Rated 5 out of 5Â by Skeptikel Maybe not the BEST, but for the price, amazing.
If I were only rating this product solely on the quality alone, without considering what it is priced for, then I would give it maybe a 3.5 to 4 out of 5. And that would just be for minor things where in an ideal product, I might have used a more sturdy material, maybe the body would be chrome-plated metal, and so on.
However, when considering the small issues such as plastic parts that I would just *prefer* to be metal, rather than need them to be.... As well as considering the price that I paid for this unit/set, then I feel OK giving it a 5 out of 5 rating. And that is rare for me, since it usually means that I can't think of how the product could be improved, but in this case, it means that I cannot think of how it could possibly be improved *without* also adding a pretty good percentage to the price!!
I too have had the flame go out here and there, but of course not since I've gotten used to how to use it, how to heat up the catalytic element before releasing the spring-loaded part, and so on. It's really not unreliable as far as the flame now that I'm just used to it.
In fact, when it comes to the catalytic element for the attachments, as well as using it as a "micro heat gun" type tool, I'm not sure if there WOULD be any way to put it out, other than dipping it in water or using a fire-extinguisher, perhaps an air-compressor's blower tool....
As far as soldering, which is the only thing I have actually tried to *use* so far, it's amazing. I have a few other soldering tools, including: a bulky soldering "gun" that is I think at least 200 watts, maybe 300 or more; a pen-type electric soldering iron of around 15-20 watts as I recall, and the Weller Deluxe Battery-Operated Soldering Iron, which I must say, is useless unless you are only wanting to solder VERY FINE wires (24 gauge would be too thick even - I mean VERY FINE)... I have been ale to get the battery operated one to WORK for my purposes, but it's a real headache, and often times my solder is more-so globbed on the surface of the wires, rather than penetrated. Time doesn't help, because the wire wicks away the heat at the same rate that I'm able to SLOWLY apply it, doing nothing more than melting my insulation!!
BUT... With this item I'm reviewing, I can light it, and the tip is ready to use for even medium size jobs in a matter of SECONDS... If I were in some kind of "soldering race," the ONLY unit of mine that I would possibly think of using instead, would be my big, heavy, high-wattage gun-style iron that is made for large, almost commercial type electrical jobs.
And while it's so fast in heating, unlike my big gun-type iron which is clumsy/bulky/heavy, with large tips that really make it a nightmare to do finer, more intricate jobs, THIS item here has BOTH the high/fast heat, as well as being JUST as well suited for small, intricate jobs such as electronics!! It's really barely any more difficult to hold and get into small spaces than my electronic soldering iron is.
And since the exhaust gas vents out at a 90 degree angle to what I'm heating, there is little risk of me burning the surrounding components of what I'm working on, just so long as I'm wary of which way I hold it, to vent the gas away from my project.
A 4/5 if price were not a factor, but 5/5 after considering how affordable it is!!!
The only thing that might lower this rating, would be if in the future something breaks due to "affordable" construction. ;-) But even so, it doesn't feel cheap. It feels sturdy enough, yes.

Rated 4 out of 5Â by mike2big tiny torch how about that?
A bit hard to light but once it's going seems to work well,. I tried it as a big solder iron to solder 12g wire to an outlet type plug so a regular solder iron wouldn't do. THis worked with lead but couldn't silver solder

Rated 4 out of 5Â by Jimbo Great for model railroading
Does a fast and easy soldering job on train track and related wiring. Easy and small enough to get in tight places without melting everything in the surrounding area.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by 12vSparky Perfect for the job site
Used this for low voltage connections. Soldered 100's of pairs of speaker wire and camera voltage cable! The fact that it's portable and heats up fast saved me time and made me money! Great product for board level work as well! A+++

Rated 5 out of 5Â by geewiz1 Great Product with fast heat up
I had a standard electric Solder Iron 30W but needed something hotter to handle 12 ga wire and large copper connectors. This device heats up in no time and has several end units to handle small through to large heat transfer bits.
No power cord to get in the way and the gas lasts several minutes - It has never run out on me.
Its one of my best tools, love it.
I use it in airplane model building
