Color variation inside tub

This question is from Maui 5 ft. Left Drain Soaking Tub in White

I am remodeling my bathroom and recently had this tub installed. I've noticed a variation in color where the bottom part of the tub seems to be a slightly different color from the sides of the tub so that it looks like there is a dirt ring around the tub. Is this typical or is this a defect? Is the slip-resistance surface at the bottom of the tub a different color from the sides of the tub? I have thoroughly cleaned the tub with a non-abrasive cleaner so it doesn't seem to be actual dirt. Has anyone else seen this color variation in their tub? Is there anything I can do about it?

Do you remove the styrofoam base when installing or keep it under the tub?

The tub comes with a styrofoam block attached underneath it. Should I install the tub with this block, or remove it and have the tub only resting on the 2x4 wall brace and the front apron? Thank you!

Hi, Ed. You need to install the tub with the styrofoam block where it is. The Bootz website directs you to install your ledger board (the 2 x 4 long wall brace) at 16 5/8 +/- 1/4 inch. You will need to slide the tub in place and check for level before you set up, and the styrofoam block will flatten a bit with time and repeated use, so I usually end up putting in the ledger board at 16 1/4. You will need to slide the tub in place and check for level before you set up, and the styrofoam block will flatten a bit with time and repeated use, so I usually end up putting in the ledger board at 16 1/4. I make absolutely sure that board is both straight and dead level. I know another contractor I respect who swears by setting the thing in a bed of just-sprayed Great Stuff foam to both glue it in place and somewhat counteract the flattening styrofoam, but that's not how I do it. I think the random pattern of the sprayed foam makes it harder to make sure that this thing is dead level side to side and front to back when it is installed, especially if the tub is wrapped with unfaced fiberglass insulation to quiet it down, which I always do. Good luck! Read Less

Answer:
It's possible. It's also possible a cat or other pet is peeing in it. However, if the drain was set properly with plumber's putty or (sometimes) silicone caulk, this shouldn't happen.

