I should think so. I am currently using a 14.1 oz. Turbotorch* MAPP/PRO as that is what is available locally. On the truck (we install submersible pumps) I like the 16.4 oz. propane cylinder as they don't tip over quite as easily. I like the adjustable flame for soldering electrical wiring and for using heat shrink sleeves outdoors.
Indoors, I use the TS8000 for heat treating various tool steels (for shop use). This torch works well on the smaller parts, but we do carry an oxy/acetylene torch on the truck and in the shop for larger projects.
I'm not sure what you mean by "extension cord" however. I suppose one could get the fittings and use a refillable propane tank, which would be much cheaper than purchasing the small hand held tanks if you used your torch a lot. I had one rigged up like that many years ago, but don't anymore as we simply don't burn enough propane through this torch to warrant the trouble finding fittings, hoses, and etc..
Hope this helps?

Yes, it is designed to burn either fuel without having to change tips. Simply screw on either cylinder, check for leaks, and fire it up!

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great upscale handheld torch. I have used this style torch in my contracting business for about 20 years. Compact, very hot, trigger lighting are the best features. Rugged, although not indestructible. I heartily recommend for anything more than infrequent home use. Purchased for the first time the flex hose to augment the torch for tight locations. Not necessary, but a nice accessory. September 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent product without MAPP Wanted the 8000 head but the product in the stores has a bottle of MAPP included although this head works with propane (see their site). Use for cooking so not sure about its use in plumbing... It does an outstanding job putting the finishing touches on steaks, chops and taking the skin off bell peppers. USE it outside! June 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A very good torch I really like this torch as it will burn either propane or MAPP gas. It has an adjustable flame, which is nice when soldering. I also like these torches as they can be used in any position without flooding the torch. I've noticed that (when heat treating tool steels) that the MAPP heats up quite a bit quicker and hotter than the propane. I haven't tried to solder with the MAPP yet, but I should think it would handle 1" copper pretty well, maybe even 1-1/4? March 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is the one to juy This is the torch to by. Easy to use and it stores well. Dont waist you time with the others March 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hot! I went from the cheapest propane model to this one, and was stunned at the difference. Heats the copper joint vastly quicker and usually results in a much better looking connection. The only drawback is that it's kind of a menace in really tight spaces (the lowest setting is still pretty intense), and it quickly shreds the black fabric shielding stuff. For a single repair, the cheap propane one is adequate. Otherwise this is well worth the money unless you are seriously broke. The igniter works great, and the fact that you can set it to stay on or turn off when you release the trigger is handy. August 17, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best torch Had one for years until my sons used it and dropped it. Just had to replace it September 29, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice hot torch! This is a very nice well-made propane lights-every-time torch. I'd buy it again and again. The only reason and issue I have with it was the plastic breakable(and did!) control knob that replaced the all brass knob on the old model.I replaced it with my old knob needle valve shut-off from my old torch that had a failed igniter. Still, all in all,buy it,you won't be disappointed. October 6, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love it ! this self igniting, air volume adjusting torch is wonderful October 6, 2015
