I noticed what appeared to be a reducer fitting in the Home Depot picture of this pump. Is that a 5/8" to 1/2" reducer fitting? Can I even reduce to 1/2"?

There is a built in flow-control with unlimited settings. This pump is perfect for outdoor fountains and small waterfalls and has a lift of 2.5 to 4.5 feet. It can be used for ponds as large as 350 gallons. Discharge setup for 5/8 inch I.D. hose and comes with an adapter for a smaller 1/2 inch ID hose. It comes with a 16 foot cord and will process 340 gph at a one foot lift."
So it looks like a 1/2" hose is good to go.

Answer:
I does not turn on automatically, you have to plug it in to a power source. Yes it is a submersible pump and has to be under water in order to pump the water through you water feature.

400 GPH Submersible Fountain Pump is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect. I bought this pump to replace a fountain pump that no longer worked. The pump has to pump water up through a three foot high hose. I tried two smaller pumps first and they did not output enough water. This pump did the job effortlessly and the fountain works better than new.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lasted for 7 years!!! Although the warranty is for one year, the previous pump lasted for 7 years, which made me buy the same exact pump for replacement. Home depot don't carry this model in stock, but ordering online was a breeze and I had it delivered to the store for pick up. The riser is made of a 1/2" PVC pipe that had to be honed at one end to fit the pump outlet, and a 1/2" PVC cap with several drilled holes to create the spray/fan effect. Flow valve was adjusted to half capacity and all works and looks great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fountain Pump After not being able to find this pump anywhere on a shelf, I was advised by the Beckett Co. to check with HomeDepot.com-it was great-they had the pump, the price was good and the service was also prompt, with no shipping charge. This is a pump we have used with success in the past but we have well water with a lot of iron content and go through pumps every 3-5 years. We are very satisfied with the total experience with this product and the Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good pump for the money Pump was easy to install and has sufficient pressure for three tier fountain.
Date published: 2014-02-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A strong pump at a good price This pump had a place for an attachable base, but no base came with it. The flow valve works well, but with all of these pumps, there should be some type of adaptor that allows you to connect a filter. Without routine maintenance, the pump will eventually seize.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from satisfactory for it's purpose This pump is not top of the line but serves it's purpose in use in our fountain. We use two of these because the fountain is a large flat panel that cascades the water. Customer service was above average and it shipped out as promised.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from utter waste of $$ Had several of these never lasted more than a few months have tried all different sizes

Rated 4 out of 5 by from flow valve does not work well, have to bend tubing to slow the flow. Good little fountain pump but difficult to regulate flow of water.
