Questions & Answers

Where is better to keep dahlia pot: on sun or in a shade?

My dahlias do not seem to like sun, they put their leaves down so I moved them to a shade, I thought they like sun.
Asked by: Lara
Sun or shade is relative. Unless a plant is prairie or Mediterranean, sun means some sun. 12 hours of Texas, Florida "sun" is too much. If in doubt, plant "sun" plants where it's part day in the shade. Mid-day sun is the toughest: prairie or Mediterranean plants would put up with excessive sun. Liatris, sedum, etc. My potted dahlia was okay on my deck getting 3 or 4 hours sun, so long as I kept it watered. It was shaded by the house from about 1pm onward.

How to store it during winter, should it be kept in a container if it is grown there or it should be dig out and store in fridge with 40F ?

Asked by: Lara
Dahlias are winter hardy in zones 8-10. In all other zones, dig up the tubers carefully after the first fall frost has killed the foliage. Let the tubers dry thoroughly and pack them in sawdust, dry sand, or peat moss. Store the tubers in a cool (40⁰ - 45⁰), dry place.
