Customer Questions & Answers

Is it effective?

Asked by: Nana
I have my doubts. A nice looking kit that looks more like a bird house. Easily assembled but not sure how effective it will be.

Do you use any type of bait to get the bats to move in?
Asked by: Flintstone
From my research on line, I don't believe any bait is necessary. Bats eat flying insects. The narrow opening and warm confined space should be attractive to them, however, the house may have to be hung 15 feet up, and less than 20 yards from their current habitat. A net or grid hanging down underneath may also make entrance more inviting. Feel free to contact your local DNR (Dept of Natural Resources) office for additional information on bats and habitats. Each office usually has a handout or a web link for your free use.

Has anyone had success with this bat box?

Does anyone who owns and uses one have any bats living in their bat box?
Asked by: Arrow
This is an easy kit to assemble, with only 6 wooden pieces and all the brad nails you need. Just supply the wood glue or caulk, some paint or stain, hammer and maybe something to score or roughen the inside walls with. (All pieces arrive virtually smooth.) Can easily be assembled in a half hour by an adult, but you might want to wait to give some pieces time to dry or glue to cure. I suspect it's more decorative than functional but we'll see once it's hung 15 feet up if the bats find it next season. Stay tuned!

What are the dimensions of the box after its been built?

What are the dimensions of the box after its been built?
Asked by: thatoneguy
Aprox. 5" x 5" x 12" tall.... about the size of an old half gallon of milk or orange juice. Very similar to a bird house... in fact, with just a few pieces swapped around, it would be the bird house kit.

Customer Reviews

Bat House is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute Kids' Project Easy to Assemble As a kit, this has 6 pre-cut wooden pieces and 16 nail brads, making it easy to assemble. You supply the wood glue, hammer and stain or paint, and a method of mounting or hanging it 15 feet up with 7 hrs sunshine on it. I had a few concerns: The two chambers created inside are over 1" deep...possibly too wide for bats to snuggle in. It's not a very large house. Also, Home Depot pasted a permanent adhesive sticker shipping label over the instructions. The roof and rear wall are EXTREMELY thin and will warp in weather. As a result, I am adding a 5"x5" square of asphalt roofing shingle cut from a remnant. I am also caulking all seams. I cut parallel horizontal slots with a circular saw to "roughen up" the interior walls and allow the bats to climb up easily. I will also attach a square of recycled plastic eves trough netting to hang down and create a "landing pad" for them to catch when approaching. I felt these were reasonable improvements but not necessary. The instructions stress NOT to sand the inside walls smooth, but I found all pieces arrived with smooth surfaces, so this must be left over from earlier editions. All in all, a fun little kit, but I am not convinced how effective it will be to house wild bats. (attached photo shows kit being assembled in a half an hour).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a good design for a bat house. This is not well designed to attract bsts. It should be shallower and wider, with a landing area at the bottom and a slot for ventilation. Google "bat house design" to see much better ones. If you want to build something with your child, try the birdhouse kit. Birds aren't as picky.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blue Ribbon Winner Our fourteen year grandson was looking for an item to make for the "Wood Item" category in the Youth Division of the county fair. This looked like a good solution so we bought the kit. He put it together and stained it, (did a great job) and won a blue ribbon for his efforts. We have not put it outside to test whether it welcomes the bats but are well pleased with the purchase!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Certified Bat House! This bat house is simply too small for bats. The minimum size is 14" wide and at least a 20" tall chamber(s). Also, the chambers should be no more than 3/4" in depth. This maybe a fun project but it is simply conVERsational not conSERvational. For a REAL bat house that works, search for a Certified bat house builder. Preferably constructed from rough cut cedar.
