How is the reinforcement of the tub construction

Asked by: Gil
It's sturdy 16-gauge steel. It's even sturdier than it's big brother, the Maui. But there are two things you need to know to get a rock-solid installation. First, it has to go over a reasonably level subfloor that's in good shape. My latest adventure with this tub was putting it where I'd taken out a cast-iron tub installed in 1945 at the same time they put in a thick-bed tile floor. The installers had to lower the subfloor by hacking the joists down, and the old cast-iron tub simply sat on top of the open joists. I had to put in the missing subfloor over those joists with 1 1/2 inches of plywood to bring it level to the existing tile floor. Second and most importantly, the Maui and Aloha Bootz tubs, unlike many other tubs, are designed to take a 2x4 five foot stringer (often called a ledger) across the back, not the more common 1x4 stringer. The stringer has to extend all five feet. For the Aloha, it has to go in at a height of 14 inches. Make sure that stringer is straight, and then make sure it's dead level all the way across. Bootz recommends nailing it into the studs. I use the big #9 3-inch deck screws, two to a stud, and I predrill the holes. The first time I did the stringer was with the Maui, and I used a lousy twisty 2x4 with a cheap level that threw me off the height measurement, and the tub is a bit bouncy to this day. You get the subfloor in, you get a straight 2x4 in at the right height, and the Aloha will take 400 pounds easily. All tubs in the USA have to pass a weight test with 300 pounds in them, so that the minimum standard they're all built to, but this one will (unofficially) take much more weight than the minimum.

I ordered this tub for a brand new total gut rehab bathroom remodel after we decided not to go with a stand up tiled shower. I didn't see any negative reviews before purchasing which I actually can't believe. I just have received a faulty tub. The tub is cheap, my 2 workers who are meticulous at their jobs, somehow knicked the side of it after it was installed and the enamel chipped down to the steel. Also, the tub squeaks even after several attempts to brace it, etc. Finally, the squeak is still there and to make things even worse, the tub sounds so hollow and tinny when you step into it like you are stepping onto a doctor's exam table-Cold and unappealing. We made a decision to keep the tub and not ship it back to the manufacturer after the chip incident because my guys assured me they could fix the chip, but after several coats of filler, you can still see the chip. We should have ripped it out and sent it back. Overall very disgusted with this tub.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Front skirt not straight I installed this tub for a customer. There were 3issues. 1. The front skirthas a brace welded to the nailing flange. The stud wall has to be notched to accommodate the brace not being flush with the flange. 2. The front skirt has a brace in the center and the skirt protrudes in the center. Tile will exacerbate the curvature of the skirt. 3. The instructions are printed on the outside of the carton and don't include any dimensions for framing. They basically say measure the tub and frame the way you think it should be. Useless but seems to be the trend today.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent quality great price This is a decent tub for under 200.00. You get the piece of mind of having a solid steel tub without the weight and cost for a cast iron tub. The only complaint I have is knicks and chips... depending on where the chip is it could be a big problem. If it is on one of the corners, rather then exchanging it, just purchase a porcelain paint repair kit (small version). If you exchange it you run the risk of running into the same issue. The alternative is spending another 300.00 for the real deal

Once the white subway tile was installed around it, the white color wasn't so white after all. The color is more of a bisque (off-white) color that has yellow undertones. It's installed now and I won't take it out because that would be a huge and costly ordeal. I have a friend who, after telling her my situation, told me that she has ordered this same item several times for projects that she is overseeing and that her "white" tubs also were not white. It would probably be fine if you are not putting it next to anything white. The tub itself seems to be a good item for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tub! This tub replaced an old fiberglass tub in my mobile home. While not quite as big as my previous tub, it serves the purpose very well. I will be purchasing another to replace the fiberglass tub in my other bathroom. We did not experience bent parts like other reviewers. Installation was super easy. Great buy for the money spent!

I decided to use the taller shower doors, from Home Depot, on it to make the new tub-to-ceiling tile look even better. The brushed nickel faucet and plumbing parts looks really good against the white tub. I had to deal with a small room, but I love the way it turned out.
