How many layers are in this ply and how thick is each layer? And is this Baltic birch?

Asked by: Person
There are 7 layers. 2 veneer and 5 other. The interior layers are 9/64 thick each. Can't tell what kind of birch product it is and they don't state in any of the overview or spec.

What grit size would I need to make it smoother? I know it is already smooth and a grit too course would make it worse.
Asked by: Ronix137
I would think a 220 grit or higher would do just fine.

I want to make new painted cabinet doors that look like existing doors. No rails or panels, just solid doors. Would this product be good for that? Does the edge need anything done to it before painting?
Asked by: blbb
I'd put some sealer on it so it doesn't suck up the paint.

Customer Reviews

Birch Plywood (Common: 3/4 in. x 2 ft. x 4 ft.; Actual: 0.728 in. x 23.75 in. x 47.75 in.) is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent product if you know what you're getting I like these "handy panels" because the small size makes them MUCH easier to move and handle than full 4 x 8 sheets. Yes, our local HD will cut big sheets in half for free on their panel saw, but I prefer to not bother with that because it such a hassle to inspect large sheets, select one then have an associate cut it down to manageable sizes. These "grab-n-go" sizes save me time. Quality; generally, these seem to be "shop-grade" sheets that have been cut down to remove defects. Occasionally some edge-checking or voids get through, so inspect before you buy if that is important for your projects. I need superior quality for building speaker cabinets where tight-tolerances and structural integrity are essential. So long as I spend he time to look for the better sheets, that has not been a problem. Often times, sheets are stored haphazardly, which leads to warping. If the warping is not severe, I can correct that by storing the sheets on a perfectly flat glass table and applying gentle heat with a heating pad; like an electric blanket. I use the low setting to prevent excess heat build-up, since I do not want to start a fire. Depending on the severity of the warpage, it may take a few hours to several days to flatten the sheets. Once they are flat, I let them cool and they tend to stay flat afterwards. Edges are generally straight, but I have never seen a perfectly four-square board, so some re-sawing to dimension will be necessary for almost every project. So long as you know what to expect and how to deal with minor defects, HD's Baltic Birch is a decent product. Being able to buy small quantities and select the best sheets makes up for the slightly higher net price of these smaller boards. If they always stored this material so it stayed flat and sold it at the large-quantity price I would give it a five star rating.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Impressed I went to Home Depot planning to buy a full sheet of the birch plywood, but in comparing the quality of the handy panel it appeared to be the better product based on having 6 layers of veneer rather than only 2 with a solid core on the full sheet. I ended up having to spend more than the cost of the 4x8 sheet, but thought it would be worth it for the drawers I am building. Upon cutting this plywood, it was very convenient to work with; no need to cut down before going straight to the table saw. However, there were many more voids in the laminate than it appeared at first. This became a bigger issue when cutting the dovetails. In summary, the size of the handy panel is nice. My complaint is only with the quality of the plywood.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from bar code placement I purchased a small sheet of birch to make a leaf extension for a table. The bar code label was in the exact center of the better side which left the label glue when removed. Quit a bit of sanding was necessary to clear this area for staining. Would it be too much to have the bar code placed on the end or at least very edge of the wood product. Obviously someone who never has worked with wood was in charge of the bar code label placement.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 2'x4' Plywood Panels To GeoWright on his review. I buy nothing, But 2'x4' plywood panels, 3/4",1/2", 3/8" of different types and quality from HD, it just makes me mad that the stores don't store the sheets flat. Most of the sheets get warped standing on edge in the racks. I have complained many times to the store management, But it doesn't do any good. Might as well talk to the wall. If I had a better supplier, believe me I'd go there!! The fact is that HD doesn't care if the plywood is warped, their attitude is if you don't like it, go somewhere else. Loew's has there's on edge in racks too. So I can buy warped plywood from HD or go to Loew's and buy their warped plywood. Most everything else I buy from HD is great!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mind the gap I needed a smooth 3/4" 2' x 4' plywood panel, for building a top for a changing table. I probably should have checked it more closely at the store, but during assembly I noticed a gap in the core below the veneer, it goes through the entire piece. See the attached photo, I will use it, as it is no longer returnable. But I am disappointed that Home Depot would accept defective building materials from their suppliers.

My piece arrived with a bar code sticker in the middle of it. The glue from the sticker left a perfect outline of the sticker. The store manager gave me a can of acetone to remove the glue. It appears to have driven the glue deeper into the wood. The outline of the sticker is still very obvious. Make sure the good side of the piece is not affected by labels, dents or chips. Good luck....

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not a smooth cut by the lumber dept I like that Home Depot cuts small sizes of plywood so I don't have to purchase a 4x8 sheet for a small project. I have purchased many of these over the years. This time whoever ripped the 4' side ruined about a 1/2" of the edge by splintering it. I still could use the piece by ripping it again and making a smoother edge, but I expect more from HD than this. Please be more considerate of the customer next time you rip these pieces down.
