I use this to store ash from a grill until it gets a bit full, cools, and then dump it in the woods with leaves and other brush. It is wide enough for the ash to slide in without spilling, which was important. The lid goes on so tight that it takes a few seconds to pry it off, so I only place it on lightly.
If you want to store bird food, it certainly goes on tight enough to keep animals from getting into it.

This 6gal. bucket will hold only 3gal. Very misleading!

The lid on this pricey can is neither WELDED or RIVETED, instead attached by a method that lets light - and water - in. We learned this after $25 worth of seed was ruined. I repaired the construction flaw with some JB Weld, but that should not have been necessary. Not recommended.

Nowadays I BBQ and grill on a little Weber Smokey Joe Gold. I put the charcoal out by closing all the vents, and when it's cooled a bit I set my fire starter chimney in the ash can and pour the coals and ashes into it straight from the grill, which I then clean with some citrus-based cleaner inside and out.
Then I pick up the chimney and shake it, still in or over the ash can. This way I save charcoal pieces big enough to relight, right in the chimney where I'll need them, while ashes and charcoal bits stay in the ash can until it's ready to be emptied.

bought this to build a small foundry in and it worked great. my first batch of metal was a 10lb brass melt. it preformed buitifully. i had coated the insides of the can with a 1 inch thick coat of a 50/50 plaster of paris to sand ratio. even with this coating, the outside of the bucket got REALLY hot. i measured the temp on the outside of the foundry, and it was 1000 or so degrees. then again the inside while i was melting the brass was around 2300 degrees. (i know this because my graphit crucible was a bright orange color.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by nytchr great can for ashes
Though there are many uses for this product, I bought the can for storage of wood burning stove ashes. Works great, very sturdy, and has a nice wide top that helps keep it neat when transferring ashes from the stove. Also, the can is very handy on the front porch, where I often use ashes to spread on icy paver steps. Overall, I think this product will last a long time.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Tammy the buckets leak
I bought this to hold water in so I can water my garden with sun warmed water. I got it home and it leaked. I went back and tested the other buckets in the store and they also leaked. I was stuck buying buckets that held 10 quarts instead because they didn't leak.