Maui 5 ft. Left Drain Soaking Tub in White is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 121.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from It took me FOUR tries and the tub is still dented!! I ordered a tub on a Saturday, my contractor picked it up Monday. He opened the box on Monday afternoon to install it and there was a chunk of paint missing in the tub. I called and said this looks like someone returned it and I got it. Tuesday, the contractor brought the missing paint tub back and picked up another. Paint looked good at first glance - as they are carrying the tub in, they did a double take as the entire side was warped. Clearly damaged in production and a bad patch job applied. Can't put a warped tub against straight tile, so I called the store again. I brought it back in my truck. Even though they "eyeballed" four in stock, there was actually none when I got there so they told me they would give me the next level of tub at the same cost. I asked if it was the same size and specifications and they said yes. So I bring it back and nope, it's too shallow and i would have to spend money to rearrange my pipes. At this point, I am on tve verge of tears because its holding up my bathroom. I drove to another home depot where they apologize and give me a discount for my troubles. I look it over in the terrible home depot lighting and all the paint is there and it looks straight. I get it home and the contractor opens it completely in front of me. There in front of my house, I scream that I am done and don't care anymore. Put the stupid thing in. There were two small dents on the left side. Basically, if you buy this tub expect it to be a dented messed up piece of garbage. Ive come to the conclusion that the company does not do enough to protect the outside of the tub. One side of the box clearly needs more padding than they give it. It is a shame that so many have defects simply because they dont have enough styrofoam in the box. I seriously hope i never have to buy another tub ever. If i do, i will avoid this company at all costs. Not worth the traumatizing experience.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Horrible junk Where do I begin? We are on our fourth bootz Maui tub. It is just a horrible manufactured product. Nothing is square or even. Had to make dozens of adjustments till I just said no. First inspect the tub before purchasing for nicks, dings, and dents. The first tub had chipped paint and bent left bottom corner. Upon returning it, I had them pull four to inspect and three of the four had issues like the aforementioned. One had a area on the top back left corner where they applied to much porcelain coating and had raised paint. The others were out of shape from one end to the other bowed out. When we got the replacement one home and installed the drain that had a gasket it cracked hair line cracks. Only positive is it was cheap. But I'm chalking the bootz and going with a slightly more expensive one..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the deep inset of this tub and the looks. No flaws. There were NO flaws on this tub. It was NOT bent or chipped. We purchased the tub for a diy and we brought it straight home very carefully. This tub was the deepest I could find for a soaker. It had an easy transitional design with a good incline for the back rest. The floor of the tub has a slide proof texture added and after the first bath it was not bothersome at all. We actually like it. Now, for some tips and one complaint. Con: The porcelain overlay (steel) is easy to scratch and chip. Tips: Do not put a chair or a ladder inside this tub when you are tiling! You will damage the tub. 1. Place a blanket inside of the tub when tiling to keep your tile from dropping directly onto the porcelain. 2. Place a blanket into the tub with it being folded several times before placing a rubber footed step ladder or chair inside the tub and do not push it around. Pick it up and move it gently from end to end to avoid scratches and chips. 3. Place a small hand towel around the drain when installing to avoid scratching and chipping the porcelain. (we have a small pin size chip from drain install that will rust if not sealed) You can purchase a repair kit for $4 @ home depot. 4. I recommend placing insulation (wall) all around the tub on the inside. This helps your bath water stay hot longer and it will not have a hallow sound when your filling it. It will sound quiet and sturdy. I hope this review helps with your next install. I am pleased with this tub. Once it was installed and the tub still looks beautiful I think it was all worth it. I am very pleased.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great deal if you can find one not damaged. Both tubs we have purchased were damaged. Went to exchange one of them (one of them we kept even though it had a bent corner) the had 2 of them left in stock at the store and both were damaged also- Porcelain was scratched off in a few places on each one. Had to go to another HD location to find one and luckily it wasn't damaged. Open the box to check it before you take it home, otherwise you'll probably end up having to exchange it. Installation on it is super easy!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Carefully inspect the tub before installing The first tub we took home have very thin enamel on each corner, but the interior looked good. My wife and I got it set in place, leveled, and then removed to install the drain. That's when I noticed a bubble in the enamel on the sidewall of the tub. A scratch with my thumbnail and the enamel peeled away. It was returned, and the second tub seems to have thicker enamel all around, and not bubbles. It installed okay, but lost half a day returning the first tub.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Check before you buy The tub is pretty standard. It is more spacious than the aloha. Ask someone to open the box before you buy. I didn't and the tub was cracked and I had to return. When I went back and checked 2 were damaged before I found a good one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY THIS TUB!!!!! This tub cost me at LEAST 2 days. After installing the first one, one of my guys noticed a few chips on the edge. I had the rear hardy board on and the drain installed, so the next day, I unscrewed hardy board etc and brought it back. Before I bought the next one, I unboxed it and it looked OK, so i bought it and got it back to the job. I was ready to install when we noticed the whole rear was warped and out of level so back that one went. After returning that one, we checked several more and they were all either warped chipped or had noticeably thin porcelain. The job is now at a stand still until I source another tub. I would never have guessed that Home Depot would sell such inferior and obviously problematic products. To add insult to injury, the people who worked at Home Depot Treated me like a criminal for expecting a quality product. Do not buy this ever.!!

The tub itself in the store was what I needed but when the special order arrived a week later we took it out of the box it had a scratch in the front of the tub half an inch long 1/8th wide. I had to return it and since my handyman/plumber was not available during the Holidays we had to reinstall the old tub which I will now have re-sprayed. I had to pay labor to take the old tub out and then reinstall the original tub due to Bootz shipping a product right out of the box with a scratch!!! I will not recommend this manufacturer to anyone nor will I buy their products again.
