CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 5 out of 5 by 1 reviewer.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Shed for a Great Price I had every intention of purchasing a shed from a local big-name shed builder this past spring. When I went there to order it I was told that there was a lead time of approx. 4-5 months. I figured in that time I could build one myself for less money. As it turns out, I found Best Barns and realized I could buy an even larger shed for nearly half the price! I purchased this shed online in early July. About 10 days later I received notice in the mail of the scheduled delivery dates and contact info. The first shipment of the floor comes from Home Depot and the shed comes in a separate shipment directly from the manufacturer. The floor is just a bundle of 2x4's, plywood, and the runners. They came with a small forklift and delivered it where I wanted. The shed comes in two large cardboard boxes affixed to pallets and a bundle of longer 2x4's. A local delivery company is used for this delivery, which I would not rate all that highly: they cancelled one appointment and only had a hand-truck to move the pallets off the truck, so they could not deliver it to the exact spot I wanted it. I cannot fault HD or the manufacturer for this, it was clearly the local shipper's poor performance. Nearly all of the wood arrives pre-cut! The floor had the most amount of cutting and even that was fairly minimal. Assembly of the floor was straight forward. I poured tubular concrete footings, ensuring they were level was a bigger challenge since the ground was not level. I should note I built this almost entirely myself and I do not have a nail gun and it comes with all the nails - so every nail was hammered by hand. Prepping the site and pouring footings probably took 2 days. Assembling the floor perhaps a little less than a day. Assembly of the shed itself was almost 3 weekends, there was a rain day in there as well. I did have assistance putting up the trusses and gables. Although one person could probably wrestle with putting the trusses in place, installing the gables (front & rear second story walls) absolutely requires two people. These go up pre-assembled - they are very heavy and need to be held in place while being attached. For the same reason, it would also be easier to have two people to fit the walls together. There was one piece of siding that was slightly shorter than it was supposed to be, but it was still covered by a trim board. The directions could be a little more descriptive and consistent throughout. Sometimes I had to look back on prior steps to determine which size nails I would be using on a particular step. (Which brings up an important point: There are VERY FEW extra nails, if at all for some steps. I ran about a half-dozen short on floor nails, and used up nearly every other type of nail except for the rafter nails.) But the directions also come with a hotline to contact the company for help - even on weekends! I did not need to use this, but it was nice to know it was there. The kit does not come with shingles or other roofing materials. I used 3-tab shingles and installed a ridge vent. Again, one person nailing by hand all-in was about a day. The two things that did not come with the shed and were not available as an option that I recommend are a ramp & reinforcement for the loft floor. I built a ramp with specs found online in a couple of hours. The loft floor is just OCB laid on top of the trusses which are 24" oc. If you put anything heavy up there or go crawling around I do not think it would hold. I cut 2x4"s and installed every 2' using joist hangers for extra support. The kit has nearly enough extra 2x4's nailed to the pallet which allow you to do this. I had to buy two more, plus the joist hangers. Took a couple more hours, but was well worth it. I had been looking at the model with the door in the middle of the side-wall. I am glad I opted for the door on the end wall. I think you lose a lot of potential space with the door in the side-wall. I am able to store the following things on the ground floor with plenty of room to move around and get things out: lawn hand tools (on racks), 2 bikes (on hooks), work bench, table saw, chop saw, shelf unit, generator, wheelbarrow, lawnmower (push not tractor),compressor. If I had a tractor mower instead of the push mower I may have to drive it in and out to get to some of my stuff, but would still be able to walk around. A few folks that have seen the shed have been impressed and never thought this would be what you get from ordering online, sight-unseen. I would not hesitate to purchase another one of these, though I think I now have all I need with this one! September 21, 2014
