked a piece of their equipment into the sump pit, smashing the pit cover and destroying both float switches (both the primary and the battery back-up). I called up the manufacturer's technical support and they overnight FedEx-ed me replacement floats at no charge! Wonderful customer service!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delivered Quickly Moved into a older home and the existing sump pump was on its last leg. As the hard rains kept coming I feared either a power failier or a pump failier. So late on a Saturday night as the thunder storms pounded and the TV constantly beeped, sending emergency flood warnings while the old pump rattled and strained; I went online (1/3 hp watchdog combo is only available online) to order the pump. Luckily the old pump made it through the night, and the new one arrived that Tuesday afternoon (2 days for delivery, that's fast.) The Install was easy, it took more time to shop vac out all the debris in the bottom of the sump pit then it was to install the pump itself. I Decided to go with a maintenance free deep cycle battery instead of the recommended watchdog battery, (horrible reviews online about their battery, not their pumps). As per instructions I attached the battery acid probe to the positive terminal of the battery. So far the pump runs very well and is super quiet, especially when compared to the old concrete mixer that was there originally. If the pump doesn't last I will surely review this product again in the future. I would definitely recommend this pump at this point to anyone looking to install a new primary pump and would like the added confidence in knowing that if the power or the main pump fails, you won't be wadding in water thinking (duhh, I probably should have gotten a battery back up pump.)
