Color variation inside tub

This question is from Maui 5 ft. Left Drain Soaking Tub in White

I am remodeling my bathroom and recently had this tub installed. I've noticed a variation in color where the bottom part of the tub seems to be a slightly different color from the sides of the tub so that it looks like there is a dirt ring around the tub. Is this typical or is this a defect? Is the slip-resistance surface at the bottom of the tub a different color from the sides of the tub? I have thoroughly cleaned the tub with a non-abrasive cleaner so it doesn't seem to be actual dirt. Has anyone else seen this color variation in their tub? Is there anything I can do about it?

Do you remove the styrofoam base when installing or keep it under the tub?

The tub comes with a styrofoam block attached underneath it. Should I install the tub with this block, or remove it and have the tub only resting on the 2x4 wall brace and the front apron? Thank you!

Hi, Ed. You need to install the tub with the styrofoam block where it is. The Bootz website directs you to install your ledger board (the 2 x 4 long wall brace) at 16 5/8 +/- 1/4 inch. You will need to slide the tub in place and check for level before you set up, and the styrofoam block will flatten a bit with time and repeated use, so I usually end up putting in the ledger board at 16 1/4. I make absolutely sure that board is both straight and dead level. I know another contractor I respect who swears by setting the thing in a bed of just-sprayed Great Stuff foam to both glue it in place and somewhat counteract the flattening styrofoam, but that's not how I do it. I think the random pattern of the sprayed foam makes it harder to make sure that this thing is dead level side to side and front to back when it is installed, especially if the tub is wrapped with unfaced fiberglass insulation to quiet it down, which I always do. Good luck! Read Less

Do you have to use two stringers? Can't I just use 1 on the long side?

Answer:
It's possible. It's also possible a cat or other pet is peeing in it. However, if the drain was set properly with plumber's putty or (sometimes) silicone caulk, this shouldn't happen.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 102 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do NOT buy this tub! I typically read reviews prior to purchasing, but fell in love with this tub on the spot and made an impulse buy. Once home I read review after review after review about the tub chipping off porcelain and thought that maybe ours wouldn't be damaged. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. We had chipped porcelain inside the tub basin so soon enough those spots would rust. Then reading that people had to open 2 or 3 before they found one that was in good shape just made me decide to get a different tub all together. I'm not sure if these tubs brand new come with a protective film, but ours did not and the box was slightly damaged too. My thoughts now are someone else previously opened it, saw the damage, and returned it. Hopefully the one we just returned doesn't end up back on the shelf too! Do yourself a favor and go with a better quality tub! April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Contractor review - pictures included My wife and I run a small property investment, rental, and renovation company in the Western Pennsylvania area. I am the licensed contractor of the outfit and head up our small renovation crew. I wouldn't say that we specialize in high-end installations, but we do our best to offer a lot of value for money in our renovations. The pictures included in this review are of a bathroom renovation in our area using a Maui tub purchased at my local Home Depot. I did not pick out the tub myself: the people at HD did. There were no problems with it -- it was still in the box. I've personally handled the bulk of this renovation. I feel I'm at least minimally qualified to handle the work of putting one of these in and I can confidently pass judgment on this tub. It's a great steel tub. You can get exceptional results with this tub. It's about as difficult to install as other steel tubs are. You will rarely make an investment better than this one in home improvement. I will most definitely by buying and installing this tub again. April 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love our tub The first tub we purchased was damaged, so we exchanged it and checked before we left for chips. We love this tub and can't wait to use it. March 1, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love the deep inset of this tub and the looks. No flaws. There were NO flaws on this tub. It was NOT bent or chipped. We purchased the tub for a diy and we brought it straight home very carefully. This tub was the deepest I could find for a soaker. It had an easy transitional design with a good incline for the back rest. The floor of the tub has a slide proof texture added and after the first bath it was not bothersome at all. We actually like it. Now, for some tips and one complaint. Con: The porcelain overlay (steel) is easy to scratch and chip. Tips: Do not put a chair or a ladder inside this tub when you are tiling! You will damage the tub. 1. Place a blanket inside of the tub when tiling to keep your tile from dropping directly onto the porcelain. 2. Place a blanket into the tub with it being folded several times before placing a rubber footed step ladder or chair inside the tub and do not push it around. Pick it up and move it gently from end to end to avoid scratches and chips. 3. Place a small hand towel around the drain when installing to avoid scratching and chipping the porcelain. (we have a small pin size chip from drain install that will rust if not sealed) You can purchase a repair kit for $4 @ home depot. 4. I recommend placing insulation (wall) all around the tub on the inside. This helps your bath water stay hot longer and it will not have a hallow sound when your filling it. It will sound quiet and sturdy. I hope this review helps with your next install. I am pleased with this tub. Once it was installed and the tub still looks beautiful I think it was all worth it. I am very pleased. February 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Got a great deal, but... We thought we had purchased a nice tub at a nice price. It is comfortable with the back rest built in. Heeded all the precautions during installation as far as keeping the surfaces covered and protected during the whole project. Used the cardboard packaging as directed plus a very thick comforter over that. When thru with installation and the protective layers were removed, we discovered three pock marks on the porcelain finish inside the tub. Evidently, the finish is not as durable as advertised, other wise these pock marks would never had happened. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good tub for the price Just finished up tiling and I think the tub looks great. It was pretty light weight which was good since I was installing it by myself. Had to cut some chunks out of a couple studs to fit it in but that was expected since the tub fits wall-to-wall. Definitely looks better than the fiberglass tub that came with the house. May 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love I love it! It's easy to install and easy to keep clean! May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love it! I read all the reviews here before my purchase and I inspected the tub before I took it home. No scratches, chips or warping in my tub. I paid for tub installation and it has been perfect for 2 months now. It sure seems like a great tub for the price. It's deeper than the other we had and I'm most satisfied! April 16, 2016
