Customer Questions & Answers

Is it effective?

Asked by: Nana
Does not have features needed for bats and one well meaning answer to your question states he will hang it from a tree. This won't work. bat conservation organizations will tell you about size, features and placement to make an effective house. Thanks for caring whether bats can live in your bat house.

Home Depot could help kids have a real sense of accomplishment if they sold a bat house kit that WORKS, not some junk that will be used only by wasps and later thrown out. Bat conservation organizations have outlines for construction. Not hard to find. Home Depot could so easily make a kit large enough, with rough interior and landing strip and package the product with information on caulking and placement. This is just a waste of materials and opportunity to help the animals.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a good design for a bat house. This is not well designed to attract bsts. It should be shallower and wider, with a landing area at the bottom and a slot for ventilation. Google "bat house design" to see much better ones. If you want to build something with your child, try the birdhouse kit. Birds aren't as picky.

It only took a few minuets to put together after the stain dried.I used a walnut stain inside and out. When it was dry I nailed it to a tree at the edge of our wooded area. Hopefully the bats will find the house. I had fun - I'm a 78 y/o grandmother and might do one again if the bats come! Thanks for the easy kit, it just what I expected from Home Deposit!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bat house It was a fun project although one of our kits was missing any nails, and the houses needed additional work since bats can't live in them as is. Bats need grooves or ridges to hold on to on the inside and these had all smooth surfaces and not enough material to add grooves. The addition of 1/4" fencing solved the issue.

And the inside divider board that the bats will hang on was quite smooth so I scored it every 1/4" but all the pieces fit together well. I would recommend it to friends.

This has 6 pieces and is meant for children to build because it has all the pieces and screws ready in the un-assembled kit. I recommend this because it is a very good price range and it seems like it would be a pretty good bat house for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute Kids' Project Easy to Assemble As a kit, this has 6 pre-cut wooden pieces and 16 nail brads, making it easy to assemble. You supply the wood glue, hammer and stain or paint, and a method of mounting or hanging it 15 feet up with 7 hrs sunshine on it. I had a few concerns: The two chambers created inside are over 1" deep...possibly too wide for bats to snuggle in. It's not a very large house. Also, Home Depot pasted a permanent adhesive sticker shipping label over the instructions. The roof and rear wall are EXTREMELY thin and will warp in weather. As a result, I am adding a 5"x5" square of asphalt roofing shingle cut from a remnant. I am also caulking all seams. I cut parallel horizontal slots with a circular saw to "roughen up" the interior walls and allow the bats to climb up easily. I will also attach a square of recycled plastic eves trough netting to hang down and create a "landing pad" for them to catch when approaching. I felt these were reasonable improvements but not necessary. The instructions stress NOT to sand the inside walls smooth, but I found all pieces arrived with smooth surfaces, so this must be left over from earlier editions. All in all, a fun little kit, but I am not convinced how effective it will be to house wild bats. (attached photo shows kit being assembled in a half an hour).
