Color variation inside tub

This question is from Maui 5 ft. Left Drain Soaking Tub in White

I am remodeling my bathroom and recently had this tub installed. I've noticed a variation in color where the bottom part of the tub seems to be a slightly different color from the sides of the tub so that it looks like there is a dirt ring around the tub. Is this typical or is this a defect? Is the slip-resistance surface at the bottom of the tub a different color from the sides of the tub? I have thoroughly cleaned the tub with a non-abrasive cleaner so it doesn't seem to be actual dirt. Has anyone else seen this color variation in their tub? Is there anything I can do about it?

I have contacted Bootz directly twice by email and received no response. I purchased a brand new Bootz Maui tub in white and it had two chips in it right out of the box. I would like a repair kit.

The tub comes with a styrofoam block attached underneath it. Should I install the tub with this block, or remove it and have the tub only resting on the 2x4 wall brace and the front apron? Thank you!

Hi, Ed. You need to install the tub with the styrofoam block where it is. The Bootz website directs you to install your ledger board (the 2 x 4 long wall brace) at 16 5/8 +/- 1/4 inch. You will need to slide the tub in place and check for level before you set up, and the styrofoam block will flatten a bit with time and repeated use, so I usually end up putting in the ledger board at 16 1/4. I make absolutely sure that board is both straight and dead level. I know another contractor I respect who swears by setting the thing in a bed of just-sprayed Great Stuff foam to both glue it in place and somewhat counteract the flattening styrofoam, but that's not how I do it. I think the random pattern of the sprayed foam makes it harder to make sure that this thing is dead level side to side and front to back when it is installed, especially if the tub is wrapped with unfaced fiberglass insulation to quiet it down, which I always do. Good luck! Read Less

Answer:
Not really. It feels like 600-grit sandpaper, not pebbles.

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 98 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not believe the spec sheets. I purchased this tub specifically because of the specs of the drain position. Spec sheet says the drain center should be 8 1/2" from the wall, however, the actual penetration for the drain int he tub is closer to 9 1/2" ... FAIL June 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great bathtub! Very high quality bathtub at an excellent price. Installation was quick and easy. June 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this Tub The Tub is Great. Easy to put in. This is only the second tub I have ever installed and this went A LOT of easier than the first one I installed in our last Bathroom Renovation. Looks really good. May 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Broke at intallation At installation, something was dropped and an inch hole was made. It is supposed to be the same as steel. Steel does not break. April 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by probably should not be offered for sale my customers picked it out and i picked it up. i had to go through all five units in stock to find the one least damaged to buy. everone of the tubs had flawes in the porcelain . i settled on one that was bent and the broken porcelain was the easiest to hide with installation. i spent an hour digging through the inventory to find least flawed. as per design , low cost is cost put off on the customer. i will not give my customers the option of a low cost steel bath tub made in US or not. i would go with fiberglass instead or spend more on a cast iron tub with thicker porcelain and less bendable. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Muai Tub is a great deal...just be careful to protect it. You cannot beat this for the price. Two warnings: 1. Open the box and make sure the tub is not chipped and that the drain is oriented in your correct direction. 2. The tub will chip if you are not careful. Take all precautions during install and tiling. This is my second of these tubs. The first has worked perfectly. The second is waiting to be installed in another bathroom. I did this project without any professional help. The install, the tiling, the plumbing, etc... You can too, just be careful with the tub. January 23, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by they would sell more If they were available to the customer The bath tub meets my expectation. Had to order it on line because the store never put them on the shelf. March 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not purchase This bath tub came with several scrapes and divits in the enamel of the tub, above the drain. I saw the reviews were bad, but was hoping we'd get lucky. CHECK YOUR TUB with a fine tooth comb before you purchase it. February 22, 2016
